WARE COL

If that gets mentioned, then KERN, Bakersfield (Kern County) should probably be mentioned, too. KERN is cool. WWVA is, too. |
Would WRAL FM/TV (Raleigh NC) count?
WNYC-FM New York? There was an urban-formatted WRAP in Virginia some years back. Makes me wonder if there was a KRAP somewhere out west. Did the FCC ever inadvertently assign call letters that turned out to be risque somehow? There was a KOME in California for a while. Farmville NC had WFAG on 1250 through the 60s and 70s. Havelock NC presently has a WANG on 105.1. Any others? GTT Peter H. wrote: If that gets mentioned, then KERN, Bakersfield (Kern County) should probably be mentioned, too. KERN is cool. The call letters refer to the Spanish word CUMBRE, translated to English is SUMMIT. Bob Radil A ?subject=NewsgroupRes ponse" E-Mail /A |

IIRC it's the station that's now KJUG (K-JUG), but the logo is a moonshine jug, not a Dolly Parton jug g. Mark Howell |

Not currently on the FCC lists, but a sort of related call with a history of its own is. There's a WKRP-LP (TV) licensed to Washington DC. W-KRaP? Wonder if the TV show producers saw it that way. Why anyone with a real station would WANT those calls is also a different matter. Who has KCUF? There was a WKRP-AM in Atlanta for a short time in the 70's, designed specifically to cash in on the TV show's popularity. The stars of the show were invited to appear on the station's first day of broadcasting but none showed. The FCC denied the calls until someone pointed out that MTM Productions was not an actual licensee. The first record played on the new station came up at the wrong speed. Potential advertisers thought it was a joke. It was a daytime- only station with all sorts of signal problems. As I recall, it lasted less than a year. There was a station that had the call WKRP and I worked for that station in
1981-1982. It was WKRP in Dallas, GA. Mitch Lepord put the station on the air in 1979. It was suspose to be WDLS, but WKLS in Atlanta (96 Rock), said those calls were too close to the 96 Rock calls, and Mitch went after the WKRP ID. And yes, it was a Crappy station to work for. 1500 KHZ, 1000 Watt daytimers, 500 Watts CH and no presunrise authroization. Mitch started it off with a format of playing one country record, then one rock record. It sucked. First record on WKRP Dallas was 'Lonsome looser'. It's now WDPC playing gospel music. I did mornings there for a while. Still have airchecks and press from those days. Then walked out on them in October 1982, when the owner threatend to fire me for low sales numbers (and I was a sales/jock and hated the sales side of it). I went to WFOM in November, 1982 and played rock, until that station got sold in 1983 and changed to christain music. WKRP was crap, it sucked working there. I worked at WMMW 1470 AM Radio in Meriden, Connecticut for a while after
I got out of school as a DJ - Announcer. It was a 1,000 watt day time station when I worked there. I would always tell people that WMMW stood for We Make Meriden Wonderful. Thanks and Take Care, From, Tom Coss, Meriden,CT. |
