January 2020 (1/2 - 1/29) Nielsen Audio PPM Ratings Day 4: Rickey Smiley
Fuels Radio One R&B Gains

Posted: 21 Feb 2020 02:00 PM PST
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/1...-one-rb-gains/

The fourth and final day of Nielsen Audios PPM releases bring Austin,
Raleigh/Durham, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Nashville, Providence, Norfolk,
Jacksonville, West Palm Beach, Greensboro, Memphis, and Hartford.

All the numbers can be found at RadioInsight.com/Ratings.

Numbers of note include:

The move of the Rickey Smiley Show to Radio Ones RB stations following the
end of the Tom Joyner Morning Show to kick off 2020, appears to be paying
immediate dividends there, but also harming the Hip Hop stations the show
was moved off. In Indianapolis, RB 106.7 WTLC-FM rose 5.2 to 5.8, while Hip
Hop Hot 96.3 WHHH dropped 3.7 to 2.7. In Raleigh/Durham, RB Foxy 107/104
WFXC/WFXK returned to #1 in the market with a 7.2 to 8.7 rise, but Hip Hop
K97.5 WQOK slid 6.3 to 5.1 with the new Morning Hustle anchoring its
lineup. The same trends occurred in yesterdays St. Louis numbers as well.
The impeachment trial helped more News/Talk stations in todays markets as
iHeartMedias Talk 106.1 WTKK Raleigh rose 5.3 to 7.1, Emmis 93.1 WIBC
jumped 5.4 to 7.6, Cumulus 630 WPRO/99.7 WEAN-FM Providence rose 2.5 to
3.7, and Cox Media Groups 104.5 WOKV-FM Jacksonville took a piece of the
market lead with a 8.3 to 9.8 gain.
Tying WOKV-FM atop the Jacksonville market is Renda AC 96.1 WEJZ with an
18.4 to 9.8 post-Christmas music slide.
The two Country stations in Jacksonville are heading in opposite directions
as Rendas Gator Country 99.9 WGNE-FM trends 3.7 4.0 5.5, while
iHeartMedias 99.1 WQIK has gone 7.0 4.0 4.6.
The Country battle in Nashville became decisively one-sided this month.
iHeartMedias 97.9 WSIX jumped from a 4.7 to 6.4, while Cumulus Medias
Nash-FM 103.3 WKDF fell 4.4 to 3.3.
Cromwell Rock 102.9 The Buzz WBUZ Nashville is trending downward with a
4.4 3.6 2.8 move.
Sarkes Tarzian AAA 92.3 WTTS Indianapolis jumps up a share point from 3.8
to 4.7.
Entercoms 95.7 RB WVKL Norfolk continues its utter dominance of the market
as it once again rises from 14.1 to 14.4. iHeartMedia Hip Hop 103 Jamz
102.9 WOWI follows in second at a 7.4 share.
iHeartMedia CHR Kiss 95.7 WKSS Hartford jumps nearly two share points from
a 5.5 to 7.4.
Entercom AC 99.1 The Mix WMYX and iHeartMedia Classic Hits 95.7 Big-FM WRIT
tie atop the Milwaukee market with 7.9 shares. Milwaukee Radio Alliance AC
B93.3 WLDB was helped by its Christmas music run as it placed third with a
7.3 well up from the 5.7 it had in November.
iHeartMedia Gospel Hallelujah 95.7 WHAL-FM Memphis surges to a second place
tie with a 6.5 7.0 8.3 trend. iHearts RB V101 KJMS remains on top with a
9.2 share, while Cumulus RB 103.5 WRBO slides 8.5 to 8.3.
Hubbard West Palm Beach scored a top three trifecta as Hot AC 97.9 WRMF
rose 7.7 to 8.8 to reclaim the lead from co-owned Classic Hits Sunny 107.9
WEAT as its Christmas music fueled 12.5 share dropped to 7.4. Hubbard RB
X102.3 WMBX jumped to third with a 5.0 to 6.8 gain. Two iHeartMedia
stations also had big gains as AC Kool 105.5 WOLL rose 4.6 to 6.3 for
fourth and Classic Rock Gater 98.7 WKGR was up 3.9 to 5.0 for fifth.
Noticeably no longer subscribing to Nielsens PPM ratings are Saga
Communications and Curtis Media.

Posted: 21 Feb 2020 01:26 PM PST
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/1...-morning-show/

Entercom Hot AC Y98 98.1 KYKY St. Louis has announced a new on-air lineup
and name for its morning show.

What had most recently been just the Y98 Morning Show is now The Wake Up
with Jen Tim as Jen Myers and Tim Convy take lead roles, while Kevin
Berghoff and Lance Hildebrand remain as contributors. The show had been
Courtney Company until the exits of Courtney Landrum and midday host Jill
Devine in early December.

Julie Tristan will move from weekends/fill-in to midday host. Tristan
co-hosted mornings at iHeartMedia Classic Hits 103.3 KLOU from 2015 until
last March. She also was part of the Steve DC Show at 101.1 WVRV in the
mid 2000s and was a host and anchor at KSDK-TV from 2007-2015.

Paul Cook will remain in afternoons and the station will continue to be
jockless in evenings and overnights.

Entercom, a leading media and entertainment company and one of the two
largest radio broadcasters in the U.S., announced a new weekday programming
lineup for Y98 (KYKY-FM), St. Louis’ only hot adult contemporary station,
effective immediately. The station’s morning show will relaunch as “The
Wake Up with Jen Tim,” hosted by Jen Myers and Tim Convy, with
contributions from Kevin Berghoff and Lance Hildebrand. “The Wake Up with
Jen Tim” will air weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. CT.

In addition to the morning show, the station promoted Julie Tristan to host
of the midday show. Tristan will be heard weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00
p.m. On-air host Paul Cook will continue hosting Y98’s afternoon drive.

“From day one, Jen, Tim, Kevin and Lance have impressed me with their
energy, passion and desire to learn and win, and they have elevated our
morning show in a short time,” said Becky Domyan, Senior Vice President and
Market Manager, Entercom St. Louis. “I’m equally excited about the addition
of Julie Tristan to our weekday programming. She has an amazing track
record of success in the market. She is an unstoppable talent, and her
charitable contributions to the community have been tremendous as well. As
the No. 1 creator of live and local audio content, our station aims to
serve our community with content and information they rely on, and I’m
looking forward to our revamped lineup driving the iconic Y98 to continued
success.”

“I’m excited to continue my career in St. Louis, connecting with members of
the community on a daily basis,” said Tristan. “I can’t wait to deliver
upbeat content to our audience as they tune in during their workdays.”

Julie Tristan is an Emmy-nominated multimedia journalist who has nearly two
decades of experience as an on-air personality in radio and television in
St. Louis. She has also served as a professional photographer, writer and
editor in both industries and founded her own video production company 8
Dogs Video. She also currently serves as a producer and announcer for

Playlist 94.5 Debuts In Pensacola

Posted: 21 Feb 2020 01:05 PM PST
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/1...as-radio-94-5/

ADX Communications relaunched 94.5 W233CM/WYCT-HD2 Pensacola FL as
Pensacolas Playlist 94.5 on February 14.

The station has shifted to a broader AC with the 2pm hour today featuring:

Daniel Powter Bad Day
Lauren Daigle You Say
Aerosmith I Dont Want To Miss A Thing
Pink Just Like Fire
Carrie Underwood Before He Cheats
Michael Jackson The Way You Make Me Feel
Adele Someone Like You
Nickelback Far Away
Max ft. Gnash Lights Down Low
Billy Joel My Life
Rihanna w/Mikky Ekko Stay
Naked Eyes Always Something There To Remind Me
Sam Smith & Normani Dancing With A Stranger
Cardigans Lovefool
Police Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic

The format places Playlist creates a direct competitor next door on the
dial to Cumulus AC Soft Rock 94.1 WMEZ, while iHeartMedia AC Mix 99.9 WMXC
Mobile AL is also audible throughout the Pensacola market.

Right after the relaunch, the station had to deal with being off the air
much of Monday afternoon and evening as as a man fleeing from police
climbed the ADX tower for seven hours.

Original Report 1/13: Two months of Christmas Music and thirteen days of
different versions of Baby Shark, ADX Communications has launched AC 94.5
Pensacolas Blend on W233CM/WYCT-HD2 Pensacola FL.

But is there enough differentiation in the name to prevent a C&D from
SiriusXM, which uses The Blend as the name of its AC format and holds a
trademark on it? The company has been known to quickly issue C&Ds to
infringing stations such as these in Denver and Fargo.

Update 1/1: After two months of Christmas music, ADX Communications 94.5
W233CM/WYCT-HD2 Pensacola FL has dropped the temporary Christmas Radio 94.5
branding and is now stunting with multiple versions of Baby Shark, while
promoting a new format being under construction.

Original Report 11/5: After moving Sports ESPN Pensacola 94.5
W233CM/WYCT-HD2 Pensacola FL to 1330 WEBY/99.1 W256DL in August, ADX
Communications has begun the process of debuting a new format on 94.5

The station is currently broadcasting as WYCT Christmas Radio 94.5 and
promoting that they will launch a new format on January 1, 2020. WYCTs
primary signal remains Country Cat Country 98.7.

Final Listen: WAAF Boston

Posted: 21 Feb 2020 07:00 AM PST
https://radioinsight.com/ross/184569...n-waaf-boston/

A lot of people like to time major announcements to the Country Radio
Seminar, including, apparently, Christian broadcaster EMF. It was at CRS
last year that WPLJ New York, WRQX (Mix 107.3) Washington, D.C., and
several other Cumulus outlets were sold to the Christian AC K-Love owner.
This year, it was Entercom’s longtime Active Rock outlet WAAF Boston,
prompting the inevitable “from rock to rock of ages” headline in the local
press.
When I first became aware of WAAF growing up, it was “the Worcester rock
station” for those who went beyond the progressive WBCN and “kickass” rival
WCOZ. But WAAF outlasted both stations. In the early ‘90s, it went through
a brief stint as hair-band-driven “Rock 40” under consultant John Gorman.
In the late ‘90s, now unarguably a Boston outlet, it got into an extreme
rock battle with WBCN (then nominally still Alternative) over who was “the
Godsmack” station.
Like many Active Rock stations, WAAF expanded and became more reliant on
library. It never became Active Rock in name only. At the end, it was
dealing with former Alternative outlet WBOS Boston, which became the last
entrant in the trend toward “next generation Classic Rock stations,” which
is to say Active without those pesky currents. And I’ve felt more
enthusiastic about the currents in Active lately.
During these “Final Listens,” I’m always on the lookout for “were they
still trying to do radio?” and WAAF was. There was a new Pearl Jam song
that was both front and backsold. There was a crossover between veteran
middayer Mistress Carrie and the afternoon host about the Black Crowes, and
about the airline passenger who filmed her seatmate jostling her because
she was reclining. Here’s WAAF just before 2 p.m. on February 18, several
hours ahead of the sale announcement and during its second “Workday Blitz”
music bloc.

Metallica, “The Unforgiven”
Buckcherry, “Crazy Bitch”
Faith No More, “Epic (What Is It?)”
Black Crowes, “She Talks To Angels”
Volbeat f/Neil Fallon, “Die To Live”
Bush, “Machinehead”
Staind, “It’s Been Awhile”
Seven Mary Three, “Cumbersome”
Pearl Jam, “Superblood Wolfmoon”—Carrie mentions that the new Pearl Jam
album sounds a little like Talking Heads, before adding “not this one.”
Then she backsold it by mentioning that people were texting the station to
find out what it was
Black Sabbath, “Iron Man”
Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Dani California”
Offspring, “The Kids Aren’t Alright”
Shinedown, “Attention Attention”
Theory of a Deadman, “Bad Girlfriend”

Big 95.5 Chicago To Debut Throwback Weekends

Posted: 21 Feb 2020 06:40 AM PST
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/1...ime-this-week/

As it winds down the remainder of its Top 1000 Country Songs of All Time
countdown it is running this week, iHeartMedia Country Big 95.5 WEBG
Chicago will debut Throwback Weekends.

Starting at 1pm on Fridays and on Saturdays and Sundays, WEBG will feature
a broader mix of music from the 80s through now. The station will remain
focused on a more current based playlist at all other times.

BIG 95.5, Chicago’s New Country, announced today the debut of “Throwback
Weekends,” effective immediately. “Throwback Weekends” will broadcast
starting at 1:00 p.m. on Friday afternoons.

“Throwback Weekends” will feature Country music’s greatest songs from the
80s and 90s, along with the newest Country hits. Leading up to the debut of
“Throwback Weekends,” BIG 95.5 is honoring country music’s deep roots by
counting down the Top 1,000 Country songs of all time, as ranked by a Blue
Ribbon panel of Country experts.

“Throughout the countdown, we’ve heard from country fans all over
Chicagoland who want more of Country music’s greatest hits on the radio
mixed with best new Country music,” said Lance Houston, Program Director
for BIG 95.5. “We are always listening and are happy to give our listeners
more of what they want. We will continue to be No. 1 for new Country music
in Chicago, while excited to provide a bigger variety of songs and sounds.
Country music has always had a thousand different sounds and we are
delighted to celebrate all of them.”

Original Report 2/17: iHeartMedia Country Big 95.5 WEBG Chicago is dropping
its regular format this week to present a countdown of the top 1000 Country
songs of all time as selected by a selected panel of country experts.

The countdown is running daily this week from 9am to 8pm and wrapping up
over the upcoming weekend. In a podcast announcement last week, Program
Director Lance Houston and APD/afternoon host Brooke Taylor explained how
they put the list together, with the station selecting a blue-ribbon panel
to consider songs based on songwriting, artist contribution to country
music history, historical and popular cultural significance of a song,
sales and/or streaming data, radio airplay, and peak chart position.

At this point there does not seem to be any changes to follow the weeklong
programming stunt. The station will continue to air the Bobby Bones Show in
mornings and regular programming at night. The purpose of the countdown
appears to be simply to generate some attention for the low-rated station
this week and get some new listeners to discover the station. WEBG has
hovered in the low to mid 1 share range for the past several months, with a
1.2 in the Holiday 2019 Nielsen Audio ratings.
