CHAMPAIGN-URBANA -- Assistant Director for Technology (Chief Engineer) WILL-AM-FM-TV
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR FOR TECHNOLOGY
(Chief Engineer) Division of Broadcasting, WILL AM-FM-TV University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign THE STATIONS: WILL-AM, WILL-FM, and WILL-TV are public broadcasting stations licensed to the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois and affiliated with NPR, PRI, and PBS. WILL-AM/580, on the air since 1922, operates 24 hours per day and is primarily a news and information station serving more than half of Illinois and half of Indiana with a directional antenna system. WILL-FM/90.9, established in 1941, is the most powerful FM station in Illinois at 105,000 watts on a 1,000-foot tower and is a 24-hour primarily classical music station. WILL-TV, founded in 1955, provides public television programming to east central Illinois. The stations are housed in Campbell Hall for Public Telecommunication, a new broadcasting facility on the university campus. THE LOCATION: The University of Illinois is located in the adjacent cities of Urbana and Champaign, Illinois that offer the advantages of medium-sized city living (110,000 population), with easy proximity to Chicago (135 miles), St. Louis (175 miles), and Indianapolis (120 miles). The university setting (38,000 students) provides a rich cultural environment, many sports and entertainment events, and a variety of recreation facilities. Local schools, libraries, and park systems are excellent. THE POSITION: This is a full-time academic-professional position. The employee reports to the radio and television station managers on all technical matters related to the individual stations and to the director of broadcasting on major technical initiatives affecting the Division of Broadcasting. The employee will: Be responsible for maintenance and operations of the technical infrastructure of the WILL stations, including satellite, subcarrier, remote broadcasting, all transmitters, and AM directional antenna arrays. Supervise engineers and engineering operations staff, acting as a mentor to encourage personal and professional growth. Utilize emerging technologies including radio/television digital production, automation and transmission, computer-based audio and video platforms, and the latest on-line program delivery systems. Participate in goal setting and planning, establish priorities and meet deadlines for all technical projects. Prepare budgets and supervise the acquisition and installation of all broadcast equipment. Assure compliance with all FCC and University of Illinois rules and regulations. QUALIFICATIONS: A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering or similar field, SBE certification, at least 5 years' work experience in broadcast engineering, preferably in both radio and television, and extensive broadcast engineering management experience with well-developed interpersonal and management skills are required. Additional requirements: A thorough understanding of digital theory and emerging computer technologies used in broadcasting, including experience with the ENCO DAD or similar audio technology. Substantial experience in radio and television studio and transmitter operation and maintenance, including experience in the measurement and adjustment of the performance of AM directional antenna arrays. Thorough knowledge of FCC broadcast rules, regulations and licensing requirements. Strong leadership skills and the ability to maintain personal relationships in accordance with the Character and Aspirations Statement of the Division of Broadcasting.
