This from http://www.thesuperstation.co.uk/sale.htm (superb photos there as
well). "This is the former home of Laser 558. The MV Communictor is currently situated in St Margarets Hope in the Orkney Islands. The ship has a 200 ft radio transmission mast along with 4 generators and engines needing attention. The MV Communicator was vandalised during her time in Holland and requires some TLC. Steeped in history there are only 2 working radio ships left in the World. Recently used as The Superstation this piece of broadcasting history is a fantastic marketing tool for any radio station. Built in 1954 by Abeking & Rasmussen in Lemwerder/Bremen (West Germany) for Det Stavangerske Dampskipsselskap (DSD) in Stavanger (Norway) as a cargo vessel. The tonnage of the vessel was 477 GRT, 190 NRT and 575 TDW and the vessel measured 186,8 / 29,3 / 8,7. The ship was one of six similar ships owned and operated by the company to carry cargo between Bergen, Stavanger and Oslo. Before renamed MV Communicator the ship was called Tananger, Charterer and Gardline Seeker. NO Radio equpiment is included in the sale. Offers over £25k." (Thanks to Steve Martin for telling us about this). |
