KATL
Anyone know anything about KATL?
I don't think this station exists anymore does it? I've got someone's card: King H. Robinson - General Manager. Seems that in the 1940's (year of this card I think) the station was located in State National Bulding. TIA. |

I did a search on Google, and there is a "State National Building" in Houston, Texas, and in the 1940s there was a radio station there with call letters KATL. I couldn't find any information about what call letters the Houston station known as KATL has now (those letters are currently used by a station in Miles City, Montana), or if the station even exists anymore. Here's a Rockabilly history page that mentions KATL and Houston in the 40s: http://www.rockabillyhall.com/SRAB.html and here's a picture of the State National Building in Houston: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/...ing.php?ID=208 Hope this helps! - Merle |

I don't understand this site: http://www.katlradio.com/ Does not look like a proper radio website! to me :c) I thought KATL was a Texas station originally. |

I don't understand this site: http://www.katlradio.com/ Does not look like a proper radio website! to me :c) I thought KATL was a Texas station originally. I've been trying to figure this out for quite a while too. The KATL that's in Miles City MT was originally known as KRJF. In the early to middle '60's...for some reason that I don't know....all of a sudden they became KATL...same owners...same broadcast facility...same frequency. The owners of KRJF/KATL at that time had the last name of either Scanlan or Scanlon...I'm not sure of the spelling. They owned the local newspaper here too. I remember all this happening...I was a kid then...but I don't ever remember hearing the reason for the sudden change. Of course just being a kid, I really didn't care why back then either. Years later when I became curious about it, there was nobody here could remember the reason for change. KATL here even stayed on the original KRJF freq of 1340 until about 10 years ago when they changed to what they're on today...770. I do remember the reason for the freq change...it had something to do with the upgrade of transmitting power from 5,000 to 10,000 watts. If anyone knows anything about this...I'd like to know too. The only thing that I could figure out on this so far is that the call sign of KRJF is still not being used anymore by anyone else. Ben |

According to White's Radio Log, in 1951 KATL was operating in Houston,
Texas on 1590 kc at 5000 watts. Then, White's Radio Log in 1973 shows KYOK in Houston on 1590 kHz at 5000 watts. According to the FCC website KYOK became KMIC in 1999, and is now a Disney station. KATL is much more memorable than the other calls. Many stations change calls to ones that are more promotion-friendly. They do nave cattle ranches in Montana, right? Makes perfect sense. Just as the Houston station was sold to the operator of Black stations, who had "OK" in many of his call letter combinations. KATL was not a good Black call, compared to the "OK" moniker. |

Thanks for pointing me to the National State Building etc. I've actually got a pair of headphones belonging to the General Manager of KATL in the 1940's. And his card. I bought them on Ebay. I just was curious of what the history was. Maybe somone living in Houston knows. Or there are some old directories. Maybe if I write to a Houston Newspaper. :c) |

I haven't checked Texas calls since last year to see if there has been any changes since. Hope this helps! |
