No I haven't looked at my friend Google or looked for some other

I'm looking for a hand held radio that, not a cb, I'm sure, has a range
in the neighborhood of 50 miles. Where I hunt there is no cell phone
service and it's way too far for hand held cb radio. If I get stck or
something happens I might have a long wait. I have a couple of FRS and
GMRS multi channel radios that have a max range of 15 miles so it is
possible that there is a radio out there now to fit my needs.
Anyone have anything on the subject?

Satellite phone is expensive, but it appears that is what you need.

You hike in 50 miles? Damn!!! Ever consider hunting in an area where
you can drive a truck?

We get lost hunters up here every year. Already had several this
season. It's always either a lone hunter or someone that broke off
from their hunting buddy. Oddly enough, they are usually found within
a couple miles of safety.

If you choose to defy the buddy system then you can rent a sat-phone,
but you still need a clear shot at the satellite which isn't always
possible in the hills. Even heavy timber and bad weather can screw up
your signal.

There's a company (can't remember the name) that makes an emergency
beacon that triggers automatically if not reset every 12 hours or so.
That would be my second choice. My first choice is not to go hunting
alone.

And hopefully he can hit a repeater from where he hunts that has someone
monitoring, or a phone patch?
