There are antenna designs that radiate most of their power skyward,

high
angle, for short range comms.. I can't recall the name at the

moment.

N.V.I.S. (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave)

Hi Bert.

That's a great link. Very informative. I've always thought an extremly

high
angle of radiation would be a great local talk tool but I've never tried
anything to test that theory (damned apartment complex rules). The

artical
says 200 miles radius +/- 100. I wonder what it would be like on 11

meters.
Anyone here try that on 10?

Thanks again.

Not sure, most guys use it for 40...but 11 should work just fine. Seems
kinda opposite to the conventional wisdom of "get it as high as you can."

Go
for it and please let me know how it works out, good luck.

I think I will try this. I'm gonna pester a freind into leting me use his
back yard for experimentation. I'm in an appartment and have no way to test
it here. I'll let you know how it goes.

Looks like a no go, 27 MHz is way too high to be reflected, according to

the
data on their site.

Well, one more reason to upgrade :)

Hello again Dave.

hmmm... it says that the freqs are "usually" " 2-10 MHz, though sometimes
the limit is higher."
I figured that NVIS should work every time 11 meter skip started to roll.
no?

I think I want to try it. I'm planning to ask a friend to let me put an
antenna in his back yard and help me do some testing when the conditions are
right. I can always put a switch so he can flip back to his Antron. Maybe we
can use that to do some comparisons too.

Good luck, it may work at some times, but more than 3X their max, seems
pretty chancy.
That being said, I know people are working packet on 2 meters, with auroral
and meteor skip.
The paths only last seconds though..
