I wonder how many alternators they had to install. If I turn the gain up
on
mine I lose tons of horse power.

Horse power and wattts can be converted in a linear equation, all you need
to know at this point is the efficiency of your amp and alternator. My

old
rig pulled 11HP, haven't calculated the new one but the sub amp is digital
and WAY more efficient. it will beat your head on the dash and I still

have
yet to see it pull more than 25A.

The mid/hi's (biamped) (for the audiophiles) are class A/B biased into A

for
a long time it runs pretty warm for such a light load so I loose it there
:).

Chad

I've never put an ammeter on it, but it's fused at 150 amps. Neon's aren't
known for having any horse power anyway. It's a very slow car.

I haven't had it in the mud yet. I need longer front brake hoses before I
get too wild with it. I also want to get my radio and antennae installed as
there is no cell service where I go mudding.

Each amp channel is seeing 1 ohm, I would never do this to an amp I paid
money for.

Speakers have an impedance response much like antenna's, It's actually
dipping below 2 ohms at certain freqs. You don't know which unless you have
done an impedance plot on the box. I take it you are using 2 (X) 4 ohm
subs? Try it in 4 ohm stereo and see if you gain fidelity. You should get
a lot more headroom and more "punch" (god I hate that word). You need that
reserve capacity for metal because the attack of a 20" Tama pro star is much
greater than that of your average Roland 808 beat box.

I see it all the time in Pro audio, people see the big power number and go
for it, under the mentality of "if the number is bigger it has to sound
better".

If it's in your truck you probably won't notice a max output difference due
to the fact that the transfer function starts so high and your skin is not
as sensitive to tactile "hearing" as your ears are. It will just be quicker
and sound better. Metallica "one" is asways good to see if an amp is
running out of poop in the dynamic end. Each one of those double kick stabs
should sound the same. If the first has great attack and the rest just
rumble you are killing the power supply and should unload it a tad.

Keep in mind these are crude methods but often work and are easy to explain
in a CB newsgroup.

Good luck, Chad

The amp is rated at 1 ohm stereo 2 ohms mono, but you are correct, I went
for putting out max power and I have to keep the gain turned down the way it
is set up. I'll swap it and try the metallica method and see what it sounds
like. I would rather it sound good at lower wattage anyway, particularly
since I went to the expense of buying high end infinity kappa perfect subs.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

Yeah, yeah. Metalhead here as well... I just meant it's ridiculous that
they chose to select rock music as an example of the IDIOTS that are driving
around with systems so loud they can't hear an emergency vehicle behind them
and then they're sitting so low in their cars they couldn't see it either!!

Looks to me like the writer is afraid...NOBODY can possibly write an article
about LOUD stereo's in cars these days and not mention rap.

Rock Music indeed!!

I NEVER hear "ROCK MUSIC" blaring from an auto....it's ALWAYS RAP.

Anyway, I think it's a good idea. I never liked LOUD music in a car

because
of the safety factor. Park it in your garage, close the doors and pump
it
up.

How do you like the subs? I was going to buy the original green Kappa's
because they got rave reviews, when the perfect came out they were quite
inexpensive. But typical to my nature it never happened and I settled on JL
Audio 10W0's.

I'm car shopping now and was thinking of those subs, I'm still torn due to
the fact that I still have an old JBL1500GTI that needs reconed (they were
based on the 2226 pro driver), I loved that sub in the caddy because it was
so true to life and ever so fast (Pantera reproduction)

I always go for fidelity first, if you have the power and know how to make
it sound fantastic then volume will follow. I tell the car audio nerds
around here each of my 5, yep only 5, speakers have their own channel of
amplification and crossover, they get lost. No it ain't as loud as theirs,
but it will hurt, AND it will play Vivaldi convincingly and a bosendorfer
grand sounds as if the player is using your lap as a piano bench.

To make it even more confusing they can also be called class T because a

DOH! (sound of two one-sixteenth notes on the snare, followed by a
single crash on the Zildjian)

Good to see a fellow metal head. We are a

dying breed.

I have a friend my age (we were Sabbath fans as teens back in the
early-mid seventies) who hasn't missed an Ozfest since it started. I was
giving him guff about being an "elder" among all those kids and he said
that while that is probably true, they see his tats (he's sleeved) and
figure he's probably cool "for an old dude"..lol. BTW, he did say that
Judas Priest stole the show this year.

Hehe..funny analogy. :)

I work for the University Of Illinois School Of Music, We teach primarily
Classical and Jazz performance and all types of composition. You should
see some of our piano performance people (ladies). The analogy will then
become, er, more than just funny :)

HA! Leg check on those 88's!

And you gotta make sure those pedals aren't squeakin! You sometimes have to
get really close to hear it! And put your ear down to them.

You do any hunting out there in them thar boonies?

You betcha! It's bow season for deer. The

deer in this area are thick. We rank in the top

5 counties every year.

Yea,,,I know them Ozarks are full of deer. Mountains are a beautiful
change from the swamp for hunting deer. As it stands now, I won't hunt
deer (anymore) unless it's above the freeze line and that's sometimes
tough to do in Florida. If you get a nice rack this year, post a pic.
Good luck.

I'll do that. I've passed on 2 small bucks and a number of doe, mainly
because I put $20 in on the big buck contest. If I don't have a nice rack
by Dec. 1 then I will most likely shoot the first available deer I see.
After all I can't eat antlers.

I wonder how many alternators they had to install. If I turn the gain
up
on
mine I lose tons of horse power.

Horse power and wattts can be converted in a linear equation, all you
need
to know at this point is the efficiency of your amp and alternator. My

old
rig pulled 11HP, haven't calculated the new one but the sub amp is
digital
and WAY more efficient. it will beat your head on the dash and I still

have
yet to see it pull more than 25A.

Those "digitial amps" are really called class "D" and they can range

from
90
percent or better in efficiency.

To make it even more confusing they can also be called class T because a
certain company, tripower I think, makes a proprietary one chip wonder
driver circuit. same operation different name. I prefer to call them
switchers :)

I have an application note in one of my National Semiconductor data books
for a high speed comparator chip that shows it being used in a switching
type amplifier. Its a real simple circuit believe it or not. The design used
bi-polar power transistors for the output. Now you can buy complete high
power switching amp chips from several vendors with outputs up to 100 watts
in some of the ads I saw. I don't use them for any designs I do so I don't
really pay much attention to who sells them. I would assume that doing an
Internet search would turn up some of vendors.
