I don't know if fear was a factor for his work. But he did create a
stereotype. It was even adopted in other fictional characters such as
Dr. No (James Bond), Ming from the Buck Rogers serials, and that bad
guy Lo Pan in "Big Trouble in Little China" (made back when Kim
Catrall was hot).

Dope might be an interesting read.
