Can anyone tell me the characteristics of the Maxitune diode? I have been
looking for a cheaper, alternative source, which I may have found, but I
don't know the original specs of the Maxitune.

A varactor or vari-cap diode with supposedly much better characteristics
than standard varactors. CBC International used to have them for sale and
they were close to $10 a piece a few years ago. However, I have recently
come across some low cost, high capacitance varactors that I'm wondering
whether or not they will suffice for the same applications as the Maxitune,
but I don't know what the original specs of the Maxitune are.

What you need is a diode with a hyperabrupt tuning characteristic. It should
cost under two dollars.

Pete is right... but not all hyper-abrupt varactor diodes are the same.
You need to review the specs to find the capacitance range you want at
a given voltage.
