LOL, sure do Mopar!

Gawd, been a bit of a mess. Due to a new job paying almost 4 times what I
was making, I am without a paycheck for a few weeks. Due to the rising cost
of gas, I held back on paying the phone bill until I was certain of enough
funding for gas, food, etc. Well, I had sufficient funds including a party
(beer, whisky, vodka, etc) - but sent the check in last week. The phone
company was not amused and cut my DSL off until they were certain the check
cleared (never bounced a check to the phone company). Sigh. No DSL for a
week. From the 17th until yesterday.

Sorry for the delay, but just saw your note. The DSL service was upgraded.
Now running 4 to 7 megabaud (currently slow, only about 450 kilobytes per
second). Not too bad for $29.95 per month LOL.

What kind of upstream rate do you get and whose service is it?

Right now it is running slow. My ADSL is running (at this point) only 3275
down and 318 up. The upload does not go too much faster than it currently
is, but the download rate varies considerable. I did get over 7000 one day
and it is usually over 4000. I do believe that my hard drive speed is
hurting the performance as it can only transfer about 1.5 MB per second.
Also, I am running the ADSL through USB 1.1 which means the transfer rate is
becoming substantial for that old port.

Yesterday, I was running about 450 KB per second as I downloaded Adobe and
Yahoo Messenger (I am still installing programs after a gasp reformat
necessitated by an ill-performing program. All is well, I'm just getting
programs re-installed ;)

I am subscribed to Frontiernet. There is currently a lot of competition
between Roadrunner and Frontier. Both are offering bundled telephone,
Internet, and television (Frontier has partnered with Dish network). One
can end up with everything for under $100.00 per month :))

Hello, again, Leland

My error. As you know, I had to reformat. Stupid me, one has to edit the
registry a tad to improve performance if on broadband.

I'm running about 550 kilobytes per second transfer now after adjusting
settings this morning. I'm running well over 32 kB up and 550 kB down per
second. Peak down was almost 700 kB. I'm sure my poor hard drive is
hurting performance here as I see the DSL stop for just a tiny fraction of a
second when the hard drive is being accessed. A new pc with ultra dma and
USB 2.0 (or ethernet) should improve average throughput quite a bit (not to
mention getting something a bit faster than 733 MHz LOL).

Maybe I should replace that old thing. That stupid stepper motor causes me
to have to do a low-level format every few months :)))
(just kidding, but no dma on the hard drive. That hurts - or is it Hertz?)

Best regards from Rochester, NY
Jim

What did you do, adjust the MTU setting?

Yep ;)

I'm running about 550 kilobytes per second transfer now after adjusting
settings this morning. I'm running well over 32 kB up and 550 kB down

per
second. Peak down was almost 700 kB.

I've had around the same using a cable modem with Comcast. They have about
the same down stream rate as your DSL line and their up stream rate is
around 700 to 800 Kbps, thats K bits per second. I upgraded from around

380
Kbps up stream, the normal rate for standard service, since I like to run
the Linux grapical desktop remotely when I'm out on the road. Most of the
mid price level hotels have free high speed Internet access in the rooms.

I suspect that after this price war between cable and DSL, there will likely
be 3 levels for the consumer to choose from. I suspect they will offer the
360 kbps down and 128 up for the $29.95 rate, the old 3000 kbps down and 360
or so up for $39.95 and likely offer the upgraded service as 6,000 or 7,000
kbps down and an upgraded speed for uploads such as you have mentioned. I
haven't heard anything, this is just a guess on my part.

I'm sure my poor hard drive is
hurting performance

I've got a Microcenter computer store down the street from me and I picked
up a couple of new Western Digital PATA 120 GB dives for around $40 each
after all of the rebates some months back. They're perfect for upgrading
older machines on the cheap as long as the old bios can handle the larger
drive. Linux has it's own drivers for PATA drives, it doesn't use the

bios,
so as long as you can get the machine to boot and install the OS it

doesn't
matter if the full capacity is supported in the bios or not. Windows it a
different story.

True enough, Leland, but this old compooter is an e-tower 733i and
e-machines are not particularly known for their robust and overspeced power
supplies. I don't think I'd care to try packing a good, big, hard drive in
this thing as the power supply just might run a little short on electrons.
