Radio receives, won't transmit - why?

Hi,
I have a Uniden PRO510XL hooked to a Firestik II FS 3ft (maybe it's
4ft, I don't remember), which is hood mounted on a S-10 P/U. SWR
reading is less than 2 ( I can re-measure and get exact #s if wanted).
I have clear reception (based on listening on the highway, I assume a
few miles), but I have no transmit capability. To confirm, I went over
to a friends who has a CB in his car and we tried talking to each other
with our vehicles a few feet apart. If we turned down the squelch on
his radio so there was noise and then keyed my mic and spoke, his radio
went silent but no voice went through. I tried swapping mics with him
(since I could receive him no problem), with the same result. Can
someone provide some guidedance on troubleshooting some more? I know
this radio worked in the past, but it was with a different antenna
setup. Since the SWR is okay, does that imply the the antenna setup and
the radio transmit is okay and the problem is with the mic - transmit?

Oops, it's a PRO520XL, not 510.

When you transmitted and your friend's radio went silent, you were indeed
transmitting, only there was no modulation of the signal. You were
transmitting a pure carrier, and that is why his radio went silent. (power
was going out, but no voice was imposed on it).

Something in the audio path from microphone to the transmit section is not
working. Once upon a time, many years ago, I had a radio that had a PA
switch, which allowed putting a speaker on the car and using it for public
address. Unfortunately, it also transmitted a carrier whenever using it
as a PA, but hardly anyone noticed because it was at so low a level.
Perhaps if your radio has a similar function, that is your problem.

If not, you probably need someone to look at the audio chain through to the
transmit section. As many relatively inexpensive rigs use the same audio
chain for transmit and receive, it's possible that the problem is either in
switching or the microphone preamp circuit....

Good Luck!

Most likely... your microphone cable needs attention.

Also, unless you can do the repair yourself, not bring it to a repair shop.
That is a los cost CB. You can buy a new one instead.

Would also be a good time to treat yourself to a new noise canceling mic : )

Mine did the same thing, it worked great - then one day out of the blue, it
stopped working. It's a cheap radio, not worth the cost/time of repair.
I havn't bought a Uniden radio since. If you buy another uniden,
don't get anything less than 68 or you'll be sorry.
