i decided to get back into dit and hooked up the pk232mbx to my new
computer and it will not talk to the com port is this a software
problem? thanks for any help any one can give me

Try to connect to it with a dumb terminal program. 8N1 setting. Type
*** and you should get the PK232 welcome text and command prompt.
