You should be able to use any terminal program such as the one included with
Windows for example. Or go download WinPack. It is still free I believe
and is an excellent program to use with TNCs.

The MFJ1270b is known worlwide as being a generic TNC2 clone. As a TNC2
clone, it has more software written for it ( free and otherwise ) than any
other TNC design on the planet. There are literally dozens and dozens of
programs that work with the MFJ1270b.

Only a fool would be offended by the fact that some companies charge a
reasonable fee for thier software. - Especially when there are dozens and
dozens of free alternatives.

Anyway does anyone know any today soft who work with this thing?

Sure... Dozens and dozens of them. There is not room to list them all here.
Also, any terminal program should work. You can even use an old "dumb
terminal", if you can find one.

Why i feel like sucker ?

No need for that at all. You just didn't know how lucky you were in your
purchase. The 1270b is a very useful piece of equipment.

Get a clue, this modem was based on an old CP/M machine of the
last century. What the hell do you want? I bet you paid $5 for it, and
now you're complaining that you want it to work like a $25 WiFi card.

Get AGWPE for Win-Dos or a KISS ROM and hook it to Linux. Then
you can relive the 1980's again. But somehow I think this modem is too
complex for you. You seem to be non-technical??

How so?

You'll see lots of TNC source code start at 0x0100 for development.
The Z-80, and I/O on the TNC-2 were all common to CP/M machines.

I developed C programs on my H-89 for TNC-2 for 10 years. My last
project was a port of parts of Xinu on the DRSI TNC-2 modem from
my H-89 CP/M machine.

Ah--C/80 from Software Toolworks! I think I paid $20 bucks for it, and
sold about $20,000 worth of software using it (non-Ham). Alas, my H-89
CRT blew out before the computer did, so I interfaced a Micromint Apple
Sprite Video card (cut off the Apple bus, drilled holes for wires, and super-
glued it into a rectangular hole made into the H-89 development board),
and hooked it up to my TV. 40 characters wasn't the same as 80 though
(once you've seen speed and line length, there's no going back :-) The
color and sprites were neat though. Finally broke down and bought an
IBM clone with a flip-top case, running 4.88 MHz (used that until 1993
when I bought a honkin 66 MHz motherboard!) That's about the time I
got into ISDN routers and really started making money...

Most any communications rs232 type software will work with it. Windows has
a terminal program that will let you run the TNC. You just won't have all
the special hot key commands that are specific to packet. That thing has to
be 10 or 15 years old by now. While I can't speak for the whole world, in
many areas the packet operation is much a thing of the past except for the
DX clusters.

I want to say i love packet and i feel sory to see it dying.
But i believe in it. I believe it still has life.
It can still give services. We need imagination and Speed.
Packet must move on 2 Ghz and more, maby 3 or 4 ,keeping
at the same time the today speeds 1200, 9600 as backup.
New rigs, or maby up converters at the first steps must be build.
A packet up there and fast is not the same with wireless today nets.
It will be more free and controlable from the operator.
This is the first class position who belong to packet.
Real time video, voice and data at the same time.
Thats the packet im dreaming :)
Anyway thanks all for your replies.

I'm sure he meant the chips the TNC's are built around, not the CP/M OS.

I think the "logic" goes - CP/M used Z80 micros, TNC2 clones used Z80
micros, so TNC2 clones are based on an "old CP/M machine"...

(Ah, those were the days... That was real programming... Whatever
happened to 8" floppy disks?)

I must have misread your article as I'd understood it to say that the
code for many TNCs started at 0x100, as it was for cp/m apps.
Returning to my original question, in what way are those TNCs based on
CP/M systems?

I think the "logic" goes - CP/M used Z80 micros, TNC2 clones used Z80
micros, so TNC2 clones are based on an "old CP/M machine"...

(Ah, those were the days... That was real programming... Whatever
happened to 8" floppy disks?)
