to activate Pulau Layang Layang, Spratly Islands (IOTA AS-051), some time
in March 2009 (1-14th was mentioned earlier). However, according to their

OPDX, "I will take antennas for 160/80/40/20/15/10, but this time will
probably operate 40m single band for the contest. Plan is to have a sloper
with passive directors for NW (US/JA) and NE (EU, etc), a dipole at 35 ft.,
and verticals with just a few radials on the other bands. It is possible
that I will be able to access 'Blackbeard's Lookout Tower' that is about
500 ft. away; if so I will hang a long wire and use that on all bands!
(Last year had better antennas at about 80 ft. on the top floor of a hotel;
they worked well!). Radio is a K3, may try to take a 250w amp (the legal
limit in C6A) if I can meet the new travel weight and size limits..." He
will be active outside of the contest. QSL via ND3F, direct preferred or

XU, CAMBODIA (Also XV and XW). Tom, KC0W (ZD7X), who has been working here,

Look for him to be active during the CQWW DX CW Contest (November 29-30th)
as a Single-Op/Low-Power entry, the ARRL 160-Meter Contest (December 5-6th),
the CQ 160-Meter CW Contest (January 23-25th [2009]) and the ARRL DX CW
Contest (February 21-22nd [2009]) as a Single-Op/Low-Power entry. By the
way, his 160m antenna will be a dipole/vertical placed on the beach 5
meters from salt water. In an excerpt from an E-mail sent to OPDX, Tom
informs OPDX of the following: "Anyway, I relocated from St.Helena Island
to Cambodia less than 2 months ago. I was ZD7X on St.Helena..... After
45,000+ QSOs as ZD7X........I also plan on operating from Laos & Vietnam
when my long term (6-8 month DXpedition from Cambodia is over). I visited
Laos & Vietnam a few weeks ago scouting good DX locations. I found some
real nice ones with great take off angles over the ocean, at least in
Vietnam because Laos is land locked.
I have found a GREAT place here in Cambodia on the beach to string up
a dipole over 100% salt water. I kick myself everyday for not bringing
along a vertical for 160. Even one of those MFJ 80/160 verticals would work
OK placed right over the salt water. I have spent the last month+ looking
for tubing for constructing a 80/160 vertical. No such items exist here in
Cambodia!!! Where is Texas Towers when you need them, hihi!!!
As long as propagation exists between us, I believe we should be able to
work something out on 160.......I ONLY work CW.
Out of the 45,000+ QSOs I made as ZD7X over my 11 month DXpedition to
St. Helena, I made about 240 160 meter QSOs. ON4UN (who I did work on 160)
would have died if he saw my ZD7X 160 antenna. It was a 160 meter dipole
with the highest point (the feed point) at 8' above the ground. The ends
of the antenna sloped down to less than 3' off the ground. My rented home
was about 1 mile from the ocean, so the direct effects of the salt water
could not have been that great on the antenna.
I feel that my new 160 antenna with with both legs placed right over
the ocean will help my signal pretty well......Time will tell. As on St.
Helena, it all boils down to propagation on 160. As you know, 160 is a
VERY weird band according to openings.
You are correct not seeing my TENATIVE call of XU7XXX on the DX Clusters
yet. It should be issued in the next 7-10 days or so according to the
radio licensing guy I met with. My call must first be approved by the
Cambodian Minister of Communications.....
Best from Cambodia, Tom - ZD7X, TO0O,KC0W (XU7XXX?)"
ADDED NOTES: QSL via KC0W, DIRECT ONLY. However, he mentions that QSLing
may take up to 8 months or longer. He also states, "After operating from
