KH4, MIDWAY ISLAND. It was announced this past week by Tom/N4XP and
Dave/WB4JTT (edited): "A multi-national team of 19 operators will activate
Midway Island in October 2009. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USF&WLS)
has authorized amateur operation from this rare U.S. entity for only a
10 day period, its first radio activity in almost 10 years. Midway Island
ranks number 24 worldwide and number 13 in Europe on the DX Magazine's
"Most Wanted List". Activity will be on 6 meters to 160 meters with 5 to
6 stations. At least one station will be active on 20 meters around the
clock for those who need it for a new country. Major efforts will be made
to meet the demand to the most needed geographical areas, the low bands
and RTTY. Team members are Joe/AA4NN, Carlos/EA1IR, Franz/DJ9ZB, Kimo/KH7U,
Antoinette/KI6TVS, Jon/KL2A, Don/N1DG, Paul/N4PN, Tom/N4XP, Jeff/N6GQ,
John/N7CQQ, Dave/WB4JTT, Charlie/W6KK, Bruce/W6OSP, Art/WA7NB, Janet/W8CAA,
Joe/W8GEX, Byron/WA8NJR and Vrata/OK1KT. Off site support is being provided
by Don/AA1V, Dan/W5DNT and Paul/W6XA. Travel to Midway is only allowed by
chartered aircraft. Because of the size of the aircraft, the team is
presented with unique challenges. As such, the aircraft will only be able
to carry the team requiring the equipment to be shipped by boat some months
ahead. Adding to the high cost of transportation, daily fees and other
charges established by the USF&WLS makes this operation very expensive.
A Web site has been established and can be found at:
http://www.midway2009.com
Please support this endeavor by sending a donation. To make it easy to
donate you can contribute electronically using the Web site or if you
choose regular means you may do so. Instructions are given on the Web
site for either method. Updates will be published on the Web site as
they become available..... Tom/N4XP & Dave/WB4JTT (Co Leaders for Midway
Island 2009)"

at the Maui Amateur Radio Club (MARC) this past week that the extremely
rare Kalawao County will be activaed on 40 and 20 meters, March 30-31st.
MARC member, Jayson Kohama, WH6BXK, is expected to work there on those
particular days. After he gets off work each day, he plans to be on HF
making as many contacts as possible. His station, WH6BXK, will be on the
air each day after 1800 local (6:00 pm or 0400z). He will be on 7188 kHz
and 14335 kHz. Kalwao County is one of the rarest USA counties. It is
the 2nd smallest county and the poorest in the USA. It is located on the
Kalaupapa peninsula, on the island of Molokai. It is the old Hawaiian
leper colony. Because it was a leper colony, it was totally isolated
from the rest of the islands and had its own separate county government,
which was administered by the state. Hams must have special permission
to go there and operate. Thus it is extremely rare for any ham signals
to ever radiate from Kalawao.

XR1, CHILE. Members of the Radio Club La Portada will be active as XR1A
during the CQWW WPX SSB Contest (March 28-29th) as a Multi-? entry. QSL
via XQ1IDM.

XU, CAMBODIA. Retu, OH4MDY, will once again be active as XU7MDY from
Sihanoukville between April 9-21st. Activity will be on the HF bands
80-10 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK31. QSL only direct to XU7MDY
address on QRZ.com.

ZF2, CAYMAN ISLAND (Satellites, Grids, HF and Contesting). Adrian, AA5UK,
will be operating as ZF2AE from Grand Cayman and ZF2AE/ZF8 from Little
Cayman between March 25th and April 8th. Current plans are to operate
holiday style on AO-51, SO-50, VO-52 and FO-29 satellites. He plans to
activate EK99hi from March 25-28th, EK99xp and EK99wp from March 28th
through April 3rd (he plans to operate HF only during part of CQ WPX SSB
Contest and the rest of his stay on Little Cayman, 40-10m) and EK99kh
from April 3-8th. Most activity will be in the afternoons and evenings.
QSL direct with SAE/SASE, Bureau, LoTW or eQSL.

ZF2, CAYMAN ISLAND. Garry/K9WZB and XYL Sharon/K7WZB will be operating
from Cayman Island as ZF2ZB between April 21st and May 6th. Activity
will be on all bands 160-6 meters, using CW, SSB, RTTY and PSK31. They
will be monitoring 6 meters most of the time for openings to U.S. and
Europe. QSL direct only via K9WZB.

ZL7T QRT. Lee, ZL2AL, reports that the multi-national team that activated
Chatham Island in the South Pacific as ZL7T between March 5-10th, averaged
about 2,200 QSOs a day with three radios for 5 days with over 11,000 QSOs
in the log. The final logs have been uploaded to the Web site. Please QSL
direct via Lee, ZL2AL: 87 Auckland Road, Greenmeadows, Napier 4112, NEW
ZEALAND. For a direct response, you must enclose a self-addressed envelope
(SAE) and at least 2 USDs or 1 IRC to cover the return postage, otherwise
they will respond via the Bureau system. They will also reply to QSLs sent
to them via the ZL Bureau, and they will upload their logs to the "Logbook
of The World" (LoTW) by September this year.
