4M9, VENEZUELA (Update/Rare District). Just a reminder that a group of
YVs and YYs will be active as 4M9YY between October 7-12th from the
very rare YV9 calling district and Grid Locator FJ67gv. Jose (Joe),
YV5LIX, states, "This is the first time in the last 13 years that any
serious effort is made to give both, the 4M9 prefix and the FJ67 grid,
to the rest of the world." Operators a

4M9YY will be active around the clock on all HF bands and modes (10, 12,
15, 17 ,20 ,30 ,40 ,80 and 160 meters, SSB/CW/RTTY/PSK31/PSK63) as well
as on Satellite, 70 cm, 2 meters and 6 meters. Operations will be from
San Fernardo de Apure which is located some 300 Km south of Caracas very
near to the Brazilian and Colombian borders. This will be a great
opportunity for hams in these countries to try a direct QSO on 2 meters
and 70 centimeters with Venezuela. Also, if propagation allows and since
this is the correct season of the year, hams in the southern portion of
the continent, especially in Argentina and Uruguay, will experience some
TEP openings on 6 and 2 meters. For satellite operators, 4M9YY will be
a good catch to work the rare FJ67 Grid Locator. For more information

4V200, HAITI. Operators Hans/DL7CM, Sid/DM2AYO, Manfred/DK1BT and
Juergen/DL7UFN will be active from here between January 28th and February
15th. The German team will be using the special callsign 4V200YH (Four
Victor 200 Years of Haiti). Activity will be on 160-6 meters on CW, SSB,
RTTY, PSK and SSTV. They plan to have 3 stations on the air (two on the
air around the clock with AMPs). Antennas will be: 27m GP, 3 element
band beam, HF9V and a 4 element for 6 meters. QSL via DL7CM. A Web page

4W3, TIMOR LESTE. Peter, 4W3CW, is expected to be active in this year's
CQWW CW Contest as a Single-Op/Low Power entry. QSL via the address on

5U, NIGER. Fred, G4BWP (ex-XT2WP), will be active as 5U7WP some days
before and after the next CQWW CW Contest (November 29-30th). Activity
will be on the HF bands and mainly on CW. During the contest, Fred will
sign 5U7A or 5U5A (the callsign has not been issued to date). QSL via
G4BWP, direct or via the bureau.

5Z, KENYA. Mirko, DJ1AA, is expected to be active from Nairobi now
through October 23rd. He will sign 5Z4/DJ1AA (or possibly 5Z4**; still
waiting for license). He also plans to be active in the German WAG Contest
(October 18-19th). Activity will be on all HF bands. QSL via DJ1AA (DARC
bureau).

6Y, JAMAICA. Ken, K2KW, will be active as 6Y0A in the CQ World Wide DX
CW Contest (November 29-30th) as a Single-Op/Single Band (160m)/QRP
entry. QSL via WA4WTG. He will also be active before the contest on
160 meters.

9H, MALTA (C5 Cancelled!). Holger/DL5XAT and Matthias/DL5OB have cancelled
their C5 (The Gambia) operation scheduled for October 21st to November
2nd. They will now be active from Gozo Island (EU-023) from October
20-30th. Activity should include the CQ World Wide DX SSB Contest (October
25-26th). Contest callsign was not mentioned. However, outside of the
contest look for 9H3SB (DL5XAT) and 9H3UD (DL5OB). QSL via the bureau
or direct via home callsign.

9Y4, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO (Update/Contest Change). Ben, DL6FBL, reports
that Andy, 9Y4/DL4MEH, has received his native callsign, 9Y4ZC. Instead
of 9Y4TBG, this callsign will now be used in future contests. So look
for Ben to be active as 9Y4ZC (not 9Y4TBG) in the CQWW SSB Contest. QSL

AH2, GUAM. Members of the Guam Contest Club will be on the air during
the CQ WW DX SSB Contest SSB at the end of this month. Look for operators
JI3ERV/NH2C, JR7OMD/WI3O, JP1JFG/N2IU, JG3RPL/N1BJ, JH7QXJ, JR8VSE/NH2N
and JE8KKX/AH2K to activate AH2R from Guam Island (KH2, Zone 27, IOTA
OC-26) as a Multi-Op/2TX entry. QSL via JH7QXJ (Direct or JA bureau,
NOT the KH2 bureau).

BQ9P, PRATAS ISLAND (Update). As this was being typed, operators BV4FH,
BV3FG, BV3BW, DL3DXX, DK7YY, JI6KVR, ZL4PO, OE1WHC and N2OO are gathering
in Taipei and expect to be on Pratas Island around noontime (1200 local
time) October 7th. Paul, BV4FH, states they should have 5-6 hours before
dark (sunset is 1820 local time) to set up antenna(s). They will first
set up the low band antenna (depending the location difficulty). They will
be aided by 3-4 soldiers to help put up the V80. The team hopes to set up
at least 1 yagi before dark (one of the C3S for 10/15/20m) and if the
moonlight is good, they will be able to set up the second yagi after
dinner and rest. Remember activity will last until 0100z, October 16th.
Operations will be on 160-6 meters including the WARC bands on CW/SSB/
RTTY/SSTV/PSK31. Frequncies will be in most DX windows (+/- QRM). Pilot
stations: Floyd/N5FG (Eastern USA) and Lee/ZL2AL (ZL/VK). QSL via KU9C.

CO8, CUBA. Operators Eduardo/CO8LY, Juan/CO8TW and possibly others will
activate station CO8LY in the next CQWW SSB Contest as Multi-Op/Two

CU2, AZORES. Ingo, DH5ST, will be on holiday from Sao Miguel, Azores
(EU-003), between November 9-23rd. He will sign CU2/DH5ST/p and be active
80-10 meters CW/SSB. QSL via address on QRZ.com.

DXPEDITION WINNER IS ANNOUNCED! The ARRL Letter reports that Daniel
Bradke, W2AU, a 14 year old from Niskayuna, New York, will operate as
part of the VP5X Contest Group during the CQ World-Wide CW Contest
(November 29-30th). Bradke was the winner of a competition sponsored
by the VP5X Contest Group headed by David Kopacz, KY1V. According to
the VP5X Contest Group's Web site, ""Daniel's essay, operating skills
and enthusiasm have moved our contest team to select him to be our first
annual VP5X Young Ham Team Member." Daniel, an Extra Class license holder,
will receive an all expenses paid trip to Turks and Caicos Island (VP5)

GP0, GUERNSEY ISLAND. The St. Helens Radio Club will again be active from
Guernsey Island (IOTA EU-114) as GP0STH (GP0 ST. Helens). Operators
Ron/G4DIY and Lee/G0DBE expect to be active from 1100z Thursday, October
9th, through Monday the 13th. Activity will be on 40/30/20/17/15/12/10
meters CW/SSB on the usual DXpedition frequencies. QSL via G4DIY direct
or by the Bureau. PLEASE Note: If you are in the bureau, you will
automatically be sent a QSL for each contact. They don't require your
QSL card (Thanks). If you have to go direct, they will reply direct as
long as return postage is received.

HK0, SAN ANDRES ISLAND (Update). Seven members of the Florida DXPedition
Group will be on San Andres Island October 20-28th. They will be active
as a Multi-Two entry in the CQWW Contest. The contest callsign has been
put on hold. Orginally it was announced to be 5J0J, but it looks to be
5J0X now. They hope to receive a copy of the license soon. Stay tuned.
Operators outside of the contest will be active as HK0/N2WB, HK0/KR4DA,
HK0/W9AAZ, HK0/K4QD, HK0/N1WON, HK0/W1LR and HK0/W4WX. The team will be
on all bands (160-6 meters) and on most modes (CW, RTTY, PSK-31, HELL,

EU-057. Detlev, DL1RTW, will be active as DL1RTW/p from Ruegen Island,
October 11-16th. Activity will be holiday-style, 40/30/20

EU-070. Six operators from the Radio Club of Nancy (F6KIM) will be
active from October 22-27th, from Porquerolles Island using
the callsign TM5CRO. The island is located in the JN32 Grid
Square. Activity will be on 160m-23cm expect 6m (not allowed)
and 432 MHz. WSJT activities are also planned. VHF/SHF Skeds

EU-125. Peter, DL2MX, will be active as OZ/DL2MX from Mando Island

NA-062. Mark, KG8DP, trustee/member of the Rusty Zipper HF & DX
Contest Club (NA8KD), informs OPDX that he will be active as
NA8KD from Grassey Key, October 13-19th. He will be a fixed
station there, but he will be mobile when heading south to

KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. Look for Takashi, JF1MIA, to be active as KH0A during

LOTW A HIT! The ARRL Letter reports this week that the "Logbook of the
World" (LoTW), the League's new QSL-cardless awards and contact credit
system, has proven to be a huge hit with the amateur community. Since
opening September 15th, LoTW has acquired more than 2200 registered
participants. Another 2400 or so applications are pending, and the QSO
database of 4900 uploaded logs had topped 8 million contacts at week's

LX, LUXEMBOURG. Operator Philippe, LX2AJ, will be active as LX7I in the

MM0, SCOTLAND. Leo, W3LEO, informs OPDX that he will once again be active
from Portpatrick in southwest Scotland from about October 13th to November
15th. His callsign will be MM0LEO, and he plans to be in the CQWW SSB
Contest. He will use an Icom 706 (w/100 watts) using the following
antennas: R-5 vertical [10/12/15/17/20 meters] and a 40-meter dipole
[in inverted-V, semi-delta configuration]. QSL via W3LEO, CBA or bureau.
He provides the following reference numbers: Worked All Britain [WAB]

QSL AH2J to JR1VAY through the JARL Bureau. Operator was Aki. He was
active over the past week/weekend during the Oceania DX SSB Contest,
TARA PSK, CA QSO Party, RSGB21/28 etc... from GUAM.

Tom, G0PSE, reports that QSOs from the recent GB0SM (IOTA EU-011)
September 20-27th operation have been added to the main log. The log

Fran, EA7FTR, informs OPDX that he is now the QSL Manager for Francisco
Jose Colindres, HR1FJC, a DXer from Honduras. He states that he has the
complete log, and anyone who needs to confirm a HR1FJC QSO can send a
card to EA7FTR: Francisco Lianez Suero, Asturias 23, 21110, Huelva,
SPAIN. He is also the QSL Manager for CN8YZ and HR2JGG.

Scott, K7ZO, QSL Manager for NK7U, has been processing cards for Joe
that were received via the bureau for about the last 6 months. In the
pile were around 40 cards for TA0/NK7U for activity on August 9, 2002.
This operation was a PIRATE/SLIM. There were also a handful of cards
for TA9/NN7E that were QSLed via NK7U for November 22, 2002. This
operation may or may not be a PIRATE, but even if it is a good one
NK7U is not the QSL Manager. Scott will return all cards via the
bureau.

Jeff, K8ND, informs OPDX that he spoke with Sid, NH7C, at Signal Point
on Curacao, and he told him that the proper QSL route for the PJ2P
operation in the CQWW RTTY Contest this past weekend is KQ3F. They
operated in the M/S Low Power category. Sid will be on the island and
operating as PJ2/NH7C through October 6th.

ZW8M QSLS. Moreira, CT1AHU, reports that the first batch of direct
cards for ZW8M Mexiana Island (IOTA SA-042; DIB-69, May 21-25th, 2003)
operation were sent out September 30th. Direct QSL will now be processed
as they are received by the QSL Manager CS1GDX.

SPECIAL EVENT. Pi, K1RV, informs OPDX that there will be an upcoming
operation onboard the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" during their
annual "Turn-around Cruise" on October 11th. They have been trying for
several years to get onboard and operate a HF station. Look for them
to operate as N1S from 1200-1800z on October 11th. The USS Constitution
is the oldest commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy and is permanently
berthed at the Old Boston Navy Shipyard. Each year they turn her around
to allow for weathering. They also mention that they will have another
station, N1B, operating on the pier of the shipyard. QSL manager for both
of these stations is W1QWT. There will be three other U.S. Naval vessels
on the air with them. Look for USS Caisson Young (WW2DD), USS Chaffee
(callsign not provided) and USS Salem (K1USN). Operations will center
around 7260, 14260, 18160 and 14039 kHz. Here is a Web link with

SPECIAL EVENT. Look for special event station, LZ100JVA (Lima Zulu 100
John Vincent Atanasoff), to operate as of October 1st to commemorate the
100th anniversary of the birth of John Vincent Atanasoff, the father of
the electronic computer. In the early forties, together with his assistant
Clifford Berry, John V. Atanasoff created the ABC (Atanasoff Berry
Computer) in a laboratory in Iowa State University. Some of the computer
basics he invented are still used in modern computers. J.V.A. was born
on October 4th, 1903. His father was an immigrant from Bulgaria. A Web

SPECIAL EVENT. Look for special event station, EN750WKD, to be activated
by club station, UT7WZA, to celebrate the 750th anniversary of Prince
Danylo Halytskyi's coronation (the founder of Lviv City), between October
23rd and November 3rd. QSL via UT7WZ either direct (Miroslav Lupiy,

TI8, COSTA RICA. Operators Carlos/TI2KAC, Eddie/K4UN, Robert/W4BD,
Will/K4WPM, Dennis/K4ZJ, N5VI and Keith/W4KTR will be active as TI8M
in the CQ World Wide DX SSB Contest (October 25-26th) as a Multi/2
entry. QSL via W4BD, by the bureau or w/SASE direct. Look for W4BD/TI8
and K4UN/TI8 before and after the contest. Activity will be on 160-10
meters. QSL via their home callsigns.

UV7, UKRAINE. Look for station UV7M to be active in both CW/SSB CQWW
DX Contest as a Multi-Op/All Band entry. Operators for the CW Contest
will be: Anatol/UY5LO, Serge/US8MX, Vlad/UX3MX and US5MTJ. Operators
for the SSB Contest will be: Valery/UT1ML and Vitaly/US5MTJ. QSL is OK
and only via bureau to Vitaly/US5MTJ.

VK9X, CHRISTMAS ISLAND (Also VK9C). Operators Gerhard/DJ5IW, Thomas/DL2RMC,
Hartmut/DM5TI and Andree/DL8LAS are now active from Christmas Island
(OC-002) as VK9XW until October 11th (before moving to Cocos-Keeling Island
as VK9CD between October 11-23rd). Activity will be on all modes, 160
through 6 meters with a focus on the lower and the WARC bands, including
operations on AO-40. They will have 3 stations on the air. Over the past
weekend, they were active on 30/20/15m (Mixed CW/SSB/RTTY). QSL VK9XW via

XV, VIETNAM. Lee, N5PO, informs OPDX that he plans to operate from Vietnam
as XV2PO, November 25th to December 3rd. Activity will be on 40-10 meters
(no WARC bands), CW ONLY. He will operate in the CQWW CW Contest as a
Single-Op/All Band entry. His plans are to operate from the Kimdo Hotel
in downtown Ho Chi Minh City. QSL via N5PO direct or via the Bureau.

XZ7, MYANMAR. The German team (mentioned in OPDX.619) is now active as
XZ7A unitl October 17th. Bernd, DF3CB, who has E-mail contact with them,
states "the team arrived very well. Just the stopover in Bangkok was a
little too long. The employees of Myanmar Travel and Tours met them at
the airport. Therefore entry including all the equipment was no problem.
Nothing got lost this time!" The entire roof is covered with antennas now.
The hotel crew gave them a lot of support. The team reports that receiving
on 80m is difficult (and worse on 160m). Some interesting pictures are

Activity over the past weekend covered 80-10 meters (including 30/17
meters) mainly on CW with some RTTY and SSB. QSL via DL7DF. Pilot
stations a Floyd/N5FG and Bernd/DF3CB.

ZL, NEW ZEALAND (Also, KH6). Roy, W6UKX, will operate as ZL/W6UKX from
October 16th through November 6, and as W6UKX/KH6 from Hawaii a few days
prior and after these dates. Operations will be SSB and CW, mostly 20
and 17 meters; with conditions permitting also 15-10 meters. QSL to
his home callsign.

ZL4, NEW ZEALAND (IOTA Op). Chris, GM3WOJ, will be active as ZL1CT/4
from Stewart Island (OC-203), January 11-16th. Activity will be on 40
and 20 meters CW/SSB using only 400 watts to verticals. QSL via N3SL.

ZM8, KERMADEC ISLANDS. Ron, ZL1AMO, informs/reminds OPDX readers that
Jacky, ZL3CW, will be leaving for Kermadec on October 7th. He should be
active about October 10-18th from Raoul Island. This is not a DXpedition.
Jacky will be there doing some maintenance on the communication gear
(repeaters etc) for the Department of Conservation. He will be active
as work permits. QSL this operation, ZM8CW, to Ron, ZL1AMO.

1) Dial Number. 2) Wait for first ring (the second ring should be a false
ring from the fax/data switch box) and then dial four quick ones ("1111").
(NOTE: Some FAX machines that send single "BEEPS" every second will not
have to do this step.) 3) The phone will pick up and after the "BEEP"
leave your voice message or FAX.
