Getting the contact!

I'm not a super dx'er...just barely a little pistol. But does it really take
much self education to know it's a bad practice to tune up on the dx's
frequency or to tx there when he's listening up? How would you know? Well,
if you don't hear anyone else calling the dx there must be a reason why and
it's likely because he's "listening up"...sigh. Makes it that much more
difficult.

John that's true. But there may be another reason.

Today I tuned my amplifier on 15 meters. Before tuning I listened on
frequency for almost 15 minutes and heard nothing, nada, Zippo!!

Five seconds of touching up the presets on the amplifier then off the
air. Immediate comment that the frequency 'is busy'.

Propagation can be funny. I listened on frequency for another 20 minutes
and still heard nothing, nada, zippo!

Just because you hear someone on frequency does not mean that everyone
can hear what you hear.

You'd be surprised how often I've heard *really rare* DX calling CQ
without responses.[0] IMHO if the DX wants people to call up, he needs
to SAY SO!

[0] for example... there was a YI9ZF QSL waiting in my mailbox when I
got home from vacation today. Yep, he was CQing on 17m without response.

This is just because they are stuck in front of their packet and web
clusters waiting the Dx to show up on the screen ;-)

In other words, I was being a lid because I didn't spot him? ;-) HI!

(that has to be one of the fastest QSLs I've ever received - even most W
stations don't QSL that fast. Kudos to SM1TDE!)

Hi Doug, I agree with that. They should say so and also give out there call
often also. But I don't think it's good practice to tune up over anyone,
full blast at that. And it's just the awareness that they might be listening
up (though as you say, there might just not be much/any activity yet) that
should get us to listen for a quick minute other than jumping right in. But
then again, maybe that's how you get them b4 the masses chime in...oh well,
food for thought...
