WHY ARE KP1 AND KP5 NOT ON THE AIR?? DXer Carl Henson, WB4ZNH, provides
the following information to help get KP1/KP5 back on the air:
"Many DX groups in the USA have been trying unsuccessfully for about
12 years to receive permission to activate KP1, Desecheo Island and
KP5, Navassa Island. My group has been working hard on this problem
for several years now. We keep reaching a dead end. It has now become
more important that someone go, regardless of who. Please non-USA Hams
write to:
The President, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500

and US Hams please write, E-mail, and phone your Congressman and Senator
and urge them to bring pressure to bear on the Department of Interior
to allow an operation from both of these DX locations. One third of
the US Senators and all of the US Representatives are up for reelection
this year, not to mention the President and Vice President. If you would
like to go to one of these islands, E-mail me and I will give you the
information for application and how to cause the most work for the
Department of the Interior...... 73, Carl

P.S. Oh, I forgot, Fish and Wildlife has to comply with 50cfr2545,
so please include the following download information."

(ARRL HQ station) during the IARU Contest. They will be operating on all
bands from 160-10 meters on both CW and SSB. They will be operating from
the stations of K2LE and W2AX in Southern VT, so this should be a good

QSOs with NU1AW will also count towards the "Order of Boiled Owls 50th
Anniversay Award." See CQ magazine or their Web page for full details
at: http://reallybig/obo

OA9, PERU. Look for Bonnie, KQ6XA, to be active as OA9/KQ6XA from now
through August 25th from the Andes mountains in the Amazonas area of Peru.
The ham radio operation is in conjunction with an international expedition
of cave scientists (speleologists) to survey and map the deepest previously
unexplored vertical caves in the southern hemisphere. In addition to the
regular HFpack schedule at 1630z and 2230zC on 18157.5 kHz, the expedition
will use the following schedule:
Daily at 0030z on 18157.5 kHz USB
Daily at 0030z on 18158.2 kHz CW
Daily at 0100z on 7087.5 LSB
Daily at 0100z on 7087.0 kHz CW
QSY frequency for CW will be 18095.0 kHz; 21437.5 kHz USB as needed;
10117.5 kHz CW as needed.
The Cave Expedition Peru 2004 will operate on HF using a 20W transmitter
and battery power charged by solar. Transmitting time will be somewhat
limited. To conserve battery power during cloudy days, OA9/KQ6XA will
not call CQ, but instead will just listen for calls on schedule and
respond to them directly. Radio operators around the world are invited
to QSO with OA9/KQ6XA; please call at the above scheduled times and
frequencies on SSB or CW. Listen for response in CW or SSB. QSL via
KQ6XA by e-QSL.

OE, AUSTRIA. Berkin, TA3J, will operate from different locations in
Austria, and sign OE(?)/TA3J between July 21-23rd. Look for activity on
160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, 6 and 2 meters (including the WARC bands), on
SSB and FM. QSL via his home callsign, direct (only SASE and 1 IRC, no

OH0, ALAND ISLANDS. Operators OH1JT, OH3WW, OH4JFN and OH5DX will be
active as OH0Z during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 24-25th) as a Multi-Op
entry. QSL via OH5DX (ex-OH1EH).

OH0 & OJ0, ALAND ISLANDS AND MARKET REEF (AND PARTY @ SEA). This press
release was sent out early last week by Jarmo, OH2BN, for Martti, OH2BH.
However, activity will be coming to an end by the time you read this
(expected Monday) in spite of a delay in landing on OJ0 due to bad weather.
Martti, OH2BH, stated that the landing on Market Reef was under very
difficult conditions. Getting all the team members and their equipment
onto the reef using a dinghy took some three hours. OPDX felt that the
earlier press release was interesting and should be published anyway.
The following is from Martti, OH2BH:

"It was early July, thirty-five years ago when a party was heading to
Market Reef aboard a large sailing yacht to put OJ0DX on the air for
a first major activity from that barren rock, located at open sea
between Finland and Sweden, west of Aland Islands (60º 05' 45" North &
19º 54' 40" East). Lars, OH0RJ, one of the members of the original
party, has now invited the original team with their friends to share
the spirit of the initial discovery of Market Reef, to sail again
toward the open sea and find the low lying reef. But now more in style.
The 160 ft. schooner Linden (http://www.linden.aland.fi), a replica of
the ocean-going ships used 100 years ago, will set sail on Tuesday,
June 29 and journey to Market Reef. The callsigns at sea will be
OH0S/M and OJ0J/MM and a Zodiac landing can be expected, depending on
the seas, during the nightless night of these northern latitudes, just
into the next day UTC. Playing on board will be the Seven Seas DX
Orchestra, featuring a piece entitled "Untuned Guitars", specially
composed for this outing. The total party of thirty (30) includes:
OH0NA (original OJ0MA), OH1XX, OH0RJ, OH0XX, OH1MA, OH1NM, OH1NOR,
OH1RX, OH1TV, OH1TX, OH2BAA, OH2BAD, OH2BC, OH2BR, OH2KH, OH2MM, OH2PM,
OH2QV, OH2TA, OH2WC, OH3UU, OH4NS, OH5NE, OH5NQ, ES1AR and OH2BH & OH2KK,
the initial discoverers of Market Reef. A tribute will be paid to those
early members of the OJ0DX team - OH1NK, OH1SY and OH0NI - who are no
longer sailing these waters. All Silent Keys. While Aland Islands are
celebrating this year the 20th anniversary of the first release of
their own postal stamps
each QSL request relating to OH0S and OJ0J will be answered from Aland
Islands, using current OH0 stamps. QSL address: Lars Nikko, OH0RJ,
Matrosgatan 5L, 22100 Mariehamn, Aland Islands, Finland."

OJ0, MARKET REEF. Seppo, OH1VR/OJ0VR, is leading an international team
to Market Reef for the IARU Contest and will be active as OJ0U during
the contest. Team members include: OH2KI/Jorma, OJ0RJ/Lasse, KX7M/Denny,
W6NV/Oliver and DL8YHR/Frank. Antenna work and initial operations are
scheduled to begin on July 8th. Home callsigns signing portable OJ0 may
be used before the contest. DL8YHR will activate VHF bands.

OK, CZECH REPUBLIC. Berkin, TA3J, will operate from different locations
in the Czech Republic, and sign OK(?)/TA3J between July 23-25th. Look for
activity on 160, 80, 40, 20, 15, 10, 6 and 2 meters (including the WARC
bands), on SSB and FM. QSL via his home callsign, direct (only SASE and
1 IRC, no green stamps please) or by the bureau. SWL QSL cards are OK.

QSL INFO AND NEWS..........................
QSL Manager Update: June 2004
GM3WOJ, GM4YXI, 9M2/GM4YXI, GS2MP, ZL1CT and ZL1V via N3SL
GM4AFF, GM7V and GZ7V via M0CMK

QSLs for the CT9P and CT9X operations will not be printed until after
the trip is complete. The QSL Manager for both callsigns is Kim Larson,
daughter of N3SL, via N3SL's CBA. QSL direct with SASE or SAE and
IRC/USD. Bureau cards are OK, but are shipped out only quarterly. The
logs will also be uploaded into the LoTW by N3SL as soon as they are
received.

QSL HK3JJH/0A direct only to HK3JJH. Petro, HK3JJH, was active over
the past weekend from NA-132 (Bajo Nuevo and Serranilla Bank Cays).
Remember, this operation will only count for DXCC as San Andres.

S79, SEYCHELLES. Look for Igor, RN3OA, to be active as S79OA from the
Island of Mahe (AF-024), August 16-31st. He may also activate the Island
of Alphonse (AF-033).

SILENT KEY. The following was taken from the DX-List E-Mail Reflector:
"One of the best-known names in cinematic as well as Amateur Radio circles,
actor Marlon Brando, died in Los Angeles July 1 at age 80. Known to hams
worldwide as KE6PZH and FO5GJ, Brando is listed on the FCC database as
Martin Brandeaux. He was on the air occasionally through the years with
his FO5 callsign from his private island in French Polynesia. In an
interview with Larry King on CNN in 1994, Brando confirmed his continued
interest in Amateur Radio. In response to a caller's question, he said ham
radio provided him with the opportunity to just be himself. The iconoclastic
actor was best known for his roles as Stanley Kowalski in 'A Streetcar
Named Desire,' a dockworker in 'On the Waterfront,' and Vito Corleone in
'The Godfather.' He was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won twice."

SJ9WL AND LG5LG, MOROKULIEN STATION (Update/Clarification/Correction).
Last week OPDX was misinformed about the station at Morokulien and thanks
to Osten, SM5DQC, a clarification/correction was provided. It seems that
Morokulien is not a republic as mentioned last week (MOROKULEN PEACE
REPUBLIC). However, there is a peace monument there; it was named in a
sort of show radio-program in the fifties -- "moro" in Norwegian means
fun and "kul" in Swedish also means fun. The ARIM (Amateur Radio In
Morokulien) is an association which maintains and runs the amateur radio
station in Morokulien. According to their Web page, ARIM has a management
of 3 Swedish and 3 Norwegian radio amateurs. The main task of ARIM is to
provide courses that give handicapped people radio amateur lisenses. The
radio shack can be rented by worldwide radio amateurs, and it is very
popular because of its very attractive callsigns, the Norwegian LG5LG
and the Swedish SJ9WL. The location of the amateur station is also unique,
because this is probably the only amateur station worldwide which is
operating from the borderline between two countries. The shack is made
useable for handicapped people. The income from rental activities are
used to help Norwegian and Swedish handicapped to get amateur lisense.
The QSL Manager is John, SM5DJZ, for both callsigns. LG5LG will count
as Norway and SJ9WL will count as Sweden towards DXCC. Please visit their
interesting Web site (with pictures and history) at:
http://www.east.no/priv/la7tia/arim/

TX/C, CHESTERFIELD ISLAND. Chris, DL5NAM, informs OPDX and the Northern
Ohio DX Association (NODXA) that with the great access of their last
DXpedition (to the Sudan as ST0RY), the team has annnounced their next
project will be to activate Chesterfield Island in October of this year.
Activity will be on all bands 160-6 meters, CW, SSB and RTTY. He states
that the flight tickets and vessel are booked; callsign is in hand. The
operators mentioned a Chris/DL5NAM, Jan/DJ8NK, Hawa/DK9KX, Dieter/DJ9ON,
Dieter/DL3KDV and Heye/DJ9RR. They are still looking for one more operator.
This DXpedition will not be cheap (est. budget is 45,000-50,000 USD), so
they are looking for funds. For any questions, please feel free to contact
Chris, DL5NAM, at:

V26, ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA. An early announcement reports that a number of
operators (to be announced) will be active as V26DX during the CQ WW DX
SSB Contest (October 30-31st) as a Multi-?/Low Power entry. QSL via KU9C.

VK9L, LORD HOWE ISLAND (News Release Update #2). Bill Horner, VK4FW, sent
OPDX the following release on the upcoming operation to Lord Howe Island
to take place October 9-23rd: "All accommodation is finalized along with
plane flights. We arrive on October 9th at approx 14.45 local time. By
the time we get checked in and gather all the equipment, it will be getting
close to darkness; however, we hope to have one station on air very quickly
followed soon after by a second. The rest will be installed when daylight
breaks.
Because of severe weight restrictions we have to boat freight most of
the equipment over next month. DONATIONS to help offset this cost would
gladly be appreciated and can be sent direct to Oceania Amateur Radio Dx
Group Inc, PO Box 513, Nambour, 4560, Australia.
The operators that are absolute confirmed starters a

WHY ARE KP1 AND KP5 NOT ON THE AIR?? DXer Carl Henson, WB4ZNH, provides
the following information to help get KP1/KP5 back on the air:
If you would
like to go to one of these islands, E-mail me and I will give you the
information for application and how to cause the most work for the
Department of the Interior...... 73, Carl

OK, so you want hams to be a large pain in the rear for the government agency
that would ultimately have to approve any operation here? This hardly seems
like the way to win friends....
