Amateur Radio now officially DEAD at Radio Shack
- it looks like amateur radio is now officially dead at Radio Shack
- the company no longer lists any transceivers, and appears to have dropped its only HT from the on-line catalog - there are still some accessories for sale, but all seem to be third-party - it looks like the sell-off (which began several years ago) is now complete: no HTs, no mobile VHF/HF units, and no more amateur radios - but you can get your NASCAR scanner, belt accessories and headphones! (and a cellphone and satellite TV service) whoo hoo! :P |
Hmmm.
They should take the word "Radio" out of the name of the stores. The store name should be "Shack." Sounds appropriate to me. You can read about the history of RadioShack here -

I would miss the resistors, capacitors, relays and other misc electronic parts they sell. I hope that stays. By the way I still have an old original Radio Shack catalog before Tandy bought them out. 73 Dale, K9VUJ -- Dale J. Bloomington, Minnesota E-mail: |

Hi,
A few of the local rs stores here in raleigh nc are very good, many hams will work there during holiday season and one is managed by a current ham. The only turn off is I forget to stop at an atm so I can pay cash and not use any plastic so they can't track me ! I like http://mouser.com for most stuff, no min. order and FAST ship, and if I can wait, http://allcorp.com for misc cables and items. 73 gumby Radio Shack has parts that I cannot obtain without mail order or driving quite some miles. On the other hand, maybe they're simply cleaning out stock for the publication of their next catalog... Bob k5qwg The story given by emplyees here is that they have dropped all HAM band equipment and have no plans to get any more. Most of it was relabeled Japanese gear anyway, so why not go to HRO or one of the other mail order shops for it. I actually buy most of my equipment at hamfests. With six per year within an hour's drive, I get quite a good selection. I hang on to business cards from the displays in case I need something in between. It helps to keep the better dealers interested in the 'fests. Bob McConnell N2SPP |

I went in there the other day looking for caps, resistors, and an
IC555 for my oscillator. I was standing at the bins looking for the IC when the sales guy approached me. I asked him where they are hiding the IC's and he said he didn't know but could get me a great deal on a cell phone. I eventually found one and that is all I really need from rs |
