Running more than 4 watts on 27 MHz in the US has been illegal since CB became legal here - 1961 IIRC. I don't know what the rules are in Oz. It's always been illegal, but the amplifiers could be sold. All those "illegal for Class D Citizen Band use" in the Lafayette catalog on the CB page decades ago were being sold for CB use. And those and the more underground amplifiers is what brought about the FCC rule in the late seventies that put limits on amateur radio amplifiers. Previously it had been too easy to sell amplifiers that were clearly intended for CB (the giveaways were the low drive requirements and the frequency range that wasn't much beyond the limits of the CB band), but sold under the guise of "amateur radio amplifiers". The new rules of thirty years ago made all such amplifiers illegal. Nevertheless, they have nothing to do with boatanchors. They are made today, they likely don't use tubes, they are intended for CB and not amateur radio, and likely I'm likely forgetting other reasons. Michael VE2BVW |

Ten-Tec made an amplifier called the 405 for the Argonuat 505 and 509. It's solid state but due to it's age may qualify as a boat anchor. 5 watts in 50 or so out. Fairly rare due to the FCC rules, which BTW were dropped recently. Geoff. -- Geoffrey S.
