Might check and see which dual-banders allow you to select the band for each
"side". My Alinco DR-610 can do VHF/VHF, VHF/UHF, or UHF/UHF. The new DR-620 can do this, also. I believe the Icom IC-2720 will, also. This way, you'll get the advantages of TWO VHF radios in one. It seems to me that the more important issue is the remote head rather than single-band, and if that's the case he's almost certainly into dual-bander territory. The 8100 is a fantastic radio, one of the few that can do cross-band repeat, and it's small too. The reason I asked about a 2m with a remote head is because I rarely use 70cm. I am well aware that almost every dualband has a remote head. I am not sure why 2m radios aren't made this way. In any case, if I am going to get a dualbander, it's going to be a Kenwood TM-G707A. Fair enough. Though I have the 8100, I too don't use 70cm at all, and wonder why they don't make a single-band radio with a remote head. |
Another example of bum dope on the NG's. So newbies beware !!
