FRS Radioes question

Geez folks -- there is NO license fee or requirement for an FRS Radio --
URL:
http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/ind...home&id=family

There is a fee and license required for GMRS Radios -- URL:
http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/ind...general_mobile

Why does this thread re appear over and over again ??

I suggest you determine what kind of radio you have -- perhaps it is a
FRS/GMRS Dual Service Radio

In which case read the FCC URL above.

A telephone verbal is useless. The FCC official web site is the straight
word.

Joe says again. I did call the FCC before useing them. She
specifically stated the chnls 1-7 required the $75 dollar license!!!!

Actually, the license fee is $85 for 5 years. The fees went up from $80
to
$85 a month or two ago.

Well tnxfor that info. No way I was gonna use the FCC licensed chnls
anyway. I settled on chnl 12. works out pretty well. I had to
take it back to Radio Shack, as the "SCAN" function skipped all the
free (no license needed) chnls and did'nt know how to get it on a
no license chnl like 12. The girl figured out how to do it and
once I got one unit set up on 12, then the other girl did a scan
and it automatically locked onto unit 1 on chnls 12. I live
on a hill and was able to exceed the 7 mile limit ay about 5 miles
but the wife had to go upstairs on top floor of the big shopping
center to get a solid copy on me.

Simple enuff. The instructions nor the radioes show anything on them
regarding GMRS or FRS.

Sorry you had to go through all this. Your experiences are very common.
The FCC is to blame for permitting GMRS to share FRS frequencies and allow
type acceptance of these radios. Things should have been left the same,
only allowing production of 14 channel FRS radios. Big business has to
have its way and force these low quality radios on the public, and then
conveniently confuse the customer about licensing requirements and
realistic performance.

I bought 2 of these tiny little FRS radioes so could keep in touch
with wife when she takes her daily walks. I called the FCC
and asked them if any kind of license is required to use thses.
They said certain chnls do require FCC license which costs $75 for
a 1 year period. Chnls 1 thru 7 need this license also the
higher chnls I believe was 16 to 20 also require FCC license.
The others do not require any license or ID when used.
So I set both hers and mine to chnl 12 (frs free useage chnl).
These free chnls per docs have a range of up to 7 miles. The
FCC licensed chnls with same unit have a range up to 14 miles.
When my wife was trying to reach me from a shopping center about
10 miles away she did find a spot that worked. But next time
we tried I Could'nt hear her well only a sylable or 2.
She says after she tried 4 or 5 times, some one came up and
said this is the "POLICE" do you need help!!! How in the heck
does FCC get into the picture or better yet how does the FCC
even monitor these FRS chnls. I thought they only monitor 911.

Did it make you want to give your FRS a Botox facial? Try not to get any on
your echo mic.

No it made me go down to RadiShack and show one more time how to
"lock" it. Use the MENU key first and tab thru its various
offerings until you reachthe "lock" key. It was so tiny and
did'nt look like a lock key, just a black spot on the top of
the screen. So now I got it locked and alls well.
