Engineering submitted the specs and the Marketing Dept developed the
packaging...... Somehow, the Marketing folks seem to sleep well at night, anyway! The manual says 0.5 or 2W(selectable) from GMRS/FRS shared channel 1 to 7, 0.5W on 8-14 as a FRS radio and 15-22 GMRS only selectable between 0.5 and 2W. The package reads "2watt up to 5 miles" I got a copy of FCC certification sumbission for this radio and it reads: 478mW FRS 831mW GMRS How did the 831mW on certification submission turn into 2,000mW on manual and package? |

How did the 831mW on certification submission turn into 2,000mW on
manual and package? JerC- They lied! My guess is that if challenged in court, they might claim that the higher power was either a) The result of using the car battery to power the radio instead of its internal batteries, or b) The total power delivered by the batteries. The case for (a) is based on power output being greatly affected by DC voltage. A slight increase in voltage sometimes results in a higher percentage increase in output power. The case for (b) is based on FCC limits, which would likely be exceeded by (a). I doubt that Walmart cares, but you could use this information to justify a refund after their normal return period has expired. 73, Fred, K4DII |

The manufacturer might be using the old audio-amplifier trick of listing the total power consumed by the radio (output + losses/overhead) on the packaging, maybe? If they didn't say "2,000 mW RF power out" then they might not be actually lying... just coming to within a split red fiber-optic of doing so. -- Dave Platt AE6EO Hosting the Jade Warrior home page: http://www.radagast.org/jade-warrior I do _not_ wish to receive unsolicited commercial email, and I will boycott any company which has the gall to send me such ads! |
