The radio/battery is 21 years old. You figure it out.... grin

Is the AA cell the same volts as the existing battery?


Yes.

Does the risk of the modification outweigh the rewards?


No risk. I've spent 35+ years working on far more sophisticated gear
than this....

What's gonna happen when you install the cell backwards?


Isn't going to happen.


Before you answer and tell us how smart/careful you are
...nobody ever said, "hey, I think I'll
put this in backwards..."
As I recall, there ain't much room in there.
