Default Kenwood AT-250 with Non-Kenwood Radios?

Has anyone successfully used a Kenwood AT-250 automatic antenna tuner
with a non-Kenwood radio?

Is it simply a matter of grounding pin 3 on the ACC jack, reducing
output to 50 watts, and hitting the "Tune" button? What about the
pin 8 connection? What exactly is that?
