Default Help with mfj 1270B

Hi all.

I just picked up a couple of MFJ 1270B's. I want to be able to simple
send anything recieved on the serial port via radio to the other one
and then have it send it to my PC. Thats it.

So I fired them up with a terminal software connected to each one. I
then typed TRANS as I thought this was what I needed. Ok I type in
some charecters on on. It waits a few seconds after I type and then
the unit transmits the data.

The DCD light comes on over at the second unit but nothing shows up on
the terminal screen.

However if I leave it in the default mode which I think is called
CONVERSATION MODE I get the line

cmd:NOCALLCQ UI R:THIIS IS WHAT I TYPED

so I know it is transmitting it.

What am I missing. Are these units not capable of doing this? I need
the recieveing unit to be able to transmitt back so do I have to
switch modes etc?

MAybe these units are too old to do what I want..
Any help appreciated...

Well Peter, your first problem is transmitting without putting your
legal call sign into both units.

_After_ putting your valid call into both units, try putting them into
transparent mode.

Thanks Bob. First off I am not a liceance ham. I am using the radio's
and tnc's on a private network but I can make up a call sign.

Secondly I have tried it in TRANS mode. If I put the reciving unit in
trans mode, nothing is sent to the computer it is connected to. If I
leave it in command mode, then it sends the data to the computer...

Also I am interested to know if in trans mode, does it use AX25 to
send the data or does it simply send the data without any headers,
flags and crc? The reason I ask is I have a couple of MX614 modem
chips sending fsk stuff but I don't use the ax25 protocol. Will the
MFJ's be able to recieve it?

Regards, Peter
