National Semiconductor makes an adjustable TO-220 package regulator that can
handle 5 amps.
It is available from Digikey.com for$2.11. Part number is LM338T-ND
Check National's web site for an application note with typical circuitry.
You will probably need a metal case to heatsink it.

I have a IC-2AT that I'm wanting to use as a Fox Hunt Transmitter. From
what I understand feeding 12 volts directly into the radio will cause
problems. As such, I plan to drop the voltage from 12 volt to 9 volts,
however I don't know the best way to do this. I thought about using a
voltage regulator, but all the regulators I have seem are only rated to
1 amp. After some searching I found the IC-2AT pulls 1.2 amps on
transmit. The power source is going to be a 6 Amp Hour 12 volt battery.
What would be the best way to step the voltage down to 9 volts, and
still allow plenty of current to last an hour or more on transmit.
