This is an interesting question. I thought the AT-250 was so old it
couldn't possibly be auto-sensing. I found a portion of the manual at
www.mods.dk, and agree that it isn't clear about it.

A box called "TUNE switch" says to tune the antenna and then turn the TUNE
Switch off. It also says that after tuning is complete, the motor may
activate during operation if you leave the TUNE switch ON. This suggests
that it does have auto-sensing of a sort.

HOWEVER, the "CAUTION" on the first page, repeated on the last page of the
manual, says you MUST limit power to less than 50 watts when tuning is
initiated. When not tuned, voltages inside can be extremely high, and
could cause damage to the transceiver. I suspect damage from arcing could
occur inside the tuner as well.

Therefore, even if it has auto-sensing capability, it is not good practice
to routinely rely on that alone unless there is some way to limit power.

Nowhere in the manual could I find a hookup with no control cable
connected. Operating it that way would be at the user's risk.
