Why not just get an older laptop running Windows 98 or Me for your ham
programs. That's what I did. Got an old Sony laptop that works
great. I only use it in the Jeep with GPS programs or programming the
Kenwood D700A. If I am at home I just use the home computer. My
regular laptop doesn't have a serial port either, and I gave up trying
to use a USB to Serial adapter.

I agree that an older computer running Win98SE *should* be more than
adequate for handling ham radio applications, but the author of my
favorite ham radio program, Ham Radio Deluxe, says that he doesn't
always test minor updates of his program (e.g., the recent one that
added rotator control) with Win98SE or WinME and that with the next
major update he may declare WinXP to be the only officially supported OS.

Older computers can also run Windows XP. My comment was only related
to the fact that it would be typical to find something like Me on an
older computer. I have a computer that is over 10 years old that is
running Windows XP SP2 with no problem at all. The Internet wasn't
even available to the public back then. And yes, it does have an
RS-232 port. For many years, it was my ham radio computer, long
before XP was envisioned. Today, with XP SP2 it will take on any ham
radio program. I can also dual-boot it into Windows 98 Me if I have
to have it for something.
