Why not just get an older laptop running Windows 98 or Me for your ham
programs. That's what I did. Got an old Sony laptop that works
great. I only use it in the Jeep with GPS programs or programming the
Kenwood D700A. If I am at home I just use the home computer. My
regular laptop doesn't have a serial port either, and I gave up trying
to use a USB to Serial adapter.

Do you have to have a serial port on the laptop? Many newer
laptops/notebooks no longer supply a serial port. One solution you may
consider if you get stuck is a USB to serial converter. There are so
many of them out there. A few of them are junk. One that I have found
to work is the Belkin F5U109. I am even able to get it to work with
MS-DOS applications that run in a window in WinXP. The drivers allow
you to select a different COM port in the setup.

I couldn't even get the Belkin to work with my HP. That's when I gave
up and got an old laptop with a serial port.

Hello N1RSP (George)

Here I run Converter USB 232: USB - Serial (Driver & Manual). Tested to
comply with FCC Standards for home or office use. Model No. U232-P9.
It works very well with XP 4 and AEA 2232 interfaced with Yaesu FT-990.

Good luck, VE2GAG

The problem with usb to serial converter is that it runs way to slow on most
programs I use.I have the Belkin USB to Serial als another one and just to
slow.Direct to serial port is many times faster.

Interesting, 'cause I use my USB-enabled serial port to download data into
flash onto my clients' boards at 115.2K at full speed and with negligible
CPU usage. Maybe it's a settings problem? What does "too slow" mean exactly?

takes just 4 to 5 minutes to upload a program.and on the other hand mine is

Happy hunting.
