Default Pactor III and Kenwood TS50

Hi folks

I am looking at adding a pactor III modem to ny rig. I've heard that
some folks are hard wiring the modem directly to the radio rather than
using the mic input.

Questions:

1) if I conncet to the mic input, can I leave the mic connected too
(i.e. a "through connection") or do I ahve to disconnect the mic and
hook up the modem, then disconnect and reconnect mic each time I want to
send email?

2) Other than convenience are there any other good reasons to hardwire
directly to the radio.

3) Anybody know where hardwire instructions can be located?

Thanks everybody.
