That was the mission I was thinking of. I used to fly a fair amount of
single engine,single pilot night IFR. My only remedy for a total elecrical system failure was to always know which way to go to find clear weather... There are cheaper multi-band ham transceivers that have wider receivers than that. My VX-5, for example, can receive aircraft - AND any frequency from 0.5 MHz to 999 MHz, AM, FM or WFM, and can transmit on 6, 2 and 440. And it's cheaper. From what I see on their web page, it appears that the VXA-700 is an airband transceiver (not just a receiver), with 2-meter amateur operation added.
