Radio Astronomy Group (RAG) will have a stand at the annual British
Astronomical Association (BAA) Exhibition Meeting to be held this year
at the National Space Centre in Leicester, on 30 June.

The group intend to have a live demonstration of the latest Starbase
software, with a connection to Martyn Kinder's VLF receiver, the GOES
Xray satellite data feed, and some other examples of how it will work
with the RAG developments. Past copies of the Circular and CD will be
available for purchase.

The group currently have three university related projects still at the
negotiation stage, but when they get the go ahead, they will announce
these and will be looking for more eager volunteers! RAG should then
have some significant external projects as well as their own
developments, all of which will be accessible over the Starbase
network.

The episode of the 1960 BBC TV comedy series 'Hancock's Half Hour'
starring Tony Hancock and in particular, the infamous bungling radio
ham segment containing those now classic lines "It is are not raining
in Tokyo" and "GLK London calling the world" is available on YouTube.

This classic episode shows Hancock as a ham radio enthusiast who
receives a mayday call from a ship in distress but keeps getting
distracted just before he can take down its position.

The episode is split into three parts. To view log onto YouTube and
type in Tony Hancock. Foyle and District Amateur Radio Club (FADARC)
will be heading to St Angelo Airport, Enniskillen for the 2007 Jet
World Masters competition. The competition runs from 5 July to 14 July
the club will be on the air during the final two days of the event with
its call sign MN0AKU/P.

This event showcases model aircrafts capable of flying at up to 250
mph. In attendance will be 100 pilots from some 31 countries
demonstrating their skills in what has been described as the ultimate
radiocontrolled model aircraft competition. More details can be viewed

The MSF 60 KHz time and frequency signal broadcast by VT Communications
on behalf of NPL is occasionally taken off the air to allow maintenance
work to be carried out in safety.

The next scheduled maintenance break will be at 0900 on 26 June until

A new 70cm repeater situated near Bromley in Kent entered service on 16
June. GB3LK, a new wide split 70cm repeater became operational on RU72.
Co-located with GB3OK on 2 metres, coverage will include parts of
London, north Kent and south Essex. More information can be found on

Now for the news of special events

Special event station 9A07P will be active on all bands and modes until
31 December to celebrate the city of Djurdjevac. All QSOs will be
confirmed automatically via the bureau. GB1EPC will be active until 28
June to celebrate the European PSK Club 1st birthday. The station will
be setup at Bridge Street in Glasgow. Anyone is welcome to operate at
the station, PSK modes only of course. QSL cards via MM0DFV. The annual
transmission on Alexanderson Day with the Alexanderson alternator on
VLF 17.2 kHz will take place Sunday 1 July at 0900 UTC. Tuning up will
be from 0815 UTC and the transmission will be repeated at 1300 UTC,
tuning up from 1215 UTC. The station will be open to visitors. There
will be activity on amateur radio frequencies with the call SK6SAQ. For

welcome. A veterans' weekend using call sign GB2VET will be held on 3
to 5 August at the East Park, Holderness Road, Hull. All veterans from
the Navy, Army and Air force along with members of the public are

Rico (NA-099) until 28 June. He will operate from the QTH of Flavio,

active as 9A/PA4JJ/p from Porec, Croatia until 7 July. Operating on

Francois, ON4LO, will be active as CT/ON4LO/p from Portuguese
lighthouses Cabo de Sao Vincente and Ponta Sagres until 29 June. He
plans to operate SSB and digital modes on 10 to 40 metres. Celebrating
the 750th anniversary of Krakow's city rights is HF750C, which will be
active until 30 June. QSL via SP9BRP. Expect also a large number of
local operators to use special prefix SN0 during the year. Zhang,
BD3APX, will be active as BD3APX/2 from Juhua Island from 29 June to 1
July. Activity will be on 40 to 10 metres CW, SSB and digital modes.

Gambia until 29 June. This will only be a part time operation, and

M0HSW and M0TJH, will be QRV as EI/homecall/P from Inishbofin Island
(EU-121) until 25 June 10 UTC on the 27, then from Inishmore (EU-006)
from 20 UTC on 27 June to 10 UTC on the 29 June. They will also try to
operate for a few hours weather permitting, from the Blasket Islands

20 metres SSB and CW as F5OGG/p from the lighthouse on Noirmoutier
Island (EU-064) on 30 June. He will participate in the WLOTA Contest.

His Majesty the King of Spain Contest takes place between 1200 on 23
June to 1200 on 24 June on 1.8MHz to 28MHz bands, SSB mode. The
exchange takes the form of RS and serial number. The RSGB 50mhz
activity takes place between 2000 and 2230 local on 26 June on the
50MHz band, all modes. The exchange takes the form of RST, serial
number and locator.

Now the solar factual data for the period from the 11 to 17 of June,
compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS.

4 Solar activity was very low with no significant solar flares taking
place. The solar disc became spotless on the 14th. Solar flux levels
declined from 73 units on the 11th to 67 by the 17th. The average was
70 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 17th was the same level
as last week at 74 units. X-ray flux levels declined from A2.1 units on
the 11th to below the A1 level by the 14th. Geomagnetic activity was
quiet except for the 14th, which increased due to a small coronal hole
when the Ap index was 20 units. The average was Ap 8 units. The ACE
spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from 290 kilometres per
second to 630 during the disturbance. Particle densities were low
except for the 13th, which increased to 16 particles per cubic
centimetre on the 13th. Bz varied little on the quiet days and between
minus 11 and plus 10 nanoTeslas on the 14th. HF propagation was mildly
degraded when the geomagnetic field was active but, for the most part
it followed the pattern of recent weeks. Sporadic-E was prominent at 28
and 50MHz. 50MHz openings were reported to Guyana and the Caribbean.
There was at least one 144MHz opening to south-east Europe. There were
no reports of auroral activity. The Venezuela multi-band beacon, YV5B,
returned to service after a gap of six months and was heard in the UK
on all five frequencies with good signals. And finally the solar
forecast. This week the quiet side of the Sun is expected to rotate out
of view. Solar activity should be very low. However, there is a small
chance that activity could increase towards next weekend. Solar flux
levels are expected to increase and by next weekend could be into the
80's. Geomagnetic activity should be mostly quiet until next weekend
when a small recurring coronal hole disturbance should take place. MUFs
during daylight hours at equal latitude should be 19MHz for the south
and 16MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be around 10MHz.
Paths this week to South Africa should have a maximum usable frequency
with a 50 per cent success rate of around 23MHz. The optimum working
frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 18MHz. The best
time to try this path will be between 0800 and 1700 hours UTC.
Sporadic-E is expected to take place on some days. Now that we are at
the peak of the sporadic-E season expect some openings up to 144MHz.
