GB2RS NEWS Sunday 5 August 2007
1 GB2RS NEWS Sunday 5 August The news headlines * Gloucestershire County RAYNET assist in floods * UK Licence Examination at the RSGB HF Convention * Hamfest to be held in Dorset Gloucester County RAYNET was called upon for assistance last week during the floods. The service was activated by the County Council Emergency Planning Officer to assist in the evacuation of the county emergency centre on 25 July. All the RAYNET contingency equipment was stripped out of the radio room underneath Shire Hall in the city centre, and a temporary station relocated at the Tri-Service Control centre at Quedgeley, to the south of Gloucester. The prime use of the station was to establish links to the district rest centres established around the county and to provide backup links to out-of-county sites where telephone systems would still be operational, should the Walham substation have failed. Liaison was kept with other RAYNET Groups at Bath, Gwent and Bristol through Zone 7 Controller Chris, G8RXA. This ensured they were kept abreast of the situation and could be called in to assist if necessary. Thanks to the efforts of members working long hours on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, voice and data communications links were set up to the Triservice Control Centre from Tewkesbury, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Cirencester and Stroud. On Thursday, a callout was issued by the County Emergency Planning Officer for radio links to be set up between the Triservice Control and the five main bottled water distribution points for vulnerable people. RAYNET members responded to the request by message distribution and assisting the volunteer teams at the locations. The RSGB is offering those wishing to obtain a UK Amateur Radio Licence the opportunity to complete one or more of the required examinations over the weekend of the HF Convention, 12 to 14 October. Candidates must book their examinations prior to the event and must provide evidence they have completed the required practical assessments. Limited facilities to complete assessments at the HFC can be arranged. The contact for further information and for booking examinations is Susan Lloyd, email , or by phone on 0870 904 7373. The Flight Refuelling Amateur Radio Society is holding Hamfest 2007 on Sunday 12 August at the Cobham Sports and Social Club grounds at Merley, Dorset. There will be live demonstrations of 1.3GHz ATV from the proposed Bournemouth area repeater GB3SQ. Members of the South Coast Repeater and Beacon Group will be on hand to explain the workings of local repeaters and the Bell Hill Microwave Beacon Complex. The onsite model steam railway will be in operation for the children and there will be several demonstrations of Tesla coil systems. Plus of course there will be the usual trade stands and a large radio car boot sale section. For full details contact the Hamfest organiser Mike Sykes, M0MJS, at . 2 AMSAT-UK beginners workshops again proved successful at their Annual Colloquium in Guildford. The workshops aim to show newcomers how to get started in the exciting world of amateur satellite communications. Many are amazed to discover that they can communicate through amateur satellites or speak to astronauts onboard the International Space Station using little more that a handheld dual-band FM transceiver. Now that all licensees have access to the Satellite Service there was a sharp increase in the numbers of Foundation and Intermediate licensees attending. The RSGB 144MHz Activity and Club Championship takes place on 7 August between 2000 to 2230 local time on all modes. The exchange takes the form of RST, serial number, locator and postal district. The Worked All Europe CW Contest takes place on 11 August between 0000 to 2359 on the 3.5 to 28MHz bands. The exchange takes the form of RST and serial number. Now the solar factual data for the period from 23 July to 29 July, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS Solar activity was very low with no solar flares taking place at all. The solar disc was spotless until the 28th when a small group appeared. Solar flux levels varied little day to day and averaged 69 units. The 90 day 4 solar flux average on the 29th was 74, that's the same level for the last 7 weeks. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum A1 level everyday. Geomagnetic activity started at very quiet levels with an Ap of only 2 units on the 24th and the 25th. On the 29th due to a coronal hole activity increased to 14 units. The average was Ap 6 units. The ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from 290 kilometres per second on the 26th to 640 by the 29th. Particle densities were low but increased to 46 particles per cubic centimetre on during the morning of the 29th. Bz varied between minus 1 and plus 2 nanoTeslas on the quiet days and between minus 8 and plus 12 on the 29th. Despite the low levels of geomagnetic activity HF conditions seemed mostly unexciting - until the increased activity for the IOTA contest suggested that good DX possibilities might previously have been going unexploited. Sporadic-E is now past its seasonal peak, but there were still openings on 28, 50 and 70MHz on several days. And finally the solar forecast. This week the active side of the Sun is expected to be looking our way. Saying that, solar activity should continue at mostly very low levels with only a small chance that activity could increase to low. However, solar flux levels are expected to be at their highest for this solar rotation. Solar flux levels should be around the mid to high 70's for most of the week. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be quiet today and tomorrow but then due to a coronal hole activity should increase. This disturbance could last till almost the weekend. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows are expected to be about 9MHz. Paths this week to India should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of about 23MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be around 18MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 0800 and 1600 hours UTC. Normally, August, heralds the end of the main summer season for sporadic E. Openings should still take place this week, however, a gradual decline will take place as the month progresses. And that's all for this week from the propagation team. 5 Next, the Local News: Please note that details of all RSGB-affiliated clubs and societies can be found on the RSGB website, including e-mail addresses and website links where known.
