Shannon Basin Radio Club Sprint Challenge

The Shannon Basin Radio club is again running its
annual one-day Open, Fixed, Challenge for EI residents.
This challenge is open to all licenced operators and
short wave listeners, and will be held on the 4th of
November 2007 from 14:00 to 18:00 Hours.

The purpose of the challenge is to encourage radio
operators and short wave listeners to be active on the
H.F bands. The challenge will have three modes of
operation, and the winner in each mode will be awarded
with the following.

The Lough Allen Shield will be awarded to the highest
score in SSB. The Lough Ree Shield will be awarded to
the highest score in CW (A1A). The Lough Derg Shield
will be awarded to the highest score for SWL.

The above winners will also receive a personal trophy.

To receive a copy of the rules for the above
challenge, please send a stamped address envelope to
the contest manager EI6HW, Noel Mulvihill,
Hillquarter, Coosan, Athlone, Co Westmeath or e-mail
“nfmulvihill at eircom dot net”.

CQIR

Logs are continuing to roll in from all over the world
for the CQIR Contest. If you visit the IRTS web site
you will see a list of logs received as well as the
number of entries to date in the two prize draws. We
will also have shortly on the website, details of the
county and date of emigration as sent by the overseas
Irish stations, it makes fascinating reading. And just
a reminder to all stations who participated to send in
their logs by email as soon as possible for inclusion
in the results and the draws.

Marconi Clifden Celebrations

On the 17th of October 1907 Guglielmo Marconi sent his
first commercial message from the then new station at
Clifden, Ireland. This October in celebration of this
historic event members of the Galway Radio
Experimenters Club is running a special event station
until this coming Wednesday the 17th from Clifden. The
club has been issued the call sign EI100MFT for the
event, MFT been the last call sign used on the
original station.

On Wednesday they will be making a special linkup with
the Marconi sister station in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia.
Part of this linkup will be an exchange of greetings
between President Mary McAleese and Lieutenant Governor
of Nova Scotia the Honourable Mayann E. Francis. The
group will also be honoured to have Princess Electra
Marconi present as she is coming to Clifden for the
festival along with an Exhibit from the Marconi
Foundation in Bologna. The Galway Radio Experimenters
Club will also be presenting a display of vintage
equipment. More details on the festival can be found at

welcome and if you would like to participate this can

Waterford Rally

The Waterford Radio and Electronics Rally will take
place next Sunday the 21st of October at the Woodlands
Hotel on the Dunmore Road in Waterford. South East
Communications and Long Communications will be at the
rally. The IRTS, AREN and a bring-and-buy stand will
also feature.

Doors open at 11 a.m. and admission is 5 Euro,
accompanied children are admitted free of charge. For

Upcoming Rallies

The Foyle and District Rally will take place on Sunday
the 4th of November 2007 at the White Horse Hotel,

The Mayo Radio Rally will take place on Sunday the 18th
of November in the Belmount Hotel, Knock, Co. Mayo. For

South Dublin Radio Club

This year’s South Dublin Radio Club Christmas Party
will take place on Tuesday the 11th of December. After
last year’s success, the venue will remain the same;
"The Morgue", Tempelogue from 8.00 p.m. until late.

Members of other clubs and visitors are very welcome to
this social event. It’s always a great turnout. Limited
free food will be available for paid up members while
visitors can choose from the bar menu up to 9.00 p.m.

The club will then go on Christmas holidays until the
return on the 8th of January

also be faxed to 087 5 6302026. News should be
submitted via e-mail to “news at irts dot ie” for
automatic forwarding to both the radio and printed news
services. Please note that items for the radio news
should reach the editor no later than midday on Friday
in order to be guaranteed inclusion in the following
Sunday’s bulletin.
