On Tuesday 20 May, there is the UHF UK Activity Contest. This is held between 1900 and 2130UTC on the 23cm and 13cm bands. The exchange is RST, serial number and six character locator. On Thursday 22 May, there is the RSGB 80m Club Championship CW Contest. This is held between 1900 and 2030UTC on the 80m band between 3.520 and 3.570MHz. The exchange is RST and serial number. On Saturday and Sunday 24 and 25 May there is the 2008 CQ World-Wide WPX CW Contest. This is held between 0000GMT Saturday and 2359GMT Sunday. No WARC bands are allowed. And now the solar factual data for the period from 5 to 11 May compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS and Martin Harrison, G3USF. A small sunspot group that was visible on the 5th disappeared, which left the solar disc spotless for the remainder of the period. Solar activity was very low with no solar flares occurring at all. Solar flux levels declined from 68 units to 66 by the 8th. Levels then increased but only back to 68 units. The average was 67 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 11th was 71 units, that's the same level as last week. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum reporting level throughout. Geomagnetic activity started at just unsettled levels as a coronal hole disturbance declined. The remaining days were quiet with an Ap index of only 3 units on the 9th and the 11th. The average was Ap 6 units. The ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds decline from 670 kilometres per second to 310 by the 11th. Particle densities were low everyday with less than one particle per cubic centimetre recorded on the 7th and the 8th. Bz varied between minus 5 and plus 5 nanoTeslas throughout the period. Not so many weeks ago the HF bands were closing before many operators got home from work. Now they are staying open substantially later, with 14MHz on occasion providing contacts to North and South America until around 2300UTC. The Sporadic-E season has yet to get fully under way, but brief openings were reported on both 28 and 50MHz. Meanwhile, operators on UHF and the microwave bands enjoyed substantially enhanced propagation for much of the week, principally towards northern Europe. And finally the solar forecast. This week solar activity is expected to be at very low levels. Solar flux levels should be around the 70 mark for most of the week. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be quiet today but at sometime tomorrow or Tuesday a coronal hole disturbance should arrive. Normally, the most disturbed period of a coronal hole disturbance is during the first two days after its arrival. Quiet levels should return by 4 next weekend. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 18MHz for the south and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be around 9MHz. Levels could be lower during the disturbance. Paths this week to Japan should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of around 19MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate should be about 15MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 1000 and 1500 hours UTC. Sporadic-E should take place on some days. And that's all for this week from the propagation team. 5 Next, the Local News: Please note that details of all RSGB-affiliated clubs and societies can be found on the RSGB website, including e-mail addresses and website links where known [Note to newsreaders: Please read the local news items appropriate to the service area of your transmission.] NEWS FOR THE SOUTH-EAST and EAST ANGLIA On Monday 19 May Braintree and District Amateur Radio Society is holding its AGM.
