Homebrew continues to attract newcomers to the hobby but some less
experienced builders seem to lack the confidence to give it a go. If
that sounds like you then why not come and take part in the Buildathon
at the HF Convention on the 11th and 12th of October? Steve Hartley,
G0FUW, will be leading a small team of experienced radio constructors
to build an 80m voice transceiver making no assumptions about previous
experience or soldering abilities. Steve and the team will be providing
all the tools and test equipment required and will be supervising
closely to ensure success. The Buildathon is not a race but is intended
to provide a safe learning experience to help you make a start in
homebrewing your own amateur radio equipment. The cost of the event,
which includes the Brendon transceiver kit from Walford Electronics, is

The G5RP Trophy is an annual award to encourage newcomers to HF DXing.
However, the award is not limited to youngsters or the newly-licensed:
the HF DX bug can bite at any age or after many years of experience on
other bands. If you are an established HF DXer and want to recommend
someone to be awarded the G5RP Trophy for 2008, now is the time to send
in your nomination. Your nominee should be an up-and-coming HF DXer who
has made rapid progress in the last year and has some real achievements
to show, for example, a good total of new countries worked or some
serious HF DXpedition activity. This prestigious award will be
presented this year at the RSGB HF Convention on 10th - 12th October.

The MOD UK Defence Spectrum management Consultation closed on the 5th
September. A joint response from the RSGB, the UK Microwave Group,

Strathclyde RAYNET are still seeking a few additional operators for
this year's Tour of Mull Rally on 10th and 11th October. The organisers
will refund the ferry fare and make a donation towards fuel costs to
everybody who has pre-registered with them and has a valid position on
the event and although last minute additions

cause them a problem there should still be plenty time at this stage to
get any additional personnel registered. Anybody interested should call

After a long struggle, the Cambridgeshire Repeater Group's 70cm D-Star
Repeater, GB7PI now has gateway access enabled. The repeater is located
at Barkway, Hertfordshire and the group Technical Co- ordinator Gavin
Nesbitt, M1BXF, would welcome reports from both RF and gateway users.

GB7PI is co-located with several other repeaters and having finally
been able to arrange internet access at the site, the CRG plans to
develop Echolink/IRLP facilities on as many of its repeaters as

Canada will soon have a new band plan for the HF bands. The band plan
presently in use in Canada was adopted in 1996 and since then, many
changes have happened and other countries band plans have been revised
and modified. You can see the way in which Canada has organised the HF
spectrum for its amateurs on the Radio Amateurs of Canada website
www.rac.ca and click on MF * HF Band Plan.

Churches and Chapels On the Air is taking place on Saturday 13th
September. Over 20 special event callsigns have been issued. Activity
is expected from 1000 *1600 local time using SSB on frequencies around
3.747, 7.047 and 14.320MHz. See www.wacral.org for details.

A new website to learn and practice Morse telegraphy has been launched
called Learn CW Online. While sticking to well-proven methods for
learning and practice, all you need for using LCWO is a web browser.
This gives the user the opportunity to practice CW wherever an internet
connection is available and it retaining your personal settings, scores
and statistics. Check out http://lcwo.net.

The DX Magazine 2008 Most Wanted Survey is now up and running on their
website. The magazine want to encourage everyone to submit your needed
countries lists to because, they say, this is what DXpeditioners use to
decide where to go. Tick each block as necessary to indicate your needs
on the various modes and click SUBMIT at the bottom. There is also a
box at the bottom for comments. The results will be published in the
January/February issue of The DX Magazine. Go to www.dxpub.com and

Now for the news of special events

On 7 September, ON4WAR will be on the air from 0600 to 1400UTC to
commemorate the sacrifice of the Belgian Resistance in World War II and
especially those of the Refuge B 40 in Waudrez in Belgium. From the
hour to the half hour will be CW transmissions with a Waddom Paraset MK
VII on 3.560, 3.579, 3.583 and 7.025MHz. Then from the half hour to the
hour it will be SSB transmissions on the HF bands. QSL information via

Morecambe Bay Amateur Radio Society will be celebrating 25 years on the
air today, Sunday 7 September, from 0900 to 1700 at the Trimpell sports
and leisure club in Morecambe, Lancashire. There will be equipment
displays old and new and GX4YBS will be on the air.

GB0TBF will be on the air today for the Tim Bobbin Festival in
Rochdale. Also, GB2EFF will be on the air for the Epping Forest
Festival in London.

The Luton VHF Group will have GB2CI on the air, from Caldey, one of the
Welsh Islands off the coast of Tenby, Pembrokeshire, IO71PP, until
1100UTC on 8 September. The station is validated for IOTA, WAB and will
be validated for WLOTA. The group will also be taking part in the SSB
Field Day and 2m Trophy contests over this weekend using the club
callsign GW3SVJ/P.

The Orkney Museum Amateur Radio Station, GB2OWM, will be in operation
from its premises at Kiln Corner, Kirkwall until Wednesday 10 September
during the 18th Orkney International Science Festival. Probable
operating periods will be weekdays and Sunday afternoons between 2.30
and 4.30pm. Operation will be primarily on HF SSB.

The Radio Society of Harrow will be running a demonstration station
GB0RBP at RAF Bentley Priory over the weekend of 12 to 14 September as
part of the Heritage Open Days programme. This is the first time in 80
years that Bentley Priory has been open to the public since it became
an RAF base.

Look out for GB0HSF at the Hanbury Steam Fair in Worcestershire on 12
September. Then there will be GB0BSR from the Bedfordshire Steam Rally
near Biggleswade on 13 September.

GB2ANG will be on the air with the Angel of the North Radio Club on 13
September and GB0RAF will be on the air from Gatenby, North Yorkshire.

GB0HPT will be on air for churches on the air on 13 September from St
Francis church in Tamworth. They plan to use both HF and VHF bands.

GB2MMC will be on the air from Mount Methodist Church, Fleetwood in
Lancashire on 13 September. The church has just celebrated its
centenary year

Other stations on the air for Churches on the Air weekend are GB0COA
from Wkye and GB4STH from St Thomas in Heptonstall, both in West
Yorkshire. From East Yorkshire there will be GL0LOW from Lowthorpe
Church and GB4SJH from Saint Johns in Harpham. GB0SLC will be on the
air from St Leonards Church in Skegness and GB2NSW will be on the air
from Saint Nicholas in Withernsea. GB0STP will be transmitting from St
Philips Church, Reigate and GB2CCC from Christ Church Cathedral in
Oxford. In Norfolk, GB2NNC

will be on the air for the North Norfolk Circuit and GB2SAC will be
from St Annes Church in Tonna Neath in Wales. The Historic Churches
trust will be on the air from Suffolk with GB5HCT. In Minehead, GB5SMC
will be on the air from St Michaels Church. Finally, GB6SMC will be on
the air from South Malling Church in Lewes, East Sussex.

GB8AP will be operating at weekends in September to celebrate and
publicise Liverpool's status as European Capital of Culture.

In commemoration of 90 years of the steelworks, PA90CORUS will be on
the air until 28 September. Activity will be on all bands and modes.

GB1CM, which is to commemorate the first anniversary of the loss of the
rally driver Collin McRae, will be on the air during the month of
September on 80m through to 6m on SSB.

And now the HF DX news compiled from 425 DX News and other sources

ZS6/DL3PS will be on the air from Johannesburg until 12 September while
on a business trip. He will be active on 80 to 10 meters using CW, SSB
and digital modes in his spare time. QSL to home call.

SV8/OK1MBZ/P will be active from Corfu until 11 September. Activity
will be on all HF bands, CW only. QSL via his home callsign, direct or
by the bureau.

IN3VZE will once again be active holiday style from the southwest shore
of Lake Malawi until 11 September using 7Q7CE. He will be on all bands
using SSB and the digital modes. QSL card via the bureau or direct to
VP8LP.

DL1BKK and DL1BKI are celebrating 40 years of marriage on a holiday
style DXpedition as 8Q7KK from Kuramathi in the Maldive Islands until
17 September. QSL to DL1BKK, direct or via the bureau. There's no
electronic QSLing for this one.

A team of 8 Korean operators will be active from Tok Island in the Sea
of Japan using a specially issued callsign, D9D, between 13 and 18
September. However, some operators may sign as homecall/5, for example
DS2GOO/5 sometimes.

A four man team will activate Ireland's most difficult IOTA, The Great
Blasket Islands, between 10 and 14 September. Activity will be on 80 to
10 meters using both CW and SSB.

J48HW and SV8/HA0HW will be active from Thassos Island, Greece until 10
September. Activity will be on the HF bands (mainly on 40/30/20/17
meters and mainly on CW, with some SSB, RTTY and PSK31 as well), and 6
metres. QSL via his home callsign, by the HA Bureau or direct.

K3GV/VY2 will be on the air from Prince Edward Island, Canada between 1
and 22 September. Activity will be on 20 and 15 metres around the usual
IOTA frequencies. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the bureau.

Members of Sands Contest Group and Workington Amateur Radio Society are
combining to activate the Isle of Jura from 22 to 29 September this
year. They are hoping to be active on all modes and bands as conditions
allow.

Now the contest news

Today, 7 September, sees the final few hours of the RSGB 144MHz trophy
that finishes at 1400. It sees huge activity on the 144MHz band
throughout Europe and if there is any sort of enhancement to
propagation at all, you will make contacts much further than normal.
The exchange is RS plus serial number and locator.

The final 144MHz Backpackers event also finishes today at 1500. The
exchange is RS plus serial number and locator.

On HF, the SSB Field Day is finishing at 1300. The exchange is RS and
serial number.

Ireland's annual MRG VHF/UHF SSB Challenge takes place today between
1400 hrs and 1700UTC. Any EI/GI operator holding an amateur
radio/experimenters licence can participate. Clubs can also
participate. Exchange is RS plus serial number and Maidenhead locator.

The RSGB 432MHz UK Activity Contest takes place on 9 September from
1900 to 2130 using all modes. The exchange is RS, serial number and
locator.

The RSGB HF 80m Sprint series continues with the SSB event on 11
September. Try and have a go at this different format, it's fun! The
exchange is both callsigns, serial number and name or nickname.

The second 70MHz Contest takes place on 14 September between 0900 and
1200.Four metre contests are taking on a new dimension with the very
welcome increase in activity from around Europe. This will almost
certainly change the dynamics of what it takes to succeed in 70MHz
contests * outlying parts of the UK having previously been favoured.

On the international contest scene, Worked All Europe SSB is on the
weekend of 13/14 September, which is a fun one to try. Using SSB on 3.5
to 28MHz, the exchange is RS and serial number.

The annual IARU Region 1 Amateur Television Contest takes place from
1800UTC on 13 September until 1200UTC on 14 September on all bands from
70cm upwards. Stations are encouraged to participate, or just look for
increased amateur TV activity on these bands. Talkback is most likely
to be found on 144.75MHz FM. Details of how to enter the contest can be
found on the BATC website and entrants do not need to be BATC members.

Now the solar report for the period from the 25th to the 31st of
August, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS, and Martin Harrison, G3USF.

For another week the solar disc was spotless, that's now 42 days
without a visible sunspot. During the last sunspot minimum there was
also a 42 day period void of sunspots. This period was from the 13th of
September to the 24th of October 1996, which turned out to be the
longest spotless period for that minimum. Solar activity was very low
and solar flux levels were as expected, just above the minimum level at
67 units

everyday except for the 28th which was 66 units. The average was 67.
The 90 day solar flux average on the 31st was 66 units, that's the same
level as last week. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum
reporting level throughout. Geomagnetic activity was very quiet with
the Ap index of only 3 units on 5 days out of the week. The remaining
two days the Ap was 2 units. The average was Ap 3 units. The ACE
spacecraft saw solar wind speeds vary between 270 and 370 kilometres
per second. Particle densities were low except for the 29th which
increased to 14 particles per cubic centimetre. Bz varied between minus
6 and plus 5 nanoTeslas for the period.

And finally the solar forecast. This week solar activity is expected to
be very low with the solar disc spotless on most days. Please remember
however, that solar activity could increase at any time, and when it
does it will be with very little warning. Solar flux levels are
expected to be in the mid to high 60's. Geomagnetic activity is
expected to be quiet until about Friday or Saturday when a coronal hole
disturbance is expected to arrive. This disturbance should last no
longer than a couple of days. This coronal hole as shrunk in size. At
the beginning of the year the disturbance from this coronal hole lasted
6 days, but on each rotation the hole as got smaller in size. Anybody
who would like a copy of a solar rotation chart showing coronal hole
disturbances should send a stamped addressed envelope to G0CAS who is
QTHR. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around
19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows are
expected to be about 9MHz. Paths this week to India should have a
maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of about
23MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate of
around 18MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 0800 and
1500 hours UTC
