HAMFEST NOVEMBER 8

WIA Secretary Geoff Atkinson VK3AFA has attended the Gold Coast Amateur Radio
Society and this enabled Geoff to present to the Club their 2007 Club Grant
Scheme cheque which will go towards costs associated with the replacement of
the 2m Repeaters on Mt Tamborine and Mt Springbrook.

In presenting the cheque to Club Secretary Aaron Davidson VK4VOX, Geoff
commended the Club on their activities and achievements and their successful
application to the Club Grants scheme.

REDCLIFFE
www.redclifferadioclub.org.au/

The club conducted a working bee last Saturday and almost completed the 2
awnings over the east and wet entrances to the clubhouse. 15 club members
split into 4 different teams to construct the uprights and cut the roofing
for the awnings, another group re-wiring the radio room, the third group
digging new drainage trenches and the last group began a ruthless clean up
of the clubhouse.

By 4 pm 3 trailer loads of junk and rubbish had been taken to the tip with
the exception of the guttering, both awnings were completed, most of the
cabling was completed and all the draining was completed.
What a huge effort by all those who were there. Thanks to all for your
continued support for the club.

On Monday when Ken VK4FKEN went down to clean the club he was heard to remark
"Who left the blood on the awnings?" Yes next time leather gloves will be
used, the edges of roofing iron can be very sharp!

JOTA.
The club is gearing up for this year's JOTA where some 300 scouts, cubs and
seniors will be coming to use the club's camp site at Murrenbong scout camp
near Petrie. Activities that will be undertaken by the scouts will include
building electronic kits, learning CW, speaking to other scouts and cubs
using echolink and hf bands and introducing foxhunting. Gary VK4FGAZ will
be the co-ordinator for the scouts in & out of our site.
If any other amateurs in the Brisbane area can assist you are most welcome
to join us. Please contact the club secretary, Peter VK4TAA if you can via
the club's website.

JOTA weekend scouts and cubs from the Albany Creek scout group with the
assistance with members of the Redcliffe Club will present the national
WIA news. Shawn VK4WWW will be coordinating his scouts and cubs as
newsreaders for this highly anticipated activity.

SUNSHINE COAST

Ken and Pat Fuller manned the WIA table at the Sunfest organized by the
Sunshine Coast Club at Woombye on Saturday 13 September. The club organized
an excellent site in front of the entrance and it was well patronized and
organized. The show ran from about 9am to about midday

The day went very well for the organizers and there were the usual suspects
trudging out of the doors with various goodies which will no doubt be back at
some HamFest in the future. There was a good sprinkling of commercial sales
people which is encouraging and this renewed interest by business was possibly
a result of the increased product purchases by the Foundation Licensed
amateurs.

During "our" meet and greets "we" met several F calls who had, or were in the
process of, upgrading. One purchased a copy of the foundation licence booklet
since he had given his away to a prospective new amateur which we though
indicated a lively interest in the hobby in this part of the world..

October Camp Catchup 11 and 12 October
Its only 2 weeks until the October Camp catchup at Lake Dyer near Laidley and
spots are filling fast. Camping is free for the first 2 nights and SCARC are

will also be a raffle with a great prize.

The usual car boot sale and a trip to the pioneer village.

So come for a day or as some, come for four days.

There will be a listening watch on 146.500 and the local repeater 147.700 neg
offset so give a shout as you get near or get lost. I dont mean "get lost"

HASH Night
No its not an illegal activity, we are talking about Hams at Someones House, our
quarterly get together for SCARC members, family and guests which will be held
Friday 3rd of October at the QTH of Harvey VK4AHW from 6pm. This is our 3rd
HASH night and they are proving to be a great way to wind down after a hard week
in the salt mine.

JOTA & JOTI Now for the Future

Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree on the Internet will be happening across the
world this year on the weekend of 18th and 19th October. There will be the
usual contingents of youth members and Radio Amateurs in dens and in the field
across Australia, having a heap of fun getting groups to communicate with each
other.

The Kennedy District Scout Groups will be having a District JOTA/JOTI weekend
at Camp Tarmaroo near Bluewater with at least 3 radio bases about the camp
and a hall full of EchoLink computers to keep the weekend alive. There will
also be on site training and Foundation Assessments happening.

Ross River Guides will be occupying the property on top of Herveys Range
with at least 3 radio operators in attendance for a all day all night
effort with lots of open space and a few big wire antennae deployed, including
Rhombics.

The rest of Cleveland District Guides will be joining up with other Guide
groups in Charters Towers at the Distant Education Centre and they are in
dire need of radio operators.

If you can help out with any of the above groups then please give
Townsville District JOTA co-ordinator Richard Goodhew VK4FRJG a call on
telephone 0429 178 360.

Arrrgghh is it are not raining at Maatsuyker Island?

Australia's most southerly lighthouse is home for six months to Tad VK2LNX and
his XYL Suzanne VK2FSNJ.

They have become the latest volunteer caretakers for this lonely output that
has rain on 250 days of the year.

Maatsuyker Island is 10 kilometres off the southern Tasmanian coast. It bears
the full brunt of the roaring forties across the Southern Ocean that results in
gale force winds, and occasional fierce storms with golf ball sized hail
stones.

Their duties include taking regular weather reports and maintaining the
heritage values of the lighthouse and its surrounds.

Tad VK2LNX has an Elecraft K3 transceiver and G5RV antenna. Do listen for Tad
and Suzanne on the bands.

Chris Megaw VK4FCC upgrades.

Those of you who listened to the Remembrance Day opening address this year will
remember Chris Megaw VK4FCCC's words along with Snow VK4IFS, who was serving in
Afghanistan at the time.

Chris is an Army Blackhawk Helicopter pilot currently serving in East Timor.

Chris has just sat a remote assessment from East Timor conducted by VK4DMC
Dale McCarthy, a WIA Nominated Assessor. Chris was successful and soon will
have a new advanced level call.

The assessment was conducted via landline with a Senior Army Officer
supervising Chris in East Timor. It was interesting to note that prior to the
assessment the exam papers were treated like a piece of enemy intelligence and
secured behind razor wire, locked doors, and in a combination safe.

Chris would like to thank Dale for his time and efforts, and also acknowledge
and thank Ron Bertrand VK2DQ for all his assistance.

SanDisk Teams with Music Industry on New Music Format.

Storage company SanDisk and the world's four largest music companies are
teaming to create a new physical music format called slotMusic, which the
companies hope will replace the audio CD. Based on the microSD flash-memory
storage format SanDisk created and sells in volume, slotMusic will provide
consumers with a digital album, liner notes, lyrics, artwork, and various other
extras.

The first 29 albums in the slotMusic format will be available in October in the
USA.

The new format is aimed primarily at cell phone users, many of whom already
have an available microSD slot on their devices. However, because microSD
compatibility isn't common on PCs, the slotMusic albums will also come with a
USB adapter so that customers can transfer the music to their PCs.

US Hiker safe with help of ham radio

The man, who used a radio to send out a call for help, was one of two rescued
on Sunday, a series of dots and dashes bouncing off the ionosphere Sunday
helped save the hiker who had broken his leg, he used a used a low-voltage
portable radio and Morse code to send out a call to help.

Six hundred miles away Robert Williams was testing his ham radio when he heard
the call signal, "W-7-A-U."

Williams replied and quickly learned, in the dashes and dots, that he was
talking with a 62-year-old man, who had slipped and hurt himself in the high
Cascades of Western Washington.

Rescue crews reached the man who had set up camp on Buck Creek Pass, at about
6,000 feet just west of the Chelan County line and he was taken to safety
Monday on horseback.

Ham radio operators were of paramount importance after the recent hurricanes
and when a tsunami ravaged southeast Asia but it's rare when Morse code is used
to initiate a rescue!

RSGB NEWS FROM G4NJH

The Irish Radio Transmitting Society has received a grant from the estate of
the late Frank Lewis, W3JGM. They have decided to consider spending the
proceeds of this legacy in the production of an introductory book on amateur
radio, written in a popular non-academic format suitable for an Irish
readership. This could be available in libraries and schools. Frank was a great
friend to many EI stations, having spent many holidays in Ireland from his home
in Maryland. The IRTS feel that this would be a fitting tribute to one who
loved amateur radio and Ireland.

NEWS FROM ARNEWSLINE

STATION NOT TO BLAME FOR CAR ALARM FAILURES

Car alarms going off can be annoying, but for a broadcaster it's even worse
when your radio station gets blamed for it.

Take the case of WRBQ-FM in Tampa Florida. According to the Tampa Tribune,
the FCC says that the station which operates on 104.7 MHz uses a frequency
that may contain a harmonic. One that could possibly be the same as the
frequency used by some car alarms.

The Tampa Tribune reported last week that a radio stations signal may be
causing some alarms going to either go off or stop working. But says the
FCC, the station is not in violation of any law since it says that the car
alarms in question are required to be designed to accept and reject any

interfering signals.

And not everyone is convinced that WRBQ is the cause. The newspaper said
that some think the problem could be traced to a local police radio system
or even wireless phones. Well let you know if we hear more.

WEIRD N WONDERFUL

I'M JOHN VK5BUI AND THIS IS THE WEIRD N WONDERFUL WITH THANKS TO
Westlakes News Letter and Frank VK2FJL.

Intel showed off a wireless electric power system that analysts say could
revolutionise modern life by freeing devices from transformers and wall
outlets.

Intel chief technology officer Justin Rattner demonstrated a Wireless Energy
Resonant Link at the California firm's annual developers forum in San
Francisco.

Electricity was sent wirelessly to a lamp on stage, lighting a 60 watt bulb
that uses more power than a typical laptop computer.

Most importantly, the electricity was transmitted without zapping anything or
anyone that got between the sending and receiving units.

"The trick with wireless power is not can you do it; it's can you do it safely
and efficiently," Intel researcher Josh Smith said in an online video
explaining the breakthrough.

"It turns out the human body is not affected by magnetic fields; it is affected
by elective fields. So what we are doing is transmitting energy using the
magnetic field not the electric field."

Examples of potential applications include airports, offices or other buildings
that could be rigged to supply power to laptops, mobile telephones or other
devices toted into them, according to Smith.

The technology could also be built into plugged in computer components, such as
monitors, to enable them to broadcast power to devices left on desks or
carried into rooms, "Initially it eliminates chargers and eventually it
eliminates batteries all together," an analyst said of Intel's wireless power
system

What on earth will become of the "energiser bunny?"

BROADCAST MONITORING SWL AND SCANNER NEWS

Digital radio for Australia

The popularity of listening to the radio broadcasting is enjoyed by 98 per cent
of Australians on average two hours a day.

Now the radio industry plans to roll out the new era of when radio is digitised
in Australia's capital cities in May next year.

Originally targeted for January 2009, Commercial Radio Australia blames the
delay on the need to get the necessary infrastructure in place. The Australian
Government has set a deadline July next for its introduction.

Analogue AM / FM broadcast stations are likely to continue for about 20 years.

The radio industry down-under, public owned broadcasting and commercial radio
stations alike are united that the switch on of digital radio will occur across
five capital cities.

They believe the synchronised arrival of digital radio will have enormous
marketing and consumer awareness benefits.

The radio industry will launch an on-air publicity campaign worth $10 million
in the New Year.

Digital radio will offer features like a pause and rewind, incorporate a colour
LCD display for text such as news and weather updates, plus images.

Those who have experienced digital radio during recent trials over the past
five years say they're most impressed by its exceptionally high quality sound.

Australians are renowned as being strong early adopters of new technology.

Digital radio is expected to see that trend continue.

VKCC Plaque

The 72nd Oceania DX Contest is taking place on the first two full weekends of
October, with SSB running from 0800 UTC on Saturday the 4th to 0800 UTC Sunday
5 and then the CW section taking place from 0800 UTC on Saturday the 11th of
October to 0800 UTC on Sunday the 12th of October.

All contesting HF bands from 160M to 10M are used during the contest (so no
WARC bands are permitted for contest traffic) and there should plenty of
opportunity to test your new antenna or see if those elusive sun spots make a
long awaited appearance.

The main aim of the contest is to promote HF contacts with stations in the
Oceania region and the yagis of the world will be pointing towards our part of
the planet, eager to put your call into their log. It will be a great
opportunity to use that shiny new two letter call if you just got one in the
ballot!

A good turn out is hoped for from VK, ZL and YB stations, as well as stations
from some of the rarer South Pacific countries. Oceania stations can work other
Oceania and non-Oceania stations, but non-Oceania stations can only work
Oceania stations.

To encourage VK participation, the VK Contest Club is sponsoring another plaque
this year. The plaque is awarded to the Australian radio club with the greatest
number of member stations participating in the Oceania DX Contest. For each
club, the number of participating member stations is equal to the sum of the
number of stations in the SSB section and the number of stations in the CW
section. In case of a tie between two or more clubs, then the scores of the
individual participating stations will be totalled for each club and the plaque
will be awarded to the club with the highest total score.

To qualify as a participant, a station must log at least 50 valid Oceania
DX Contest contacts during either the SSB or CW sections of the contest. To be
eligible for the plaque, a club must submit a minimum number of 5 participant
stations - which shouldn't be too hard to organise for the vast majority of VK
clubs. Only local clubs in Australia are eligible for this award, so national
organizations or clubs like the WIA are not eligible.

There must be at least 3 Clubs competing, for the plaque to be awarded. It'll
look great on the club shack wall, so why not get yourselves organised and
assemble an entry?

Full details can be found on the VKCC website, at WWW.VKCC.COM

Good Luck and Good DX!

See you on the bands,
Phil Smeaton

I'm Peter Harding with my final report for this years Remembrance Day Contest.

Now that the contest is over and all the logs are in, and having checked them
all. I am able to present the winners with their Certificates. I will not go
through all the individual results as that would take up the entire broadcast,
details for all of their availability will be covered towards the end of my
report.

I received a total of 300 Logs compared to 312 Last Year, with the overall
Points totalling to 36,144 points compared to last year total of 45,926.
Last year we received 19 logs from the Foundation calls this year it dropped
to 16. No logs received from ZL this year, and only 1 log for the receiving
only section

I believe that we can attribute the slight drop due to the Lighthouse Event
and the RD falling on the same weekend, unfortunately from time to time is
going to occur.

Thankfully this year, 54% of the logs were created electronically, the
remainder were either hand written or on pre-designed forms that I made
available, this made my task a lot easier and enable a quick final result
being made available.

Once again quite a few of this years entrants were from club stations running
Multiple Operators, Multi Modes and Multi bands.

It is no surprise that VK6 once again will get their name engraved on the RD
Trophy as the Winning State for 2008.

Well done to all those who took the time and effort to enter the contest and
also Posted or Emailed in their logs. This year as in the past, I did NOT have
to return any late logs.

This weekend Sunday the 28th September 2008, I anticipate in a PDF format the
complete listing of all logs, to be available on the WIA website, simply log
onto http://www.wia.org.au and click on the contest link, followed by the
Remembrance Day link this will take you to the RD page, and at the BOTTOM of
the page all will be revealed.

Should there be any dispute please email me your question to me
and I will do my best to answer your query,
within your email activate the flag for when the message was read by me.

Until next we meet this is Peter Harding VK4OD RD Contest manager

NOW AGAIN THIS WEEK IT IS TO VK6POP

Most Amateur Radio Societies agreed long ago not to conduct contests on the
JOTA weekend, however during the JOTA weekend there is unfortunately one
exception.
However, we're happy to announce that an agreement has been reached with the
organizers of the Worked All Germany contest on the use of amateur radio
frequencies during the JOTA.

The German contest stations will not operate in the following segments:

3650 - 3700 kHz
7080 - 7140 kHz
14100 - 14125 and
14280 - 14350 kHz
21350 - 21450 kHz
28225 - 28400 kHz.

This leaves all World Scout Frequencies in the clear !!
