The news headlines

* New National Hamfest announced by RSGB

The RSGB, in conjunction with the Lincoln Shortwave Club, announces a
brand new national amateur radio show for the UK. The National Hamfest
has the full support of the major amateur radio traders and
manufacturers and will take place on 2 and 3 October 2009. The venue
for the National Hamfest is the George Stephenson hall at the Newark
and Nottingham showground. Built in 2005, the spacious hall is well lit
and provides great facilities for both traders and visitors. There is
ample free parking and there will also be an amateur radio car boot
sale and a flea market. Full details of this event will be published in
the July RadCom and can also be found online at
www.nationalhamfest.org.uk.

Eight permits have been issued by the Irish regulator ComReg for
operation in the 501 to 504kHz segment. CW activity within Ireland has
been good with excellent signal strengths reported. Those with permits
are now looking forward to increased activity from the west.

Many listeners will be aware that a VHF and Up Stream is to included in
this year's RSGB Convention at Wyboston in October. Reg, G8VHI and
Neil, G3RIR have organised a full set of talks on both days of the
convention. It would unfair to suggest that one talk is to be more of a
highlight than another but they have some very famous names coming to
present talks including G4DDK, GM3SEK, GW4DGU and G3YLA, as well as
some talks from G8UBN, G7RAU and others. The talks range from the
highly practical to the highly technical and cover such subjects as
DXCC at Microwave, SOTA in a VHF context, the future of VHF
Communications and understanding how the weather impacts propagation.
More details will follow in the forthcoming weeks.

The Wessex Repeater Group is proposing that a 6m and 10m cross-band FM
voice repeater be established in South Wiltshire, to be co-sited with
the 2m repeater GB3JB. As cross-band repeaters have not previously been
allowed in the UK, The Wessex Repeater Group are carrying out an online
survey to determine the level of support the project would receive from
the amateur community, and not just within the UK. The group are about
to commence test transmissions from the site, IO81VC, on both 6m and
10m FM simplex frequencies, using the proposed repeaters antenna system
and power levels. A full schedule of dates and times for the test
transmissions, together with links to the on-line survey and full
repeater data, are available from the group's website at

2009 sees the Diamond Jubilee of Wakefield and District Radio Society
and on 18 June, the official opening of the club's new shack will take
place at the new HQ. The venue is at the 23rd Wakefield Scouts, behind
253 Barnsley Road, Wakefield WF1 5NU. The Master of Ceremonies will be
the RSGB President, Colin

Thomas, G3PSM and the actual opening of the shack will be performed by
WDRS founder Walter Farrar, G3ESP and John Carter, G7JTH. All are
welcome. Celebratory special event station GB6WRS will be on the air
throughout June, especially during the Diamond Jubilee Activity Weekend
from the well-located portable site at Woolley Edge from 19 to 21 June.

Cambridge & District Amateur Radio Club is 90 years old this year. On
21 June they will be having an anniversary field day and picnic at
Foxton Village Hall, just outside Cambridge. They will be operating a
station so listen out for them. There will be bring-and-barbecue and
all visitors will be welcome, whether radio amateurs, families, friends
or interested parties. Activities start at around 10am.

If you are driving in the very north of Scotland or the Orkneys between
6 and 16 July and your GPS guidance system goes brain dead, it might be
jammed - and the jamming is legal. The Ministry of Defence will be
conducting a Global Positioning System jamming exercise. The July tests
will be for limited periods between 1100 and 1500UTC. The location for
the exercise is to sea westwards from 58 degrees 57.4minutes North and
3 degrees 13.9 minutes West, which is about 60 nautical miles west of
Kirkwall. The Ministry of Defence conducts occasional tests on military
systems that may result in some loss of service to civilian users of
the Global Positioning System. This includes such equipment as in-car
navigation devices and other networks which rely on GPS signals.

An RSGB Train the Trainers session is taking place on Sunday 5 July,
hosted at the Britannia Bolton Hotel, Beaumont Road, Bolton, BL3 4TA,
home of the Bolton Wireless Club. The Train the Trainers scheme offers
guidance on running courses and teaching techniques and helps tutors
enhance the standard of their Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced

presenting the all-day course, which is free of charge to attendees.

The AMSAT-UK International Space Colloquium has changed venue. It will
now be held at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Guildford on 25 and 26 July.
The event attracts satellite builders and users from around the world.
The new RSGB GB4FUN radio communications module, which has a fully
equipped satellite station, will be available during the event for
visitors to work the satellites. Details at

The venue for the Ipswich Rally has changed. This year's rally, held on
Sunday 28 June, will be at the Orwell Crossing Lorry Park, A14
Eastbound, Nacton, Ipswich IP10 0DD. Details can be found at

The date for the Telford rally has changed to Sunday 6 September. The
event will still be held at Enginuity Technology Centre, Coalbrookdale,

This weekend is particularly busy for rallies and events in the UK.
Today, 14 June, the British Amateur Television club will be celebrating
its 60th Anniversary. The event is at Helledon lakes Hotel near
Daventry. There is a full lecture programme, outside exhibits in the
car park, indoor exhibits and traders and a Bring & Buy Stall running

Also today, 14 June, the Bangor & District ARS Radio & Computer Rally

On Sunday 14 June at 11am, a direction finding event will be held at
Mugdock Country Park, Milngavie, North of Glasgow. The event will be on
80 metres only and will be to the IARU format. Full details are on the

Sunday 21 June will see the Newbury Radio Rally and Boot Sale taking
place at the Newbury Showground in Berkshire, next to junction 13 of
the M4. The Newbury Radio Rally has been running for 22 years and is a
specialist event for anyone interested in radio communications,
computing and electronics. New for 2009 will be a display area of
amateur radio stations, exhibitions, special groups, clubs and
societies. Opening time for visitors is 9am. There is free car parking
and entry fees are £2 for visitors and £10 for a seller's pitch.
Catering and toilets are on site, including disabled facilities. More

Now the news of special events

GB2RAF will be operational for Museums on the Air on Saturday 20 June
from 10am to 4pm from the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum, RAF Neatishead
in Norfolk.

GB1BSP will be active from a children's' street party in Broom on
Saturday 13 June to raise funds for the local hospice and other
charities. One of the ideas is to let the children make contacts under
supervision and a prize will be awarded to the operator who gets the
longest DX. Broom is located 2 miles west of Biggleswade, close to Old
Warden and Shuttleworth, and its locator is IO92UB.

As part of their 40th anniversary, Dundalk Amateur Radio Society will
be activating their club call EI7DAR on the weekend 21 and 22 June. The
club will also be taking part in the IRTS 80m Counties Contest as
EI7DAR/P on the Sunday afternoon. This will include, as an exercise,
the testing of emergency comms country wide in co-operation with AREN
on 80m. An ATV video of the events will be relayed on the website
www.ei7dar.com.

Tamworth ARS will be taking part in International Museums Weekend on 20
and 21 June using the callsign GB2TC at Tamworth Castle. They will also
be activating the castle for Castles and stately Homes On The Air at
the same time.

GB250RB is on air to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of
Robert Burns, Scotland's National Bard. It will be activated throughout
2009. The next events are on 20 June at Stewarton Bonnet, activated by
Kilmarnock and Loudoun ARS and 27 and 28 June for Museums on the Air
Weekend, in Ayr, activated by the Ayr and Kilmarnock Radio Clubs.

On 18 June, GB2CS for the Cheshire Scouts will be on the air from
Sandiway, Cheshire.

On 19 June, GB0ZLB will be on the air for the Zetland Life Boat at
Redcar, Yorkshire.

Saturday 20 June sees lots of special event stations active, many for
Museums on the Air as well as other events. Look out for GB0RFL for
Relay for Life in Stoke on Trent, GB0OH from Oxburgh Hall in Norfolk
and GB2NWA from North Weald Airfield. Museums stations to listen for
are GB0RMM from the Royal Marines Museum in Southsea, GB2MOF from the
Museum Of Flight in East Lothian, GB2MOP from the Museum of Power in
Ceredigion, GB2RRM from the Ramsey Rural Museum in Huntingdon, GB4MNH
from the Manx National Heritage on the Isle of Man and GB4SMH from the
Signals Museum at RAF Henlow.

21 June sees GB2CPS on the air from the Castle Point Show on Canvey
Island, GB2RI for Rotary International at the NEC, Birmingham and
GB4WWM from Wellesbourne Wartime Museum.

KP2YL and KP2HC will be back on St. Croix until 30 June. Listen for
them using CW and SSB on 160 to 6m. Please note that June is the 6m DX

DB1JAW will be in Algeria until 20 June. He will be one of the
operators at 7U2ISM but he will also operate as 7X/DB1JAW from Algerian
Sahara. He plans to concentrate on 30, 17 and 12m BPSK31, with activity
also on 40m as well as some SSB on 10, 15, 17 and 20m. QSL direct only
via his home call.

PF4T will be active as 8Q7TB from Embudu in the Maldives until 24 June.
He will operate SSB on 40 and 20m. QSL direct via his home call or via
PA0LEY for the bureau. A log search will be available at

5J0BV will be the callsign to be used by Dennis, K7BV from San Andres,
which is IOTA reference NA-033. Dates are 18 to 29 June and the QSL
route is via K7BV for direct cards. Dennis will concentrate on 6m, but
he may also be QRV on the HF bands. Further information at

John, KB4CRT will be active as VP2MRT from Montserrat, which is IOTA
reference NA-103 until 21 June. He plans to operate CW, SSB and maybe
PSK. QSL via KB4CRT.

Alex, W5YDX will be active holiday style as VP9/W5YDX from Bermuda
until 24 June. He expects to operate mainly on 20 and 17m SSB. QSL via
home call, direct only.

The Worked All Britain 50MHz Phone contest takes place today, 14 June,
from 0900 to 1500UTC. The exchange is report serial number and WAB
square. Contestants are encouraged to know their locator square to
enable them to exchange details with those in the RSGB Backpackers
event. Rules and logsheets are available from the Contest Manager,
G0BFJ, QTHR or from the WAB website www.worked-all-britain.co.uk.

The ANARTS WW RTTY contest is still taking place today, 14 June. Using
the bands between 3.5 and 28MHz, the exchange is signal report, UTC and
CQ Zone.

Sunday 14 June is a busy day for amateur radio. Between 0900 and 1600
is the Practical Wireless 144MHz QRP Contest. Using all modes on the
band the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.

Between 0900 and 1300 it's the RSGB 144MHz Backpackers Contest. Using
all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.

16 June sees the RSGB 1.3GHz and 2.3GHz Activity Contest taking place
between 1900 and 2130. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report,
serial number and locator.

On 18 June the RSGB 80m Club Championship takes place between 1900 and
2030. Using SSB, the exchange is signal report and serial number.

20 and 21 June is the All Asia CW event. It's always good fun and an
opportunity to work some JA stations. Don't forget to look on 7MHz
around sunset because there could be some big signals from the east, as
well as later on during the evening and night. Using all bands between
1.8 and 28MHz, the exchange is signal report and the operator's age.
Ladies may send 00 if they wish.

The RSGB 50MHz Trophy takes place next weekend between 1400 and 1400.
Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number and
locator.

Sunday 21 June sees the RSGB 50MHz Backpackers Contest taking place
between 1000 and 1400. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report,
serial number and locator.

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 1st to the 7th
of June, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 8th of June.

The sunspot group that appeared on the 31st of May survived until the
6th June. At its peak in contained 13 sunspots. Solar activity was very
low. However, the group produced six B class solar flares and numerous
A class flares. Solar activity increases to low when a C class solar
flares takes place. Solar flux levels declined from 73 units on the 1st
to 69 by the 6th. The average was 71 units. The 90 day solar flux
average on the 7th was 69, that's one unit down on last week. On the
1st X-ray flux levels increased to A1.3 units but then declined to
below the minimum reporting level, where they had been since the
beginning of April last year. Geomagnetic activity was quiet everyday
and the average was Ap 5 units. Solar wind data from the ACE spacecraft
saw solar wind speeds vary between 280 and 350 kilometres per second.
Particle densities were low everyday. Bz varied between minus and plus
6 nanoTeslas throughout.

And finally the solar forecast. This week solar activity is expected to
be at very low levels. Over recent weeks there as been a slight
increase in the number of visible sunspots. Will that continue this
week? Solar flux levels are still expected to be around the 70 mark for
most of the week. Geomagnetic activity should be quiet with the Ap
index in single figures everyday. MUFs during daylight hours at equal
latitudes should be about 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north.
The darkness hour lows should be around 10MHz. Paths this week to South
America should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent
success rate of around 25MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90
per cent success rate will be about 20MHz. The best time to try this
path will be between 1500 and 2100 hours UTC. Sporadic-E should take
place on most days with openings maybe taking place up to 144MHz during
the more intense openings.

NEWS FOR NORTHERN IRELAND The GB2RS News Service is looking for
volunteer news readers in Northern Ireland. The 10am reading on
144.250MHz USB is being discontinued this Sunday because Jim Henry,
GI0DVU of Lisburn is unable to continue as a sole newsreader. Two
replacement readers are needed urgently. Furthermore, the 10.30am news
reading on 3650kHz LSB collapsed some time ago, and at least two
volunteers are needed if it is to be reinstated. If you are an RSGB
member and might consider helping with these news readings, then please
