5H, TANZANIA (2009 Scout Jamboree). The 2009 Tanzania National Scout's
Jamboree will be held at Mbeya Region, southern part of Tanzania, between
June 12-19th. Look for 5H3TSA to be on air on 20 meters and 15 meters
(14290 and 21360 kHz). QSL direct only to 5H3TSA.

5R8, MADAGASCAR (Update). Texas DX Society (TDXS) member, Wayne, W5KDJ,
will be active as 5R8KD from Antananarivo between July 4-17th. Activity
will be on 160-6 meters using CW and RTTY. Wayne will also be active in
the IARU Contest (July 11-12th) and operate from the shack of 5R8FU
using his new TH-11-DX. QSL via his home callsign. Online log search
will be available. Logs will be uploaded to LoTW and eQSL.

9H, MALTA. Giorgio, IV3EPO, will be active as 9H3EP between June 23-29th.
Activity will be on 40-10 meters, mainly CW. QSL via IV3EPO, by the

A35, TONGA (Update). Paul, A35RK, on Wednesday, June 10th, informed
OPDX that "I have received many requests for 'skeds', for several bands
and modes. Unfortunately, I am not able to accommodate anyone at this
time. I'm too busy, and I am unable to 'promise' to keep any sort of
radio schedule at the moment." Pauls states, "My internet connection is
intermittent, and I often cannot respond to incoming E-mail. Please ask
your readers NOT to send any more requests for skeds. I will be here in
Vava'u (OC-064) for about 2 more weeks, and then will return to Ha'apai
(OC-169). In the meantime, I will be as active on the air as I can be."

ANTARCTICA EXPEDITION PLANNED. Operators Jean Pierre/ON7ZM and Mehdi/F5PFP
are planning an expedition to Antarctica that will probably take place
during the Arctic summer of 2011-2012. Mehdi states, "It could be a 6-7
weeks expedition in a way to reach some old bases and refuges which are
situated below the Antarctic polar circle, (Loubet coast, Fallieres coast,
Marguerite Bay, and we hope one accessible island at least belonging to
Alexander Island group)." If someone wishes to join them as an operator

C2, NAURU (Reminder). Dani, EA4ATI/9M2TI, and possibly other operators
are expected to activate Nauru in the Pacific (refer to OPDX.894) as
C21TI between June 16-26th. Activity will be on all HF bands including
60m and 6m. The suggested frequencies mentioned (as of now) a
CW - 1825.5, 3505, 7005, 10110, 14025, 18075, 21025, 24895 and 28025
SSB - 1825.5, 3799, 5371.5, 7065, 14195, 18145, 21295, 24945 and 28495 kHz
6m - 50.115 MHz (CW/SSB)

CE0Y, EASTER ISLAND (SA-001). Operators Stan/SQ8X and Vicky/SV2KBS are
planning to be active as CE0Y/homecall from here between October 31st
and November 15th. They are looking for one or two operators to join
them on this operation. Plans are to have two stations on the air. They
understand that Easter Island (SA-001) is not on most wanted lists, but
there is a demand by some European stations to work CE0Y (this will be
their main goal). More details will be forthcoming.

CQ NEWS...... (Press Releases via Richard Moseson, W2VU, Editor of CQ
Amateur Radio):
* CQWW Adds New "Xtreme" Category (Hicksville, NY - June 10th) - A new
"Xtreme" category is being added to the CQ World Wide DX Contest to
encourage the development of new technologies in amateur radio communi-
cations in general and contesting in particular. According to CQ WW
Contest Director Bob Cox, K3EST, this new category has been established
to allow amateurs to participate in the CQ WW contest while experiment-
ing creatively with Internet-linked stations and other new technologies.
"Contesters are often early adopters of new technologies," said Cox,
"and we want to encourage this as a continuation of ham radio's pioneer-
ing spirit. However, many of these technologies are not currently
permitted in any existing CQ WW categories. The Xtreme category will
allow these stations to compete, but only with other stations using
new technologies."
Scoring for logs submitted in the new category will be a mix of
standard CQ WW scoring plus a more subjective score for level of
innovation and originality, as determined by a panel of judges on the
CQ WW Contest Committee. The highest-scoring entries in the single-
operator and multi-operator categories will win the John Kanzius,
K3TUP, Memorial plaques, sponsored by Tim Duffy, K3LR. Kanzius, a
prominent contester, was also an experimenter who developed a potential-
ly ground-breaking approach to cancer treatment in the course of his
own, ultimately unsuccessful, battle with the disease.
The new category will take effect with the 2009 CQ World Wide DX
Contest this fall. It was introduced to contesters at the 2009 Dayton
Hamvention and received an immediate positive response. Complete

* "CQ" Propagation Editor Challenges Revised Solar Cycle (Hicksville,
NY - June 10th) - "CQ" magazine's Propagation Editor is challenging
the accuracy of the newest predictions on Solar Cycle 24. The revised
prediction, issued in late May by a panel of solar experts, suggests
a weak sunspot cycle with a peak in 2013. But "CQ" Propagation Editor
Tomas Hood, NW7US, is asking "How Credible Are These 'Experts'?"
In an online commentary posted on the "CQ" magazine website, Hood
notes that this same group of so-called "experts" has issued multiple
predictions for this cycle already, all of which they now say are wrong,
and asks why we should believe they're right this time.
"How much credibility should we grant to the panel of solar re-
searchers and scientists that again releases a speculative prediction
of the new Solar Cycle?" Hood asks, noting that NASA's lead represent-
ative on the panel says "it turns out that none of our models were
totally correct."
Hood points out that, while the sun itself is millions of years old,
scientists have been tracking solar activity for just a few hundred
years. "In my view," he says, "it is pretty arrogant to postulate that
mankind has any real understanding and handle on what the sun might do
next."
"No one can postulate with any credibility just how intense the new
cycle will be because there's no direct correlation between this solar
minimum and any regular pattern of past minimums," Hood notes, adding,
"If none of the models are totally correct, how are they making this
current prediction with such dismal expectations? I'm not holding my
breath in favor of supporting any of the predictions at this point."
He also points out that there are already signs of "an awakening
Solar Cycle 24," and encourages hams to "enjoy the unique propagation
opportunities currently presenting themselves during this quiet phase,"
and to "prepare now for whatever the sun will do by honing your radio
skills...."

E51, SOUTH COOK ISLANDS (Update). Nigel, G4KIU, now active as E51SC from
the Island of Rarotonga (OC-013), was quite active this past weekend
on RTTY on 20 meters and PSK31. He moved to the South Cook Islands and
is expected to also be active on 80-10 meters mainly on SSB, RTTY, PSK31
and with some CW. Nigel announced this past week he will be an entry in
the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th) as a Single-Op. Direct QSLs are to
be sent to: Nigel Peacock, P.O. Box 880, Rarotonga, Cook Islands (via
New Zealand). Please send a SAE, plus 2 USDs or 2 new style IRCs. Any
direct cards received without the above items will be returned via the
Bureau. Bureau QSLs go to: E51SC via G4KIU/RSGB. **IMPORTANT** There is
no QSL Bureau in the Cook Islands. Cards without G4KIU on them will NOT
be received. Please "DO NOT" send direct cards to any G4KIU address in
England - they will NOT arrive. All E51SC contacts will be loaded to
LoTW about once a week. He does not use e.QSL at all.

F, FRANCE (LH Op). Operators Michel/HB9DLO, Pascal/HB9DWR and Pierre-Yves/
HB9OMI will be active as F/HB9LH/p from the Lac du Bourget lighthouse
(ARLHS FRA-827, DEP. 73, CP 73100, DDCF 7303) in Phare d'Aix-les-Bains,
between 0800z, June 20th and 1600z, June 21st. Activity will be on 3670,
7070 and 14270 kHz (+/- QRM) SSB, and CW and/or other bands according

FT/G, GLORIOSO ISLAND (Update). Didier, F5OGL, Glorioso 2009 team leader,
announced this past week that the Glorioso 2009 team gathered at Frank's,
F4AJQ, QTH last weekend (June 6-7th), with some F6KOP team members. During
these two days the whole time was spent tuning the antennas, teaching
DXpeditioners about their settings, and to coordinating all of the packages.
The final setup was 4 complete stations (each with at least a 800 watts PA)
that will be shipped to Glorioso's main island. They plan to be active
as much as possible during the 24 hour day. Their antenna system will
consist of 2 Spiderbeams for 20/15/10m and another for 30/17/12m. They
will also have an Inverted L for 160m, one V10, one V80 and one HF2V
for 80-40m. Some other vertical elements were packed as well as a K9AY
array receiving system. A 6 meters station will monitor the Magic band
but only into a G5RV antenna. The complete crew (and they hope it will
not change) consists of: Freddy/F5IRO, Yves/F5PRU, Jean-Marc/F5RQQ,
Sylvain/F5TLN, Philippe/F4EGS and three SIRPA agents: Florence (YL)
journalist, Yann (director and cameraman) and Didier (cameraman and
sound engineer). They would like to thank Jeff/F6AOJ, Floyd/N5FG, Toshi/
JA1ELY, Mike/UA0ME and Lee/ZL2AL for being their pilot stations. It was
mentioned that they would also like to thank Floyd/N5FG and Jeff/F6AOJ
for their big efforts in the back office. For the first time the callsign
to be used for the Glorioso operation will be under the new French
Antarctic and Austral Territories (TAAF) regulation and is expected to
be FT5GA."
ADDED NOTE: As of 2005, the "Iles Eparses", Gloriosos, Tromelin, Juan da
Nova and Europa Islands are now put under the new TAAF authority. All
future callsigns, for these areas, will be issued with the following
prefixes:
FR/G becomes FT#G Gloriosos FR/T becomes FT#T, Tromelin
FR/E becomes Ft#E, Europa FR/J becomes FT#J, Juan da Nova

No changes for FT#W (Crozet), FT#Y (Terre Adelie), FT#X (Kerguelen)
and FT#Z (Amsterdam).

GB2, ENGLAND (LH Op). Members of the "Bittern DX'ers" will activate for
the 8th time "Blakeney Mariner's Light" GB2BML for the ILLW 2008, on the
weekend of August 15-16th. Reference numbers a ENG-292 and WLOTA 1841).
Activity will be on all HF bands using CW, SSB, RTTY, SSTV, PSK31, and

HG400, HUNGARY (Special Event). Sanyi, HA0HV, is currently active using
the special callsign HG400HV through the end of the year (December 31st).
Activity is to celebrate his town's 400th anniversary, which was estab-
lished by the "hajduk" who called their settlement "Hajduboszormeny".
The town Hajduboszormeny is in eastern Hungary with a population of
approximately 32,000 people. Sanyi expects to operate on all HF bands
plus 6 and 2 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. QSL via HA0HV,

IOTA NEWS...........................
AS-117. (Special Event/WLOTA Op) Members of the Tokyo Dental College RC
(JA1YUC) will activate the special event callsign 8J120TDC/2
from Mikomoto Island (WLOTA-2126) between July 26-28th. Activity
will mostly be on 40/20/17/15 meters using CW and SSB which
will include an entry in the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th).
Special event callsign is to celebrate the 120th anniversary
of the Tokyo Dental College. Mikomoto Island lighthouse WLOTA
number will be activated for the first time. The lighthouse
was also selected by the International Association of Lighthouse
Authorities (IALA) as one of 100 lighthouses particularly
important historically in various countries of the world. QSL

EU-008. Michael, DL6MHW, will be active as MM/DL6MHW from the Ilse of
Mull, Scotland, during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th).

EU-010. Members of the Workington and District Amateur Radio Club will
once again be active as MS0WRC from Crannag Cottage, NE Coast
Isle of Barra (IOSA OH-11, SCOTIA HI-02, WAB NF70, WLOTA 3126),
Outer Hebrides, from September 26th to October 3rd. Operators
mentioned a Steve/G0MTD, Paul/M1PAF, Mark/M0WCR and Glyn/
M3XUH. Activity will be on all HF bands but mainly 80/40/20/17
meters SSB and VHF/UHF FM. The group also plans to travel around
the island (active as mobile or portable) and possibly activate

EU-064. Operators Jean-Michel/F1UGV, Nicolas/F4BJW, Jean-Marc/F5NLR,

the Dumet Island (DIFM AT 018), June 20-21st. Activity will
be on the HF and VHF bands, propagation permitting, using

EU-105. Theo, ON4ATW, informs OPDX: "The Rockall 2009 group will
participate in the IOTA contest from Ile de Batz, Finistere
North. To recover from the trip to Rockall and to start
preparation for a new attempt, the crew and the support team
will join the DXpedition class in a Multi-Operator, Low-Power
effort. Team members include ON3DX, ON4AHF, ON4ATW, ON4HIL,
ON4IA, ON6CC, ON6LEO, ON6NL, ON6ZU and ON7YT. The call used
will be F/OT2A and QSL will go via the home call."

EU-128. Sebastian, DL1AXX, will be active as DL1AXX/P from the small
Island of Warder (O-32 for the German Island Award), between
July 11-18th. Activity will be on 80/40/30 meters CW only.

EU-176. Jorgen, SM3CXS, will once again be active from Grimskar Island
(Grid JP81) as SG3U, June 18-21st. Activity will be limited to
his spare time, but look for him on 40-6 meters using CW and

NA-055. Mike, W2IY, will be active as W2IY/1 from Mt. Desert, Maine,
during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th). QSL via W2IY,

NA-185. Operators Mike/K9AJ and Bruce/KD6WW will team-up and be active
as homecall/VY0 from the Thomson Island (CISA New One!), the
Canadian offshore Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, starting during their
local Friday evening, July 31st through their local Monday
morning, August 3rd. Using two stations, look for them on or
near the usual IOTA frequencies using CW and SSB. QSL via their

OC-130. Maarten "Moj", PA3GZU, will be active as DU9/PA3GZU from
Mindanao Island (WLOTA 2803), July 6th through August 1st.
Activity will be holiday style on the HF bands with low

JT, MONGOLIA. Giampiero, "Peter", I5NOC, will be active as JT1NOC between
now and June 29th. Activity will be on 80-10 meters, possibly 6m, using
CW, SSB and PSK. He was heard this past weekend on 20 meters CW and PSK31.

NZART MEMORIAL CONTEST. This special contest is on the air to commemorate
those from our ranks who lost their lives in World War II. The contest is
open to all operators and it is held the first Saturday and Sunday evenings
in July. A total of six operating periods; three each evening of one hour

OE100, AUSTRIA (Special Event). Members of the ICOM Radio Club Vienna
and the OVSV (Austrian IARU) will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the
Technical Museum Vienna by activating the special callsign OE100TMW
between June 17-21st, for 100 hours continuously on HF and VHF. During
this 100 hours, the Museum will be also open nonstop as they operate
this "radio-marathon". Every licensed amateur is invited to come to the

OH0, ALAND ISLAND. Operators Jukka/OH6LI and Kim/OH6KZP will be active
as OH0V from Geta (EU-002) during the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th)
as a Multi-Single entry. QSL via OH6LI.

PACIFIC DXPEDITION/TOUR. Gerben, PG5M, informs OPDX that he will be
activating three DXCC entities in the Pacific between September 6-27th.
His schedule is as follows:
September 6-7th: Fiji (OC-016); prefix 3D2
September 8-14th: Tuvalu (OC-015); Callsign will be T2G
September 15-16th: Fiji; prefix 3D2
September 17-23rd: Tarawa Island (OC-017), W. Kiribati; Callsign is T30G
September 24-27th: Fiji; prefix 3D2
The callsign is not known for Fiji, but he has requested 3D2G. This will
be an ultra light solo DXpedition and CW only. He will use an Elecraft K3,

to all the direct QSL cards except for those who are waiting for cards
for: OA0/FT5YJ (Machu Picchu) and FT5YJ/p (Omega Island). He states,

with an expedition going on (ZK2V), I have over 100 IRCs thus far, and
they need to be moved out while they're still good...... I'll be selling

MM0DFV/p and GM0WRR/p were expected to be active this past weekend from
the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park (WFF reference number is

station's location was at the Loch Lomond shore in the Rowardennan Forest
(WAB NS39, Stirling Council Area). EU Area is SC30 for the EPC awards.

was active as portable caboose for the AC&J (ACJR) Railroad's 25th
anniversary from Jefferson, OH.

HV50VR STATUS/QSL MANAGER'S NEW CALLSIGN. A new callsign for the HV50VR
QSL Manager has been announced and it is IV3KKW. The address is still
the same since February 2008, but Alex changed his callsign in June

Alex informs us that as of today (June 9th) he has no QSL cards pending

SILENT KEY. Glenn, K3SWZ, informs OPDX that Tony Malesic, K3BHL (ex-CP1JV,
XH8HJ and HI8XDF), suffered a massive stroke at his home in Harrisburg, PA,
on Friday, June 5th, and became a Silent Key (SK) two days later at the
age of 67 in a local hospital. He was retired from the State Dept. and
lived in the Washington D.C. area during his last years with D.O.S. before
retirement. His health had been failing over the last few years and he was
inactive in Ham Radio. Tony provided the first RTTY QSOs ever from CP1
and XW8 during his tours there and was most active during his 3 year
tour in HI8. OPDX and its readers would like to send out our deepest
sympathy to Tony's family and friends.

SV9, Crete. Ron, WB2GAI, will be active as SV9/WB2GAI/P between August
21st and October 5th. This will be his third Dxpedition to Crete. Ron
will be celebrating his 50th year in ham radio. Activity, as always, will
be on CW and on 80-17 meters. All QSLs via the Bureau.

T7, SAN MARINO (6m Op). Members of the Amateurs Radio Republic of San
Marino (A.R.R.S.M.) will activate their club station T70A on 6 meters
June 20-21st, primarily looking to give those who need it for a new
country on the band. Operators Filippo/IK4ZHH, Giorgio/IZ4AKS, Max/IZ4DPV,
Michele/IZ4GWE, Stefano/IW2MJQ and Vittorio/I4YSS will compose the team
that operates from the club station. They will use 3 antennas beamed in

TO7, MAYOTTE (AF-027). Willi, DJ7RJ, is expected to announce plans to be
active as TO7RJ from Mayotte soon. QSL via DJ7RJ. More details are

TZ, MALI (Update). Ed, W0SD, updates OPDX that the TZ6EI DXpedition by
operators Ed/W0SD, Holly/N0QJM and Arliss/W7XU will be primarily on six
meters, June 26th through July 5th. The group will be on 50.103 MHz. Ed
states, "We have our TZ6EI license and VISAs in hand and our necessary
immunizations. We will be bringing backup equipment and have permission
to operate from the roof of the Hotel Mande in Bamako. There will be
RTTY operation concurrent with the six meter operation. There will be
CW and SSB operations at night after six meter sporadic E is over. For
HF, we are planning to operate on 30, 20 and 17 meters. The complete
details are on the web site." QSL via W7XU. DX QSL cards need 2.00 USDs
and a SAE or current IRCs. USA cards should have an SASE. Contributions
to defray expenses can be sent with the QSL card. The logs will eventually

UR, UKRAINE. Members of Ternopil Amateur Radio Club operated on June
12-14th as UR4BZB/p from Medobory National Preserve (URFF-015=2C URDA

V3, BELIZE. Per, LA5OPA, will be active as V31NP from Ambergris Cay
(NA-073) between July 26th and August 12th. Activity will be mostly on
20 meters SSB and PSK31. He will also operate on the other bands, if
propagation is open to Europe. Per will be using 100 watts with a
Buddipole antenna system. QSL via LA5OPA, by the Bureau or direct.

WP4, PUERTO RICO (LH Op). Members of the Caribbean Amateur Radio Group
(WP4CRG) will be active as W4L from the Arecibo Lighthouse (ARLHS PUR-001,
TWLHD WLH KP4-001), Puerto Rico (NA-099, USI PR-006S, WLOTA 2802) between
1200z, August 14th and 2359z August 23rd. This activity will include the
International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend (ILLW, August 15-16th). Look
for them on the following frequncies:
SSB - 7150, 14225, 18122 and 28350 kHz
SSTV - 14230 kHz

YU, SERBIA (Special Prefixes). Look for Serbian operators to use the
following special prefixes YT25, YU25, YU2009, YT2009, YU09 and YT09
between June 12th and July 12th. Activity is to help promote the 25th
Summer Universiade Belgrade 2009 sporting event (July 1-12th). This is
an Olympic type sport competition with 9000 students from 140 countries
competing in 15 sports and 208 disciplines. The official Universiade
