The news headlines

* Emergency comms in Poland
* More countries get access to 7MHz frequencies
* IARU Region 3 ARDF Championships cancelled

Following recent flooding in the South-Western part of Poland, and a
continuing flood threat to the region, the DASR emergency group is
reporting that 3760kHz may be used for emergency communication. Please
keep this frequency clear for emergency traffic. For further
information on the DASR emergency group, check out www.dasr.za.pl.

Belarus has gained access to the extended 40m band. In the 7.1 - 7.2MHz
frequency range it is allowed to use SSB and CW with 500W max and, as
always, up to 1kW in contests under a special authorisation. In the
same decision of the State Commission for Radio Frequencies that was
dated May 14 but just recently released, the 160m band has also been
extended for Belarus amateurs. The frequencies accessible are now 1.810
to 2.000MHz. On 27 June, the French administration announced that 7.1 *
7.2MHz will be available to the amateur service. Unfortunately another
signature is needed before publication.

The Eighth IARU Region 3 ARDF Championships, originally scheduled for
29 October to 3 November 2009 near Bangkok, Thailand, have been
cancelled due to concerns for the safety and convenience of
participants. This announcement was made on June 26 by JA1HQG, chair of
the IARU Region 3 ARDF Committee. In his announcement, he added that
there was insufficient time to make arrangements to hold the
championships in another country of Region 3 this year.

Plans for the National Hamfest in October are going well. In addition
to those traders already mentioned in the July RadCom, the RSGB are
pleased to say that bhi, Sandpiper and JBT Trading have all been added
to the growing list of traders who have confirmed they will be
attending the event.

The Mid Cornwall Beacon and Repeater Group would like to thank all
those who gave reports for the simplex tests that were run on 14 June.
The tests were conducted using the new antenna and feeder at the new
site. Over 100 reports were received, which showed that the new antenna
and feeder gave consistently better reports throughout Cornwall and
Devon compared to the existing GB3NC set up. The GB3NC repeater will
therefore be moved to the new site. It will close down following the
RSGB News and round up on Sunday 5 July at approximately 10.30am. A
full repeater service will resume by Saturday 11 July in time for the
RSGB News and the Cornwall Radio Amateur Club Rally on Sunday 12 July.

There is still time to register for the South Yorkshire Microwave
Convention which takes place at Finningley Amateur Radio Club, near
Doncaster, over the weekend 11 and 12 July. Attendance is free. For

as possible if you intend to stay overnight and/or attend the Saturday

Dundee Amateur Radio Club was recently awarded a grant of nearly £3,000
by the National Lottery under the Awards for all Scheme. This Grant has
been used to purchase the equipment required to provide a D-Star
digital UHF radio repeater for radio amateurs from Dundee, Angus and
North Fife. Full information and coverage of this D-Star Repeater can

The WA1ZMS Trans-Atlantic spotting beacon on 144.285MHz has just had an
increase in power. This CW beacon is GPS locked and the antenna is
beaming at 60 degrees from IARU grid locator FM07fm. While it has yet
to be heard in the British Isles, its owner Brian Justin, WA1ZMS says
that given the right conditions, the signal may make it across the
pond. More about this experiment is online at

Chesterfield Rally Team is holding an Advanced exam on 7 August from
6.30pm. There are still a few places available. Those who wish to book
a place can do so before the closing date on 21 July and the
application must include your fee. An RSGB Representative will be on

The York Radio Rally takes place today, July 5th, at the York
Racecourse in Knavesmire. There will be trade stands, a Bring & buy as

The 46th Cornish Mobile Rally takes place at Penair School, Truro,
Cornwall, TR1 1TN on 12 July. There will be trade stands, a Bring & Buy
as well as the usual catering. Doors open at 10.15 for disabled

The McMichael Rally and Boot Sale also takes place on 12 July at
Reading Rugby Club, just off the A4 east of Reading. Entry is £2 and
there's plenty of car parking as well as trade stands, special interest

The Norfolk ARC Barford Radio Rally will be held on 12 July at Barford,
which is 9 miles south west of Norwich and close to A11 and A47. Doors

Now the news of special events

Pontefract and District Amateur Radio Society is marking Pontefract
Liquorice Festival 2009 with GB0PLF, which is on the air now until
Liquorice Day on 12th July. This will be the fourth year PDARS has run
a station for the Liquorice Festival and the attractive GB0PLF QSL
cards issued in previous years have become quite famous.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing and Neil
Armstrong's famous one small step, GB1SS will be on the air from 1st
July until 20th July. This follows on from last year's GB0BUZZ when
Pontefract and District Amateur Radio Society had a visit from Buzz
Aldrin himself. GB1SS will be on the air on the anniversary - including
2017UTC on 20th July, the very moment of touchdown - and they have a
special commemorative QSL card ready for all contacts made.

The Brickfields Amateur Radio Society will be active at Havenstreet
Railway Station on the Isle of Wight under the callsign GB0FLB on 5
July. They will be mainly on 80m and 40m SSB and 2m FM. The station is
being run as part of a 1940s WWII commemoration weekend, set against
the backdrop of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. QSL cards will be sent
via the RSGB bureau to all stations worked. SWLs are advised to QSL
direct via the club callsign GX0BAR.

GB4QES will be on the air on 11 July from the Queen Elizabeth Show near
Petersfield.

On Sunday 12 July the Isle of Man ARS will be running GB5LB the second
in its series of Life Boat station activations. Working from Port Erin
lifeboat station, operations will be centred around 3.7MHz. A special
QSL card is available; QSL direct to The Boat House, Lime Street, Port
St Mary, Isle of Man IM9 5EF. Include a self-addressed envelope and an
IRC because British stamps are not valid on the Isle of Man. A special
Award is available if you contact GB5LB at all five of its venues.

VE3MOON was approved by Industry Canada for use in celebration of the
40th anniversary of the landing of men on the moon on 20 July 1969. It
will be in use from 14 July until 27 July. eQSL or paper cards can be
sent to VE3OIJ either via the Bureau or Direct.

And now the HF DX news compiled from 425 DX News and other sources.

Following on from the recent success of their Tan Hill activation
GB1TAN, and in conjunction with the National Trust, a team from
Wakefield and District Radio Society will be activating Holy Island off
the Northumbrian coast for the 3rd year running from Friday 10 July
until Monday 13 July using the callsign GB1HI. Further details are
available on QRZ.com.

Keep an ear open for Madagascar as 5R8KD will be on the air until 17
July. His operation will be on 160 to 6m using CW and RTTY. Logs will
be uploaded to LoTW and eQSL and an on-line log search will be
available. Paper QSLs should go via his home callsign W5KDJ.

Members Portuguese Navy Amateur Radio will activate several CT
Lighthouses. On 11 July CR1NRA will be on the air using SSB and CW on
10, 15, 20, 40 and 80m. Then on 8 July, CR6NRA will be active on SSB,
CW and digital modes on 10, 15, 20, 40 and 80m. www.qrz.com/cr1nra.

The French military amateur radio operators who will be active from Ile
de la Grande in the Glorioso group, AF-011, on 9 to 28 July are F4EGS,
F5IRO, F5PRU, F5RQQ and F5TLN. Their trip to Glorioso is primarily a
military operation, not a DXpedition, but they will have four complete
stations. They plan to be QRV during both the IARU HF World
Championship and the IOTA Contest. QSL via F5OGL, direct or bureau.

Members of the Strumblehead DX and Contest Group have now sealed the
final permission to activate Ramsey Island, off the West Wales coast,
from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds who own the island.
They will be active from 1800, 24 July until 1400, 27 July. Activity
will include an entry in the RSGB IOTA Contest (July 25-26th). They
will be active using the club callsign MC0SHL for the whole duration of
the operation and using MW9W in the contest. Their activity will be on
all bands from 80-10 meters using SSB. There is also be some 30m RTTY
planned by G1VDP if the other guys allow him, with participation in the
last 80m Club Championships DATA section.

Today, 5 July, sees the closing hours of the RSGB VHF NFD. It finishes
at 1400, using all modes on the bands between 50MHz and 1.3GHz. The
exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.

Today, 5 July, it's the RSGB 144MHz Backpackers Contest between 1100
and 1500. Using all modes on the 144MHz band, the exchange is signal
report, serial number and locator.

6 July is the RSGB 80m Club Championship between 1900 and 2030. It's
the CW leg and the exchange is signal report and serial number.

7 July sees the RSGB 144MHz UK Activity Contest and Club Championship
taking place between 1900 and 2130. Using all mode the exchange is
signal report, serial number and locator.

Don't forget to listen out for GB7HQ, which is the RSGB's headquarters
station during the IARU World HF Championship which will take place on
11 and 12 July 2009. Since 2003 when GB5HQ/GB7HQ started up, over
88,000 contacts have been made during the contest by the headquarters
station. So, look out for GB7HQ during the contest and work them on as
many bands and modes as you can.

On 14 July, the RSGB 432MHz UK Activity Contest takes place from 1900
to 2130. Using all modes, the exchange is signal report, serial number
and locator.

On 19 July, there will be an Amateur Radio DF event at Crompton Moor,
Oldham, grid reference SD951100. There will be 3.5 and 144MHz events.

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 22nd to the 28th
of June, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 29th of June.

Two sunspot groups were visible on the 22nd, however, they had both
disappeared by the 25th leaving the solar disc spotless for the
remainder of the period. Solar flux levels varied little and averaged
67 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 28th was 70 units,
that's the same level as last week. X-ray flux levels remained below
the minimum reporting level everyday. After last weeks comment about
the disappearance of coronal holes two coronal hole disturbances took
place, the first on the 24th with an Ap index of 19 units and the
second on the 28th with an Ap of 11. The coronal hole disturbance on
the 19th would appear to have come from a newly developed coronal hole.
The second, was from the well established coronal hole that as been
visible for the last two years which as increased in size on this
rotation. The average was Ap 7 units. Solar wind data from the ACE
spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase from a very slow 250
kilometres per second on the 24th to 450 by the 28th. Particle
densities were low except for an increase to 20 particles per cubic
centimetre on the 24th and 28 on the 28th. Bz on the quiet days varied
between minus 1 and plus 3 nanoTeslas and between minus 20 and plus 17
during the disturbances.

And finally the solar forecast. This week the solar disc could be
spotless on some days. Solar activity is expected to be at very low
levels. Solar flux levels should be around the 70 mark for most of the
week. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be quiet everyday with the Ap
index in single figures everyday. MUFs during daylight hours at equal
latitudes should be about 19MHz for the south and 16MHz for the north.
The darkness hour lows should be around 10MHz. Paths this week to Japan
should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate
of about 18MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent
success rate will be around 15MHz. The best time to try this path will
be between 08000 and 1300 hours UTC. Sporadic-E should take place some
days with the most favoured times around mid morning and again during
the late afternoon and early evening period. Saying that, recently,
openings have taken place in the dead of night. Loosely connected with
the sunspot cycle is the observation of noctilucent clouds. These
clouds form at a height of around 75 to 85 kilometres above ground,
much higher than cirrus clouds which are about 8 kilometres high.
Noctilucent clouds can be seen by observers at latitudes between 50 to
65 degrees. This puts the UK ideally placed to see them. They occur
during summer, from mid-May to mid- August. They are very faint and
tenuous, and can only be observed when the sun is between 6 and 16
degrees below the horizon. It has been suggested that these clouds are
more common during the years of sunspot minimum and that there maybe a
connection with the formation of Sporadic-E. For more information on
Noctilucent clouds, Wikipedia is a good place to start.

coast of Scotland that the long-established 80 metre news reading at
11.30 was in danger of terminating because GM3HGA and GM3VEY in
Aberdeen were stepping down. No RSGB members have yet come forward to
