The news headlines

Encouraging response to RSGB questionnaire

Church broadcasts affecting 28MHz

4th Buildathon planned

The survey of amateur radio within the UK was formally launched last
weekend at the National Hamfest with a personal questionnaire for all
radio amateurs. In its first week nearly 600 questionnaires have been
completed. 69% of those completing the questionnaire have been RSGB
members, but it is encouraging to note that 18% were from radio amateurs
whose membership of the RSGB had lapsed and the remainder had never been
members of the National Society. The survey will be active until 31st
December and all radio amateurs are encouraged to participate as well as
give help to those who find difficulty in accessing the internet or
using computers. There will be an opportunity to complete the
Questionnaire at this weekend's RSGB Convention. The survey can be found
online at www.rsgb.org/survey.

The Irish Radio Transmitters Society has asked amateurs and SWLs to keep
a listening watch around 28.265MHz FM as there have been incursions by
churches on this frequency heard throughout Europe at up to S9+20dB.
Recently there has also been a church in the Dublin area transmitting on
28.030MHz in the CW portion of the band. Please send details of names
etc used so IRTS can try to identify locations and report them to ComReg
for investigation. All information should be sent to Ger McNamara,
EI4GXB, the IRTS IARUMS coordinator, by email to .

The 4th Bath Buildathon is planned for Saturday 8 January. The project

Bath city centre between 7 and 9pm every Thursday. Enquiries for both
the Intermediate course and the Buildathon should be directed to Steve,
G0FUW, on 01225 464394 evenings 7-9pm, except Thursdays, or via email to

under their individual callsigns. Most activity will be SSB, although
they may be able to do some CW, PSK31 and RTTY. The QSL manager for the
expedition is GI4FUM. Further information at www.3da0ss.net.

Arnaud, F4FOO and the F6KJG Radio Club will be active as TM40FO from the
Foret d'Orient Regional Nature Park on 15 to 17 October. QSL via F4FOO,
either direct or via the bureau.

Now the contest news

On 12 October, the 432MHz UKAC takes place between 1900 and 2130UTC.
Using all modes the exchange will be signal report, serial number and
locator.

14 October sees the CW leg of the 80m Club Sprint taking place between
1900 and 2030. The exchange is serial number and name.

Next weekend, on 17 October, the second 50MHz Contest takes place from
0900 to 1200UTC. Using all modes, the exchange will be signal report,
serial number and locator.

Advance notice now for the UHF UK Activity Contest on 19 October between
1900 and 2130UTC. Using the 1.3 and 2.3GHz bands, the exchange will be
signal report, serial number and locator.

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 27th of September
to the 3rd of October, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 4th of
October.

The solar disc had spots visible every day, in fact, three groups were
present most days. However, solar activity was very low except for the
28th when a small C class solar flare took place. Solar flux levels
increased from 83 units on the 27th to 91 by the 29th, but then
gradually declined to 80 by the 3rd. The average was 86 units. The 90
day solar flux average on the 3rd was 81, that's one unit up on last
week. X-ray flux levels declined from B1.4 units on the 29th and the
30th to A8.7 by the 3rd. The average was B1.1 units. Geomagnetic
activity was quiet with the Ap index in single figures every day. The
most disturbed was the 28th with an Ap index of 7 units. The average was
Ap 4 units. Solar wind data from the ACE spacecraft saw solar wind
speeds decline from 580 kilometres per second on the 29th to 290 by the
3rd. Particle densities were low throughout. Bz varied between minus 8
and plus nanoTeslas on the 28th and between minus 2 and plus 3 on the
quietest day which was the 30th.

And now the solar forecast. This week the active side of the Sun is
expected to be rotating into view. Solar activity should be mostly very
low but later in the week activity could increase if any C class solar
flares take place. Solar flux levels are expected to increase from
around the 80 mark at first to approaching the 90's towards next
weekend. Geomagnetic activity should be mostly quiet this week with no
coronal holes facing Earth. MUFs during daylight hours at equal
latitudes should be around 24MHz for the south and 21MHz for the north.
Darkness hour lows are expected to be around 10MHz. Paths this week to
South Africa should have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent
success rate of around 31MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90
per cent success rate will be about 25MHz. The best time to try this
path will be between 0900 and 1600 hours.

And that's all for this week from the propagation team.
