(Amateur Radio Examiner) Council has appointed a new NZART ARX as my deputy. Warren Harris ZL2AJ from Hastings has officially accepted the position. He replaces Fred Johnson ZL2AMJ. Warren is also responsible for updating all NZART examination-training material including all that is listed on the NZART web page. If you have any suggestions or queries regarding any technical issue, please contact Warren. Speaking of ARX and all things SMART related. As from 1 October 2010 it is now mandatory should you wish to apply for a new call sign, special event call or secondary call to include a passport photo for inclusion on your new certificate. Subscription Reminder Notices I have produced all subscription reminder letters for those who have yet to pay and wish to take advantage of the $15 rebate before the end of November this year. If you have paid on or after the 15th October, you will receive a reminder notice, please disregard it. For those experiencing problems in paying the full rate before this date, perhaps an easy monthly payment plan of $8 could be a better option. While does mean you will not be entitled to the rebate, it may just give you the opportunity to continue membership with NZART. Lastly...a very special thank you to all those people who took the time to ring or write to me over my recent absence. As always, I am truly humbled by the support I receive as your Association's business manager. Sometimes when you are in a sole charge position, you forget that what you do has far reaching results and while it is only human to only hear about the negatives, there are a considerable number more who remain positive and wish you well. Thank you seems such an insignificant word, but it comes from the heart. Talk soon...Debby ZL2TDM FMTAG NOTES FOR OCTOBER(2) 2010 PROPOSALS ZL2BDI has applied for a 70 centimetre ATV Beacon at Lower Hutt, Topo50 map reference BQ32 575.50 361.93. As the last of the 33 miners who were trapped 2300 feet deep inside the San Jos Mine -- located about 27 miles from the Chilean town of Copiap in the Atacama Desert -- rose to the surface at 0055 UTC on October 14, the world cheered in unison. The miners, who were underground for 69 days -- the longest time ever for miners to be trapped and survive -- all emerged relatively healthy. Amateurs with the Radio Club Copiap, CE1CPI, provided communication support between the authorities and emergency equipment operators inside the San Jose Mine complex, as well as with family of the trapped miners in the complex and authorities in Copiap. From ARRL Weekly Letter 14-OCT-2010 with thanks The Judge Does it With Frequency Following the arrest and comprehensive prosecution of a plane spotter in South Africa's Gauteng, local aviation enthusiasts have been warned that they will need to write an exam and qualify as a radio amateur to legally possess popular air band receivers. Until now nobody has been prosecuted for this offence. Port Elizabeth Amateur Radio Society chairman Ashley Goosen has warned local aviation enthusiasts that they need to be licensed to possess an air band receiver legally. Plane spotter Julian Swift was arrested earlier this year under the South African Telecommunication Act for the illegal possession of an air band receiver and for listening in on several radio frequencies. They are not just determined to throw the book at the spotter, they are still writing a telephone directory and War and Peace to throw at him, just last week the state amended the charge sheet to include every frequency on his receiver!
