Tropical cyclone information statement issued by the Canadian Hurricane Centre of Environment Canada at 8:49 AM ADT Thursday 29 September 2011. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Tropical cyclone information statement for: =new= Newfoundland =new= Nova Scotia. For tropical storm Ophelia. This is the only planned statement at this time. Ophelia and frontal zone to potentially combine over Atlantic Canada this weekend. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==discussion== Tropical storm Ophelia is forecast to intensify into a hurricane and pass east of Bermuda late Saturday. A non-tropical low pressure system with an associated frontal zone to its east is forecast at the same time to move into the maritime provinces. As Ophelia moves northward, it is expected that the front will nearly stall somewhere over the maritime provinces potentially giving heavy rainfall. Depending on the intensity of Ophelia, strong winds could affect parts of Atlantic Canada late this weekend. As of Thursday morning, computer models predict various scenarios for Ophelia's track, ranging from Eastern Nova Scotia to well offshore over the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. The Canadian Hurricane Centre will be closely monitoring the tropical storm and frontal feature and may begin issuing regular 6-hourly forecasts on Friday.
