Kids Will Ham It Up, Radio Style:

In the event of hurricanes, fires, floods, earthquakes and other disasters,
you can count on amateur (or Ham) radio to provide vital links to agencies
and city services such as fire, police and ambulance. On Tuesday, March 20,
local kids can join Surrey Museum and Surrey Emergency Program Amateur
Radio Society (SEPAR) in an amateur radio emergency communications workshop
at the museum, at 17710 56A Ave. The session (from 2 to 4 p.m.) will focus
on how amateur radio provides communities with emergency communications
when commercial systems are not operational. The hands-on workshop is
designed for kids age nine and older. Admission is free, but space is
limited; preregister by calling 604-592-6956. Workshop participants will
talk to people in other countries, experience digital communications
without the internet, learn how radio waves travel, simulate a ground
control/International Space Station contact, try Morse code and watch
videos. Also, kids will learn that new technology is not always superior to
old technology and is anything but obsolete.

Father, Son Team Up in 'Outer Space':

Two Anderson Township amateur radio operators recently sent and received a
photo from a satellite that was manually deployed from the International
Space Station. Farrell Winder and his son, Jeff Winder, had helped in the
development of SuitSat-1 - a worn-out Russian spacesuit that was recycled,
outfitted with an amateur radio transmitter and batteries, and tossed from
the International Space Station in 2006. Amateur radio operators were able
to receive its signals on earth, but the batteries ran down in two weeks
and the space suit eventually burned up as it spiraled into earth's
atmosphere. The limited success of SuitSat-1, however, inspired the
development of a much newer advanced concept called ARISSat-1, which was
launched in August 2011 from the International Space Station.

Henryville, IN Tornado:

On Friday March 2nd an inbound cold front
brought extreme weather to the Ohio Valley
area. The Clark County RACES team conducted a
Skywarn net relaying weather reports to the
Louisville, KY National Weather Service
office. This front spawned several tornadoes
which took a track through the Northern part
of Clark and other nearby counties. After the
storms passed we started receiving reports of
massive destruction in the Henryville and
Marysville Indiana areas.
