Join the IRTS

If you are listening to this news bulletin and would like to join the
IRTS and become a member, you can download a free copy of ECHO Ireland
and a blank application form from the IRTS website. As the National
Radio Society for Ireland, IRTS represents the interests of Amateur
Radio, both nationally and internationally. Membership includes
licensed radio amateurs as well as shortwave listeners. We depend on
your continued membership and support.

Amateur Station Licence Examination

Many of the places for the upcoming Amateur Station Licence Examination
have already been applied for, so anyone wishing to sit the examination
should apply as soon as possible. The examination will be held on
Thursday 4 July at 2.00 p.m. in the ComReg offices in Dublin. The
examination may be held on that day at other centres where warranted by
the number of candidates. Full details, including entry procedure,
examination fee and how to pay the fee on line are available at
www.irts.ie/exam . There is also an exam button on the home page.
Places for the examination are limited and are being allocated on a
first come first served basis. Please note that it is necessary to
download the application form from the web page and forward the
completed form and the appropriate fee in order to secure a place for
the examination. If you pay the fee on line you must still complete and
forward the application form. The closing date for the receipt of
completed applications is Friday 14th June.

IRTS AGM Awards

Here are some of the award winners recently presented at the IRTS AGM
in Athlone. Michael Collins Memorial Trophy Exceptional service to the
Society or to Amateur Radio Winner: Dave Moore, EI4BZ. Arup Cup
Exceptional service to the Society or to Amateur Radio Winner: Pat
Whitty, EI8IQ. Sheila Piper Cup Service to the IRTS News Service
Winner: Joe Ryan, EI7GY. A full list of award winners is available on
the IRTS website.

EI13CLAN Challenge

The EI3CLAN Challenge is designed to promote club activity on the
bands. Whilst this is not a contest a full list of the rules and
regulations are available on the IRTS website. The award for the
winning club will be presented with an Icom 756PRO complete with
matching PSU and Desk mike which has been generously donated to the
Society.

IRTS CW Field Day

This year the IRTS CW Field Day will take place on Saturday and Sunday
June 1st/2nd. The deadline for the submission of logs is June 16th
2013.

Youngsters On The Air Estonia 2013

During the summer of 2013, a youth radio camp "Youngsters On The Air"
will be held near Tartu, Estonia from 5-12 August. There will be 10
teams participating from different European member associations of IARU
R1. The camp is organised by the Estonian Radio Amateurs Union. During
this week teams of young radio amateurs from 10 different European
countries will be participating in different activities: presentations,
Contests, visiting radio stations, observatory, etc. Young operators or
SWL's aged between 14-25, are being sought to represent Ireland. It has
been confirmed that the European Union Youth In Action Programme have
provided 70% funding towards participants flights and accommodation,

As two previous events in Romania and Belgium/Netherlands have shown,
it will be a great experience for the young hams which they will never
forget.

Radio Society of Great Britain

2013 marks the Centenary of the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB)
the 20,000 strong body that represents Britain's radio amateurs. The
RSGB is pleased to announce that its Patron, HRH The Prince Philip,
Duke of Edinburgh, KG, KT will be joining the Society for Centenary Day
at the National Radio Centre at Bletchley Park on 5 July 2013.

DX News

A group of Dutch amateurs have been going on an expedition to Malta for
the past 25 years. This year they have been issued with a special
callsign to celebrate the 25th anniversary. The callsign is 9H25Y and
will be heard on all bands 80 - 6m from 20 May until 4 June. QSL
Manager is PI4KGL.

Henning OZ1BII will be active again from Greenland as XP2I. He will be
there from 23-27 May and will take part in the CQWW CW Contest over the
weekend 25-26 May. QSLs go via the home call.

Dave W5CW makes a return visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands from 16
May until 11 June. As before he will operate as VP5/W5CW.

Jim G3VDB is reactivating his 8Q7EJ callsign from the Maldives from now
until 26 May. He will operate 'holiday style' mainly on 20m CW. QSL to
his home call.

radio news maybe telephoned to the radio news editor, Aidan, EI7JC on

Please note that items for the radio news should reach the editor no
later than midday on Thursday in order to be guaranteed inclusion in
the following Sunday's bulletin.
