ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) -- Albuquerque Public Schools students used the power of
science to bridge the distance between Earth and Space. On Friday, students
got a chance to chat with astronauts on the International Space Station. "I
jumped at the opportunity," said Student Francisco Lopez. "It was
exciting," said Student Marvin Gutierrez. It was a chance to connect with
astronauts up on the International Space Station. "Realistically this is a
once in a lifetime opportunity for Albuquerque Public Schools. There are
thousands and thousands of applications," said Aerospace Science Instructor
Larry Zentner. Applications from schools across the world. This year only
13 U.S. districts were picked. In turn, APS students from six different
schools gathered at Valley High to relay their best questions across the
miles by amateur radio, using an antenna.

Amateur radio, or "ham" radio operators in the region joined their fellow
licensees around the world in observing World Amateur Radio Day April 18,
marking the foundation of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) in
1925. As they do every year, radio amateurs around the world take to the
airwaves to celebrate amateur radio's contribution to society. Camarillo
resident James T. Fortney, whose FCC amateur radio call sign is K6IYK,
heads the American Radio Relay League's Santa Barbara Section that includes
Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. "While often unseen,
every day of the year, amateur radio operators are ready to provide
critical support for emergency responders in the event of a disaster or
larger emergency. In our region, the threats of earthquake, ires, floods
and other incidents may bring the need for our services and we're ready to
respond," Fortney said.
