/////////////////////////////////////////// Marilyn Gardner, W9LUO, Evanston Ham Radio Leader (SK): Posted: 25 Apr 2016 05:02 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36651 Funeral services for Marilyn Gardner, 73, founder and president of the Evanston Amateur Radio Community, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1334 Wesley Ave. Gardner, who was also choir director at the church, died last Tuesday. She was an active member of several ham radio groups in the area, including the North Shore Radio Club and the Metro Amateur Radio Club. She was one of the original founders of the Evanston group, whose mission is to assist the City of Evanston with emergency communications in the event of a local disaster, and her call letters, W9LUO, are readily recognized by hams throughout the Chicago area. /////////////////////////////////////////// Amateur Radio Society Revamps, Uses Radio in Unconventional Ways: Posted: 25 Apr 2016 05:02 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36650 The word radio is often associated with music and talk show chatter, but the Amateur Radio Society is exploring the lesser known side of radio -- its role in facilitating communication and winning wars. The club uses radio communications to facilitate an interest for students who would like to explore the hobby of the wavelengths of possibilities that come with amateur radio. President and electrical engineering junior Zach Burnham said amateur radio has anything to do with point to point communication. "I just want to extend the opportunities that I found to other students because I love working on projects, and I think that HAM radio is a really great way to find projects," Burnham said. However, a major keystone of the club isn't just exploring radio, it's extending a hand to the community. They help with two main events throughout the year, one in the fall and one in the spring. In the fall, they help with event communications emergency response support at the Cycle for Life, which benefits patients with cystic fibrosis. /////////////////////////////////////////// Where Mobile Network Can't Reach, Ham Radio Does the Trick: Posted: 25 Apr 2016 05:01 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/36649 Ham radio is the only mode of communication for polling and security personnel during the ongoing assembly polls in some remote corners of West Bengal which have been left untouched even by mobile phone towers. Armed with solar-powered batteries and ham radio handsets, a team of licensed ham radio operators were agents of last mile connectivity between North 24 Parganas district control room at Barasat and those on the field. "This is the first time that ham radio operators are being used in the election process to provide connectivity. We are very proud and are doing it free of cost as a service to the nation," Ambarish Nag Biswas of West Bengal Radio Club (amateur club), said. They have set up their equipments and infrastructure in 47 polling premises, each manned by a licensed amateur ham radio operator. |
