(WWLP) -- Long before smart phones and the internet and the digital revolution, there were Ham Radio operators and their still going strong after the first ham radio operation 83 years ago. The Hampden County Radio Association still feels relevant in spite of social media and other communication advances in recent years. All they've got is what some might consider primitive equipment being in constant communication with ham radio operators around the world. Jeffrey Bail is president of the Hampden County group. He pointed out there are times when ham radios really come in handy. He said, "For example, interruptions in communication like a power failure the ham radio operators are an excellent back up." /////////////////////////////////////////// Amateur Radio Operators Tune In to Weekend of Global Communication: Posted: 26 Jun 2016 05:53 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37057 "Whiskey Four Sugar. Whiskey Four Sugar," 13-year-old Mason Matrazzo called into his radio transmitter. After a couple of tries through static, a voice replied another set of call letters for an operator in Illinois. Matrazzo was among the members of the Forsyth Amateur Radio Club who spent Saturday and Sunday making radio contact with fellow radio fans across the country who participated in Amateur Radio Field Day. The amateur-radio operators, nicknamed hams, attempt to reach as many other operators as possible to earn points that increases their national ranking. Amateur radio has proven to be an effective form of communication when other systems, like cellphones and the internet, fail. "When all else fails, ham radio," Knight said. "During natural disasters like the tsunami in the Philippines or Hurricane Katrina, ham radio operators set up antennas and contacted people. They're the only things that worked when normal communication was down." /////////////////////////////////////////// Loud and Clear: Ham Radio Hobbyists Have a Field Day: Posted: 26 Jun 2016 05:50 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37056 RANBURNE -- For 24 hours this weekend, local ham radio operators set up at the Ranburne Fire Department to practice their emergency response and hone their radio skills in the annual National Field Day. The point of the exercise is part training, part social gathering and part competition, said Randy Smith, president of the Turkey Heaven Mountain Repeater Association. The members set up temporary antennas and brought their radios and attempt to make as many official contacts as possible during the 24 hours, beginning at 1 p.m. central time on Saturday and ending at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The test keeps the members' skills sharp so that in case of emergency they can respond quickly and efficiently, Smith said. "Like when Katrina hit New Orleans, all the information that was coming out of there for the first what was it, six hours, was all relayed via ham radio," said Jerry Wysoczynski, secretary/treasurer of the local association. "Cell phones didn't work; nothing worked. Land lines were down." /////////////////////////////////////////// Kay Craigie N3KN on Amateur Radio Roundtable, June 28: Posted: 26 Jun 2016 05:52 PM PDT http://www.eham.net/articles/37055 June 28th at 8:00 PMCT (0200 UTC Wed).
